Kate Middleton Makes Unexpected Nod to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Garden Party Appearance
Kate Middleton hosted a Buckingham Palace garden party on May 20—her first appearance at such an event in two years. The Princess of Wales's ensemble was loaded with symbolism and meaning, from tributes to the late Queen Elizabeth to her husband Prince William to—Prince Harry and Meghan Markle? Only Kate knows if it was a coincidence or not, but the future queen wore the same hat on Tuesday that she wore to Harry and Meghan's royal wedding in 2018, just one day after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary on May an unexpected sartorial decision, Kate Middleton not only paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth through her butter yellow Emilia Wickstead dress worn to yesterday's Buckingham Palace garden party and to Prince William through the earrings she chose—but the future queen also nodded to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in her ensemble. Let's break down the entire look: the Princess of Wales's dress on May 20 was not only an homage to the late Queen's affinity for wearing bright colors (it made her easier to spot in a crowd, she explained), but Kate had also previously worn it to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June 2022, specifically to a Service of Thanksgiving celebrating her historic 70 years on the throne. Kate accessorized Tuesday with the same pair of Robinson Pelham earrings worn to her wedding to William on April 29, 2011. But that wasn't the only wedding callback Kate wore yesterday—her Philip Treacy hat was also worn to a well-known and widely covered royal wedding in recent memory: that of the Duke and Duchess of Susssex, who coincidentally had just celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary the day prior, on May 19. Whether this was an intentional fashion nod—saying something without saying a word—or a true coincidence, there's no way that someone on Kate's team (or even Kate herself) wasn't aware of the decision. Kate has only worn the hat a couple of times—to Harry and Meghan's wedding, then to Trooping the Colour in 2019, and now to the garden party. The saucer-style headpiece is pale yellow and features a collection of round flowers complemented by a rosette, according to The Daily Express, which called it 'distinctive and eye-catching and a timeless, sophisticated choice for special occasions.' While once fiercely close with brother-in-law Harry—Harry even said in the past that he considered Kate the sister he never had—thanks to Harry's strained relationship with William, Kate's relationship with Harry has cooled, as well. Kate appeared on the surface to have a friendly relationship with Meghan in the early years of Harry and Meghan's courtship, but in his 2023 book Endgame, royal biographer Omid Scobie wrote that when she became a member of the royal family, Meghan hoped Kate 'would be someone she could at least turn to for an encouraging word during her lowest points. They were once both outsiders, middle-class women brought into the House of Windsor for unimaginably different lives. Kate, however, was uninterested in forming this kind of bond with Meghan.' Yet, as a source previously told Us Weekly, Kate and Meghan 'are two women under serious amounts of pressure, stress, and under a huge spotlight that no one can relate to—they will always have a bond that no one can break.' In her 2021 interview alongside Harry with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan called Kate 'a good person,' adding, 'I think so much of what I have seen play out is this idea of polarity, where if you love me, you don't have to hate her. And if you love her, you don't need to hate me.' Of Kate's relationship with Harry today, Scobie wrote that Kate 'was closest to Harry, and she will always look back fondly on those moments…and the relationship he had with their children…but to her, there is no way she could ever trust them after all their interviews.' In addition to that, Harry and Meghan's decision to step back as working royals in 2020 and relocate to the U.S. also put more strain on William and Kate to 'fill the working void left behind,' Scobie added. Harry himself said that his family 'won't speak to me' in an emotional BBC interview earlier this month, one where he also sought reconciliation. Yesterday's garden party saw the Prince and Princess of Wales mingle with 7,500 guests from a number of their patronages, military affiliations, and projects close to their hearts, including Homewards, Action for Children, and Ty Hafan, according to The Mirror. The couple also chatted with the family of Liz Hatton, a 17-year-old photographer who photographed William at an investiture and met with Kate at Windsor Castle last October before her far-too-soon death in December. Other attendees at the garden party included Holocaust survivor Steven Frank and 10-year-old Tony Hudgell, who missed a garden party last year because he got stuck in traffic, prompting another invitation this year. All's well that ends well, as yesterday was Kate's first garden party since 2023, so Hudgell might have missed 2024's party, but he got the chance to meet the Princess of Wales in exchange. Kate Middleton Joins Prince William for Palace Garden Party for the First Time Since 2023
Kate Middleton made a surprise appearance at a Buckingham Palace garden party on May 20 alongside husband Prince William and a number of other royals. It is the Princess of Wales's first garden party since 2023, after stepping away from the season last year as she underwent cancer treatment. The future queen wore a familiar outfit in a trendy color—butter yellow Emilia Wickstead previously worn to Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee in her first Buckingham Palace garden party in two years, Kate Middleton returned to an outfit worn for a special occasion in 2022 that happens to be in a very trendy color—butter yellow. The Princess of Wales joined her husband Prince William and other members of the royal family for the garden party on May 20, with Kate turning up in a surprise appearance. For the occasion Tuesday, William and Kate invited cousins Princess Eugenie and Zara Tindall to join them for the soiree—the third such one of the season. According to Hello!, the Prince and Princess of Wales personally invited their relatives to help them host; other special guests were there as well, including the family of Liz Hatton, a budding photographer who died of cancer last December at just 17 years old, only two months after meeting fellow photographer Kate (along with William) at Windsor Castle. William and Kate were also joined at the garden party by Prince Edward and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. Kate wore a sunny yellow Emilia Wickstead dress and matching Philip Treacy hat for her first garden party since 2023—and if the ensemble looks familiar, it's for good reason. The future queen wore the same look to a June 2022 Service of Thanksgiving honoring Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee and her historic 70 years on the throne. William and Kate's appearance Tuesday comes two days ahead of their second trip to Scotland inside of a month, when they head out to Glasgow for a visit on May 22. They were last in Scotland on April 29 and April 30, where they visited the Scottish Isles on their 14th wedding anniversary. Garden parties have been held at Buckingham Palace as far back as the 1860s, when Queen Victoria began what were known as 'breakfasts'—even though 'they took place in the afternoon,' Hello! reported. According to the outlet, around 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches, and 20,000 slices of cake are consumed at each party. Read the original article on InStyle

Royal News Roundup: Kate Middleton's New Hair, Meghan Markle's Striking Pic of Archie & More
The royal family marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day and paid tribute to all those who served during the Second World War. The palace released a striking photo of King Charles saluting from behind during the military procession. The king was joined by Prince William and his family. The Prince of Wales's body language was in sync with his eldest son, Prince George, as they stood on the Buckingham Palace balcony to watch the flypast. Body language expert Darren Stanton observed Prince William and his wife, Princess Catherine, during the commemoration, noting that their marriage is "stronger than ever." The palace unveiled new, painted portraits of King Charles and Queen Camilla at the National Gallery's Central Hall, and they had a modern, abstract flair. Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were noticeably absent from the Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey, understandably due to school. Speaking of the Thanksgiving Service, Kate Middleton wore the iconic Collingwood pearl drop earrings—a family heirloom previously worn by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Middleton also debuted a stunning new hairstyle while attending a concert at Horse Guards Parade, striking the perfect balance between elegance and glamour. Meghan Markle paid tribute to Archie with a heartwarming birthday post on Instagram, featuring a striking image of the 6-year-old looking at the sun. After news got out about Prince Harry losing his appeal for publicly funded security, Markle responded with a tribute to her husband on Instagram, sharing a captionless black-and-white pic of the proud dad with Archie and Lilibet. The Duke of Sussex made his first public appearance since losing his appeal and giving his tell-all interview with BBC. He stepped out to support the Diana Award in memory of his late mother. Princess Anne delivered a message on behalf of King Charles while visiting Guernsey to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Bailiwick. For the occasion, she donned a beige coat dress and a meaningful brooch. Prince Edward hosted a special event at Buckingham Palace for winners of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Several highlights were shared on the royal family's social media. Duchess Sarah Ferguson launched the official website of the Youth Impact Council as their co-founder and global ambassador. Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie did a candid podcast interview with Lessons from Our Mothers, opening up about their childhoods and the positive influence of their mother, Fergie. Princess Eugenie marked her husband Jack Brooksbank's birthday with a heartwarming tribute on Instagram, referring to him as "my hero." Want all the latest royal family news sent right to your inbox? 'Profoundly moved': Sir Winston Churchill's grandson joins Liberation 80 celebrations in Jersey
The grandson of Sir Winston Churchill has praised Channel Islanders after observing Jersey's 80th Liberation Day celebrations. Sir Nicholas Soames attended the island's Service of Thanksgiving, where residents commemorate the day Jersey was liberated from German Occupation on 9 May 1945. Islanders re-enacted the moment when British soldiers walked into the town of St Helier and raised the Union flag on the Pomme d'Or Hotel balcony 80 years ago. Sir Nicholas explains: "There's nothing Disney-fied about it. It is as it happened and people are still incredibly mindful of it and grateful. "I don't think anyone needs to tell the people of Jersey to remember their history. I think they do it very well for themselves." Thousands of Jersey residents watched the re-enactment, which was followed by a march past of uniformed personnel and a motorcade of vintage vehicles. Sir Nicholas adds: "I really was deeply impressed by it and I feel the community's spirit here. There's nowhere you can go where people are so loyal, singing the National Anthem with cheers all around the Square. "To see a crew from the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and the equivalent German Naval Cadets marching together is unbelievable. "Nobody is going to forget what happened. It was very bad and there were some terrible goings on, but at the end of the day, it's all over, thank God." In Churchill's address to the British Isles on VE Day, the Prime Minister announced that "our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today". Reflecting on that period, Sir Nicholas says: "There was constant worry throughout the war as to what was to be done; how the Channel Islands were and whether it was worth trying to retake them, but I think Jersey comes out of it triumphantly, personally. "He would have loved Liberation because he loved celebration - he would have loved it because he greatly believed that if you don't know the lessons of history, you're bound to get them wrong again. "It's been a wonderful experience - I'm very honoured to have been invited to come and I've been profoundly moved."

Queen Elizabeth's Memories of VE Day Resurfaced for 80th Anniversary — Including Leaving the Palace Incognito
Queen Elizabeth's remarks about VE Day have resurfaced on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe The then-Princess Elizabeth was 19 at the time, and she and sister Princess Margaret went incognito to celebration in the streets of London The history-making monarch said she was "terrified" of being recognized remembered it as "one of the most memorable nights of my life"Queen Elizabeth had a historic life, but she once called the end of World War II in Europe "one of the most memorable nights of my life." As the British royal family gathered in London to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, their social media pages resurfaced the late Queen Elizabeth's recollections of the historic day. The then-princess was 19 when the war ended, and she reflected on celebrating on May 8, 1945, in a BBC recording from 1985. After waving to the crowds gathered in front of the balcony at Buckingham Palace 'every hour' with their father King George VI and their mother Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth and her sister, Princess Margaret, went incognito to mix in with the crowds and experience first-hand the joy of those celebrating throughout London. "Terrified" of being recognized, the royal recalled how she pulled her uniform cap down over her eyes — until a Grenadier Guards officer who was escorting her said he "refused to be seen in the company of another officer improperly dressed." Elizabeth recalled, "We cheered the King and Queen on the balcony and then walked miles through the street. I remember lines of unknown people linking arms and walking down Whitehall, all of us just swept along on a tide of happiness and relief." The celebrations were "one of the most memorable nights of my life," she said. No photos from the outing are known to exist, but the future Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret's night out was reenacted in the sixth and final season of The Crown as flashback sequences. Actresses Viola Prettejohn and Beau Gadsdon portrayed the royal the 75th anniversary of VE Day in 2020, Queen Elizabeth gave a speech to lead the nation in remembrance. "At the start, the outlook seemed bleak, the end distant, the outcome uncertain. But we kept faith that the cause was right — and this belief, as my father noted in his broadcast, carried us through," the monarch said. "Never give up, never despair — that was the message of VE Day." King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Kate Middleton and other members of the royal family marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday at a Service of Thanksgiving held at Westminster Abbey. The service began moments after 12 p.m. local time with two minutes of silent reflection to remember the sacrifices and heroism of the armed forces and the stoicism of ordinary people during World War II. The royals laid wreaths and flowers as well as met with some veterans in attendance at the event. Read the original article on People
