Jeremy Allen White of "The Bear" has won the lead acting award two consecutive years, with that series winning best comedy in 2023. Both Smart and White received nominations again this year. Record-setting performance for freshman comedy series The 23 Emmy nominations for "The Studio" represent the most ever for a freshman comedy series, surpassing the previous record of 20 set by "Ted Lasso" in 2021. The recognition contributes to a banner year for Apple TV+, which debuted in 2019. The streaming service also claimed the most-nominated series this year with Season 2 of "Severance," which earned 27 nominations and is favored to win best drama. Overall, Apple TV+ received 81 nominations, exceeding its previous high of 72 set last year. The show secured half the guest actor nominations, with Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Zoë Kravitz, Anthony Mackie and Martin Scorsese recognized for their appearances. The series featured numerous celebrity cameos, with many actors and directors playing themselves. Competition and future production Season 1 of "The Studio" competes against Season 4 of "Hacks," which made a strong showing critically but saw its Rotten Tomatoes audience score drop significantly compared with Seasons 1-3. "The Bear," whose fourth season debuted last month, competes this year based on its third season, which critics greeted with a more muted response than the first two. Severance, The Last of Us and Andor just nabbed dozens of Emmy nominations
The nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards just dropped and, unsurprisingly, Apple TV+'s Severance led the pack with a whopping 27, including Best Drama. The streamer has another bona-fide hit with the Seth Rogen-led The Studio , which captured 23 nominations. However, HBO Max received the most kudos by platform, with 142 nominations in total. This is thanks to the second season of The Last of Us , with 16 nominations, and the Batman-adjacent The Penguin . The White Lotus, The Pitt and Hacks also grabbed multiple nominations. This is the highest number of noms the outlet has ever received. Netflix still holds the record, though, with 160 nominations in 2020. Andor scored 14 nominations, including one for Best Drama. Star Wars shows aren't typically singled out for the high-profile awards, though the first season of Andor was also up for Best Drama, before losing to Succession . No actors from the series were nominated, which is a bummer given the performances by Diego Luna, Denise Gough, Elizabeth Dulau and Stellan Skarsgård, among others. There was a day when sci-fi programs only received nominations for stuff involving costumes or sets.
