Lurking Online: Kids face unique dangers through games and social media
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Roblox, Fortnite and Instagram are just some apps that are appealing to kids and may seem like harmless fun on the surface. These platforms are making news frequently due to teens creating relationships with predators online. The most notorious case was that of a 13-year-old Patricia Alatore who was kidnapped and murdered by a man she met online in 2020. However, the most recent case revolves around a Santa Ana man arrested in Bakersfield on suspicion of kidnapping a teen girl who he met online through the game Fortnite. According to investigators, they soon learned the Santa Ana man, 20-year-old Sergio Estrada, had been chatting with teen girl online for two years with intent to commit a sexual offense. Any child can be misled by a predator, so making sure you are having candid conversations with your child is important. Santa Ana man accused of kidnapping Bakersfield girl he met online
A Santa Ana man has been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping a 14-year-old Bakersfield girl he allegedly met online. The Kern County Sheriff's Office reported Thursday that Sergio Estrada, age 20, was found walking with the girl near an apartment complex in unincorporated east Bakersfield. She had gone missing at about 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 2400 block of Kentucky Street. The mother told deputies she was worried the girl was having an intimate relationship with a man she met on the computer game Fortnite, the release said. It said detectives later learned the girl had been communicating with Estrada for two years on social media. KCSO reported the girl was returned safely to her parents. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A Santa Ana man was arrested in Bakersfield on suspicion of kidnapping a teen girl who he met online while playing Fortnite, officials said. Sergio Estrada, 19, was arrested Wednesday in east Bakersfield after deputies say they found him walking with a girl who was reported missing. Man faces 500 years to life for sexually abusing child under 10 Sheriff's deputies initially responded to the 2400 block of Kentucky Street on June 11, for a report of a 14-year-old who was last seen the afternoon of June 10. The 14-year-old's mother told sheriff's deputies she believed her daughter was possibly in an intimate relationship with an 'older adult male' through the game 'Fortnite.' According to investigators, the teen and Estrada had been in contact with each other through social media for two years. Estrada was arrested and booked into the Lerdo Justice Facility for kidnapping, child stealing and contact with a minor with intent to commit a sexual offense, according to inmate records.
