State honour shines light on clean energy champion

THE dedication of Datuk Davis Chong Chun Shiong (pic) in driving clean energy initiatives and nurturing young talent has earned him one of Penang's highest state honours. The 45-year-old executive director and group chief executive officer of Solarvest Holdings Bhd was conferred the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN), which carries the title 'Datuk', in recognition of his contributions to renewable energy and community development. Chong, who also serves as deputy chairman of 88 Captains, a charitable organisation supporting talented and underprivileged students in the northern region, has been a key figure in the country's clean energy landscape since founding Solarvest in 2014. At the time the company was established, he said solar energy was barely known locally. He credited the state recognition to his team and everyone who had stood behind him throughout his journey. 'This recognition for contributing to Penang is not just personal, but also for those who have supported me along the way,' said Chong. 'We have left a big footprint by starting and growing in Penang and from here, we have expanded globally,' he said. 'Our aim is to first meet Malaysia's clean energy demands among industries and consumers, then to scale regionally,' he added. Chong said the award marked a major milestone not just for himself, but also his company, partners and everyone involved in the journey of transforming the energy landscape. 'To spearhead the energy transition in Penang, we will soon begin building the largest solar farm in the state, set for completion by the end of next year,' he said. Over the years, Chong has been actively advocating for solar energy adoption, working closely with the public and policymakers to foster a more supportive environment for renewable energy. 'The current demand has grown to a point where my company is now doing more than just providing solar solutions,' he said. 'We are transforming into a clean energy expert, offering a comprehensive suite of renewable energy services tailored for homeowners, businesses and industries,' he said. Chong was accompanied by his wife Caroline Teoh, 45, and other close family members during the ceremony held in conjunction with the 84th birthday celebration of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib at Dewan Sri Pinang in George Town. This year, a total of 1,530 individuals received state awards, medals and honours.
