Louth's Darren Geoghegan in the running as Annaverna plays host to All-Ireland Poc Fada Finals

Competitors taking part this year are of the highest calibre, with many holding All-Star Awards, All Ireland Club and County medals. The modern Poc Fada recreates the legendary journey of Cú Chulainn who as the seven-year-old boy Setanta decided he had waited long enough to become a member of the famous Red Branch Knights of Ulster. So he set off from his home in Dundalk for the Macra, the Red Branch Knights school in Armagh, some 60km away. While crossing the Cooley Mountains, Setanta hit his sliotar far ahead and ran forward to catch it on his hurley stick before it hit the ground. Today's contenders compete over the same Cooley mountains as Setanta once passed. The 5km Senior Hurling and 2.5 km Senior Camogie and U16 courses provide ample opportunity to practice pocs, as on average the Senior Hurling takes 46 pocs to win. The modern All-Ireland Poc Fada dates back to 1960 when six boys from Dundalk (Mal Begley, Peter Crilly, Sean Mc Aeney, Jerome Mc Donagh, Peter Myles and the first-ever winner Damien Callan) under the watchful eye of An tAthair Pól Mac Shean, took part in the very first Poc Fada. The first All-Ireland Poc Fada took place the following year in 1961. First sponsored by Martin Donnelly more than 25 years ago, the MD Sports All-Ireland Poc Fada Finals represent one of the longest-running sponsorships within the GAA and Camogie Association. Spectators are very welcome to come along to Annaverna Mountain on Monday for 11am. PLAYING ORDER Senior Hurling 1. Cathal Dillon, Tipperary 2. Pearce Smyth, Down 3. Noel Fallon, Roscommon 4. Padraig Harrington announces tragic passing of beloved family dog

Padraig Harrington has announced the tragic passing of his beloved family dog, Setanta. Padraig and his family brought Setanta home following the passing of their beloved dog, Wilson, to keep their other Bernese Rio company. Sharing adorable photos of Setanta to share the heartbreaking news, including of Setanta in an Ireland rugby jersey, Padraig wrote that the beloved pup had an adverse reaction to anaesthesia. 'A sad day for my family,' Padraig wrote. 'Tragically we lost Setanta to an adverse reaction to an anaesthetic.' People were heartbroken for Padraig and his family, with one commenting 'So sorry to hear this Padraig. We had a similar experience with our Bernese a few years ago. The grief of losing a treasured family pet is real, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.' 'Agh no.. so sorry guys, what a beautiful dog and family member,' another wrote. 'We will all miss him here on socials. RIP Setanta.' Padraig Harrington's dog Setanta at the Prom-Am prior to the Horizon Irish Open at The K Club in 2023. Bryson DeChambeau, who finished the tournament in fifth place, previously spoke about how Rory didn't speak to him at all on the final day of the tournament — with Padraig criticising Bryson's 'bizarre change' during the third hole of the tournament, sliding out of the tournament in horrendous fashion. 'What was he thinking on the third hole? Bryson has made his game by being a long hitter,' Padraig said at the time. 'He stands up on the third hole with a one-shot lead, possibly can drive the green, he lays up makes bogey; Rory drives it, hits driver up to the near the edge of the green and makes his birdie.' Pic:'It was the most bizarre change of personality I've ever seen in the game of golf right there in that moment…it was beyond bizarre what he did off the tee, for him in his personality. He didn't hit a shot afterwards. 'He has different skills but his ego has gone down this road of being a long hitter and he had a chance right there on the third hole, stand up there, burst one down there, it's a big enough area and he just gave all the momentum back to Rory.'

Padraig Harrington heartbroken after death of dog due to 'adverse reaction'

Padraig Harrington has taken to social media to share the devastating news of the death of his beloved dog Setanta. In separate X and Instagram posts, legendary golfer Harrington revealed that two-year-old Setanta had passed away after suffering an 'adverse reaction to an anaesthetic.' "A sad day for my family, tragically we lost Setanta to an adverse reaction to an anaesthetic," reads Harrington's posts. Setanta was a firm fan favourite for social media followers of Harrington who adored the golfer's snaps of the Bernese Mountain dog. This is the second pet of the Harrington family to pass away in recent times following dog Wilson's death in 2024. After Wilson's passing, the family adopted another Bernese Mountain, Rio, to keep Setanta company in the absence of his great pal. In a golfing context, Harrington last made headlines a few weeks ago when he blasted Bryson DeChambeau following Rory McIlroy's Masters win. DeChambeau had complained that McIlroy didn't engage with him on the course during their final round, noting that the eventual winner didn't speak to him all day. Harrington criticised DeChambeau for his comments and actions during and after that final round which saw him slip out of contention after a bright start. "I just have to go and say something about strategy and Bryson. What was he thinking on the third hole? "Bryson has made his game by being a long hitter. He stands up on the third hole with a one-shot lead, possibly could drive the green. "He lays up, makes bogey. Rory hits driver up to near the edge of green and makes birdie. It was the most bizarre change of personality I've ever seen in the game of golf, right there in that moment. And Bryson makes some incredible changes of personality. "It was beyond bizarre what he did off the tee for him in his personality and he didn't hit a shot afterwards." "He's different skills, but his ego has gone down this road of being a long hitter and he had a chance right there on the third hole. Stand up there, burst one down there. It's a big enough area. "He just gave all the momentum back to Rory. It was just a change of attitude by him. And not being yourself can be a very dangerous thing in golf. "I think the other thing that I'm seeing as well, Bryson seems to be a little bit upset that Rory didn't talk to him on the golf course, which is bizarre because plenty of times you're playing partner wouldn't say a word to you. "It's not an unusual thing to expect your playing partner to help you out by talking to you. I don't know where Bryson was. He wasn't the person he was last year."
