"India used vaseline?" – Ex-Pakistan cricketer Shabbir Ahmed makes explosive ball-tampering claim after Oval Test thriller

Former Pakistan pacer Shabbir Ahmed stirred controversy with serious allegations against Team India after their thrilling win over England in the fifth Test at The Oval. England seemed on course to chase down 374 when Joe Root and Harry Brook were in control, having taken the score to 301/3. But a dramatic turnaround led by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna saw India dismiss England for 367, sealing a nail-biting six-run victory. The pitch at The Oval was widely considered the most balanced surface of the series, offering a fair contest between bat and ball. Even on Day 5, the old ball continued to swing significantly, making batting a tough challenge. Though India had the opportunity to opt for a new ball after the 80th over, they chose to stick with the old one due to its movement—and the decision proved crucial. Live Events While they did suffer two defeats, India arguably played the better cricket in those matches but couldn't seize crucial moments, which led to their losses. Ultimately, the team returned home with a drawn series (2-2), having shown depth, resilience, and promise. A major highlight was how every player who featured in the series managed to justify their selection.

Ex-Pakistan cricketer takes dig at Shubman Gill's men after Oval Test, says ‘India Used Vaseline, send this ball to lab'

India's six-run win in the fifth Test against England at The Oval didn't go well with former Pakistan cricketer Shabbir Ahmed who claimed Shubman Gill's men used 'vaseline' and want the red cherry to be lab tested. Shabbir's comment came in after India pacer defended 35 runs on the final day of the Test match to script an epic comeback win. The win not only won India the game, but also secured the visitor's a 2-2 draw in the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Chasing 374 runs to win, England were on course for a series-clinching win, but crumbled under pressure after the dismissals of Joe Root and Harry Brook. The performance didn't go well with Shabbir, who took to X to express his views, explaining that the petroleum jelly helped the ball to move even after 80-plus overs. In fact, despite the availability, India didn't opt for the second new ball on the final day. 'I think India used Vaseline. After 80 + over Ball still shine like new. Umpire should send this ball to lab for examine," Shabbir wrote on X. Mohammed Siraj's three wickets on the final day took him to 23 wickets in the series - highest wicket-taker in five matches. For the unknown, Shabbir played for Pakistan from 1999 and 2007 in 10 Tests, 32 ODIs and one T20I and took 84 wickets. This is not the first time former Pakistan cricketers have slammed the Indian team's performance with weird claims. Earlier, during India's T20 World Cup 2024 campaign when former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq accused the Indians of ball tampering. "Arshdeep Singh, when he was bowling the 15th over, the ball was reversing. Is it too early (for reverse swing) with the new ball? This means the ball was ready for reverse swing by the 12th or the 13th over. Umpires should keep their eyes open (to spot) these it was Pakistani bowlers (reverse swinging the ball) this would have been a big issue. We know reverse swing very well and if Arshdeep can come in the 15th over and start reversing the ball, it means some serious work had been done before," Inzamam had said to a Pakistani news channel.

'India Used Vaseline': Ex-Pakistan Cricketer Makes Explosive Claim, Wants Ball To Be Lab Tested

Last Updated: A former Pakistan pacer claims that the ball used by India appeared new even after 80-plus overs and wants it to be tested. India's epic comeback win over England in the recently concluded Oval Test has been put into question by a former Pakistan fast bowler who wants the Dukes ball used by the team to be laboratory tested for being tampered with. India fast bowlers led a terrific comeback as England suffered a batting collapse in chase of 374 in the series-deciding fifth and final Test that concluded earlier this week on Monday. However, the performance hasn't gone down well with former Pakistan fast bowler Shabbir Ahmed who claims that the Indian team applied Vaseline, insinuating that the reason why their fast bowlers made the ball to talk was because of the petroleum jelly that kept the red cherry new even 'after 80+ over". I thinkIndia used VaselineAfter 80 + overBall still shine like newUmpire should send this ball to lab for examine— Shabbir Ahmed Khan (@ShabbirTestCric) August 4, 2025 Siraj took a five-wicket haul as England were bowled out for 367 on the final morning of the Test as the series ended in a 2-2 draw. Who is Shabbir Ahmed? Shabbir is a former right-arm pacer who played 10 Tests, 32 ODIs and one T20I for Pakistan between 1999 and 2007. He took a combined 84 wickets during his international career. The tall pacer's career suffered a major setback when he was suspended for one year on account of a suspect bowling action. He was the first bowler to be banned at the international level for 12 months after University of Western Australia concluded that his bowling action is illegal. The ban was lifted in December 2006. Shabbir later signed up for the now defunct Indian Cricket League where he represented Chennai Superstars. He took a hat-trick in the final of the inaugural ICL to help Chennai become the champions. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
