Netflix expands into kids gaming with Peppa Pig and Sesame Street

Netflix is ramping up its efforts in the kids gaming space by integrating beloved IPs like Peppa Pig and Sesame Street into its platform. The company began streaming new Peppa Pig episodes in the U.S. today and has launched the World of Peppa Pig gaming app directly within Netflix. This move strengthens Netflix's commitment to offering familiar and safe content for young audiences. Lisa Burgess, Netflix's head of kids gaming, emphasized the importance of using well-known intellectual property to build trust and engagement among young users. 'Kids want to interact with characters they know and love — they see them as best friends,' she told Variety. The World of Peppa Pig app includes interactive activities such as puzzles, dress-up games, coloring books, and memory challenges. Designed for ages two to eight, its core audience is preschoolers aged two to five. Netflix also announced it has acquired streaming rights to PBS Kids' Sesame Street, including Sesame Street Mecha Builders, and will be developing original games around these franchises. The strategy ties into Netflix's broader goal of maintaining viewer engagement from early childhood through adulthood. Burgess says the company uses profile data to tailor content recommendations, which now extends to gaming. 'We want to create a smooth content journey for families — from kids games to all-ages titles,' she said. With kids and family viewing accounting for 15% of its total viewership, Netflix is positioning its gaming lineup as an extension of the trusted environment families already rely on — aiming to grow its presence in the competitive kids entertainment market.

Netflix to stream 'Sesame Street' episodes beginning later this year

"Sesame Street" has a new streaming home. Netflix will stream the next three seasons of "Sesame Street," as well as a library of past episodes, securing the future of the longtime children's program known for characters like Elmo and Cookie Monster. The deal with Netflix was announced Monday alongside another agreement with PBS, the longtime traditional TV home of "Sesame Street." Netflix will have the exclusive global premiere streaming rights to new episodes of seasons 56 through 58, according to a Netflix spokesperson. New episodes will also be available on free, publicly funded PBS TV stations in the U.S., and on PBS Kids' digital platforms, including its YouTube channel. Under the terms of the deal, Netflix will also gain rights to 90 hours of past episodes, and will be able to develop video games for both "Sesame Street" and its spin-off series "Sesame Street Mecha Builders." The deal comes after Warner Bros. Discovery opted not to renew its five-year streaming agreement in December with "Sesame Street" on its platform Max — now, again, called HBO Max — prompting a search for the iconic kids show's next distribution partner. Under the previous deal, episodes debuted on PBS months after they were released on WBD's streaming service, which also has an extensive library of past seasons. WBD has been cutting back on children's content as Netflix builds out its portfolio of the programming. Earlier this year, episodes of YouTube children's content creator "Ms. Rachel" were added to Netflix. Kid and family programming represents 15% of Netflix's total viewing, the company said in Monday's release. WBD reportedly paid $30 million to $35 million per year for new episodes of "Sesame Street." Terms of the deal with Netflix weren't disclosed. Monday's announcement puts the future of "Sesame Street" on steadier ground after it has reportedly been in the midst of a financial crisis, while also faced with pressure from the government. President Donald Trump signed an executive order earlier this month to end public funding of PBS and National Public Radio, claiming that the organizations are "biased and partisan." "Public media is essential," said Sara DeWitt, PBS KIDS senior vice president and general manager, "and we know from years of research that providing new, high-quality content to children across the country for free helps prepare them for success in school and life." "This unique public-private partnership ensures children in communities across the U.S. continue to have free access on PBS KIDS to the Sesame Street they love," said Sesame Workshop CEO Sherrie Westin in a press release. The new season will be "reimagined" to include new segments and format changes, according to the release. The episodes will feature one 11-minute story, to "tell stories with even more character-driven humor and heart." Season 56 will be released in three batches starting later this year.

'Sesame Street' is saved with new Netflix streaming deal (but you can still watch on PBS)

If you'd told me 20 years ago that the company sending DVDs in the mail would one day save the most beloved PBS shows in history, I'd have thought you were crazy. On Monday, Netflix announced a deal with Sesame Workshop, giving the streamer exclusive worldwide premiere rights. After Warner Bros. Discovery opted not to renew its "Sesame Street" streaming deal at the end of last year, the show's future remained uncertain. But now Elmo, Big Bird, and the rest of the gang are relocating to Netflix. "Sesame Street," a hallmark of children's TV for over half a century, will make its debut on the streamer later this year with an "all-new, reimagined" 56th season, along with 90 hours of previous episodes. New "Sesame Street" episodes will continue to be available on the same day on PBS and PBS Kids app in the U.S., according to the deal. Netflix also gains rights to develop video games for both 'Sesame Street' and 'Sesame Street Mecha Builders.' N IS FOR NETFLIX! Sesame Street is joining the Netflix family! Brand new episodes — as well as past seasons — will premiere later this year. 19, 2025 "This unique public-private partnership will enable us to bring our research-based curriculum to young children around the world with Netflix's global reach, while ensuring children in communities across the U.S. continue to have free access on public television to the Sesame Street they love," Sesame Workshop CEO Sherri Westin said in a statement. The next season is shaking things up with some "fresh format changes," ditching each episode's magazine-style set-up for a single 11-minute story to allow for "even more character-driven humor and heart." In addition to format changes, season 56 will see the return of fan-favorite segments like Elmo's World and Cookie Monster's Foodie Truck. The new run of episodes will land on the streamer in three batches. While we'd floated other potential streaming homes for "Sesame Street" like Apple Plus, Netflix makes a lot of sense. Family programming makes up 15% of Netflix's total viewing, with popular titles like "Gabby's Dollhouse," "Family Switch," and "The Monkey King" drawing in tens of millions of viewers. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. With competitors like Max shifting focus away from programming aimed at younger audiences, Netflix has an opportunity to secure its foothold. Now that it's got "Sesame Street" under its belt, it's primed to challenge Disney Plus as the de facto home for kids' content. Given "Sesame Street's" public television roots, there's bound to be some complaints about the show arriving on a paid streaming service, just as there was when "Sesame Street" went behind HBO's paywall. But making episodes available day-and-date on PBS platforms seems like a welcome compromise.
