Volodymyr Zelensky says Ukraine offering Russia talks next week
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says Ukraine has sent Russia an offer to hold another round of peace talks next week and that he wants to speed up negotiations for a ceasefire. Ukraine and Russia have held two rounds of talks in Istanbul over the past five months. They have agreed to swap prisoners but made no breakthroughs in ending almost three and a half years of conflict that started with Russia's 2022 invasion. Two people were killed in a Russian missile strike in the Synelnykove district, the military governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region Serhiy Lysak said. The Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions were also hit, according to Zelenskiy.

This is how things stand on Sunday, July 20: Fighting Russian forces launched a missile attack on Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, killing two people and damaging 'an outpatient clinic, a school and a cultural institution', according to the central region's governor, Serhiy Lysak. Another Russian missile attack on the Black Sea port of Odesa killed at least one person overnight and wounded six others, including six children, officials said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces launched 'more than 300 strike drones and over 30 missiles' against Ukrainian cities during the overnight attack. The attacks also damaged critical infrastructure in the Sumy region, 'leaving several thousand families without electricity', the Ukrainian president added. In Russia, the Mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, said early on Sunday that Russian air defences downed at least 15 Ukrainian drones heading for the capital. Russia's Ministry of Defence said early on Sunday that its air defence units destroyed 40 Ukrainian drones, including 21 over the Bryansk region, on the Ukrainian border. This came hours after the ministry said its air defence units shot down six missiles and 349 drones over Russian territory on Saturday. Earlier, Russia had to suspend trains for about four hours overnight in the southern Rostov region when it came under a Ukrainian drone attack, which injured one railway worker. The acting governor of the Rostov region, on Ukraine's eastern border, said Ukrainian drones had also caused fires and knocked down power lines. Politics and diplomacy Zelenskyy said Ukraine sent Russia a proposal offering a new round of peace talks to take place next week, after negotiations stalled last month. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accused Russia of deporting Ukrainians to Georgia and leaving them stranded there without proper documents, hundreds of miles from their home. He said Ukraine has brought back 43 people so far, but more people remain in 'difficult conditions' at the border. Earlier, Volunteers Tbilisi, an aid group, said at least 56 Ukrainians, mostly prisoners who completed their sentences and were subsequently ordered to leave Russia, were being held in 'inhumane' conditions in a basement near the Russian-Georgian border. India said it did not support 'unilateral sanctions' by the European Union, after Brussels imposed penalties on Russia that included a Rosneft oil refinery in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

Russian air defence systems shot down three drones en route to Moscow, city mayor Sergei Sobyanin says on his Telegram account. Two Moscow airports - Vnukovo and Domodedovo - suspended arrivals and departures for safety reasons but later resumed operations, Russian aviation watchdog Rosaviatsia said. The Russian Defence Ministry said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 27 Ukrainian drones in total from 3pm to 7pm Moscow time, including four over Moscow region, 15 over Bryansk region, six over Kaluga region and two over Tula region. Earlier on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russian forces had launched attacks involving more than 300 drones and about 30 missile and cruise missiles on Ukrainian cities overnight. Zelenskiy posted photos on Telegram showing damage caused to a residential block in Odessa on the Black Sea, where one person was killed and six others injured, according to local officials. At least four people were killed as Russia launched fresh aerial attacks on Ukraine between Thursday night and Friday morning, regional officials have said. In the central Dnipropetrovsk region, Governor Serhiy Lysak said that a 52-year-old man was killed and two more people were injured as Russian drones struck the city of Pavlohrad and surrounding villages overnight. Ukrainian Railways confirmed that the victim was a train driver who was killed when Russia struck an electric locomotive. A separate Russian strike on Friday morning then targeted the city of Kamianske, also in the Dnipropetrovsk region, killing a man and a woman, Lysak added. The strikes are the second deadly attack on the Dnipropetrovsk region over the past day, with a drone attack in the early hours of Thursday killing one person in the regional capital Dnipro and injuring 10 more across the region. In the neighbouring Zaporizhzhia region, Russia attacked the village of Stepnohirsk with guided bombs, sparking fires in several apartment blocks and killing a 64-year-old man, Zaporizhzhia Governor Ivan Fedorov said. A further four people were also injured in an overnight strike on the city of Chuhuiv in the northeastern Kharkiv region, Mayor Halyna Minayeva said. Ukraine's Air Force said Russia had launched 35 drones at the country overnight, primarily at 'frontline areas in the east', with air defences intercepting 11 of the drones over northern and eastern Ukraine and six more failing to reach their targets. Strikes were recorded by 18 drones at five locations, it added. Russia's Defence Ministry said it had downed 67 Ukrainian drones over eight regions of the country overnight, as well as 18 over annexed Crimea, the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. In the wake of the overnight attacks, Russian-installed authorities in Crimea announced a peninsula-wide ban on sharing footage of the aftermath of drone strikes online, citing the need 'to ensure public safety in the republic and protect military and other critical facilities'.
