Nearly 9 million carp fingerlings stocked in Haditha Dam

Shaafq News/ On Monday, Iraq's Agriculture Ministry released nearly 9 million carp fingerlings into Lake and Haditha Dam in Anbar, aiming to boost local fish stocks and support aquatic ecosystems. '8.7 million common carp fingerlings and 5,400 fingerlings of various native Iraqi fish species were released in the reservoir,' a statement by the Ministry explained. Ammar Ali Mahmoud, head of the release committee, said the carp fingerlings were bred at the Al-Suwaira hatchery under the Animal Resources Directorate, adding that the initiative aims to replenish fish stocks across Iraq's water bodies and preserve the nation's aquatic resources. Despite declining water levels, the upper Euphrates region continues to offer favorable conditions for fish farming, according to ministry officials.

Kurdistan Interior backs PKK disbandment, urges disarmament roadmap

Shaafq News/ Kurdistan's Interior Minister, Reber Ahmed, on Monday welcomed the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) decision to disband and hand over its weapons. In an interview with Shafaq News, Ahmed noted that the details of the disarmament process, including the designated authority to receive the weapons, have not yet been determined. 'The Presidency of the Kurdistan Region and the Kurdish people are pleased with the PKK's decision to hand over its weapons and end the fighting with the Turkish army along the border areas,' he said. Ahmed explained that the development of many border villages is now possible, after the extensive damage caused by the conflict between the PKK and the Turkish military, emphasizing that this is the primary reason for the positive reaction. Addressing relations between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government in Baghdad, Ahmed clarified that the Regional Government is only bound by certain constitutional provisions and remains committed to agreements with the central government. 'Some decisions made in Baghdad are intended to exert political pressure on the region and are not binding for the Kurdistan Regional Government,' he said. 'However, we are working to resolve any crisis with Baghdad and to establish clear and explicit agreements.'

Massive fire rages at Iranian waste facility

2025-05-03T21:22:47+00:00 Shaafq News/ A large fire broke out on Saturday at a cardboard waste collection and compression facility in Nazarabad, west of Karaj, Iranian media reported. The blaze, fueled by strong winds, spread rapidly and engulfed 12 industrial units in the area. According to local authorities, at least 10 firefighting teams are currently battling the flames. Initial reports ruled out any connection between the fire and a nearby power station, contradicting earlier speculation on social media that an explosion may have triggered the incident. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and no casualties have been reported so far. On April 26, a massive explosion struck Iran's Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, killing at least 40 people and injuring over 1,000 others.
