Shad Canada Marks 45 Years of Impact With New Report: A Blueprint for Canada's Innovation Economy

WATERLOO, Ontario, June 04, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In celebration of Innovation Week, Shad Canada is proud to release its 45 Years of Impact report, a milestone reflection on the national program's legacy of empowering the next generation of Canadian innovators. Since 1980, Shad has transformed the lives of over 24,000 high school students through immersive, hands-on STEAM and entrepreneurship programs delivered across 30 post-secondary campuses and online. The report launch comes at a pivotal time. This week's OECD Economic Survey issued a stark warning: Canada's productivity is faltering, with GDP growth projected to slow to just 1% in 2025, and long-standing issues like weak investment, internal trade barriers, and labour market frictions must be addressed urgently. As the OECD notes, future prosperity hinges on policies that boost innovation and workforce readiness—exactly the kind of skills Shad is cultivating in the next generation. In a moment of economic uncertainty, investing in youth talent isn't just the right thing to do—it's essential to Canada's long-term competitiveness. 'For 45 years, Shad has proven that early investment in young people yields long-term impact,' says Tim Jackson, President and CEO of Shad Canada. 'The students who walk through our doors become the engineers, researchers, founders, and changemakers who strengthen Canada's economy and solve real-world problems. As the demands of the workforce continue to shift, Shad is not just keeping pace—we're preparing youth to lead.' With 93% of participants recommending the program, and 91% saying it improved their critical thinking, Shad is building a generation that's equipped with the soft and technical skills employers value most. From AI and cybersecurity to clean tech and sustainable agriculture, Shad alumni are emerging as leaders in high-impact fields. Crucially, Shad is committed to building inclusive learning environments where students from all backgrounds—especially those underrepresented in STEM—can succeed. Through partnerships with organizations such as Pathways to Education and dedicated Black and Indigenous student outreach strategies, Shad ensures that excellence is accessible to all. 'If Canada wants to compete globally, we need to invest in the kind of leadership that doesn't just fill jobs but drives innovation,' adds Jackson. 'Shad is not just preparing students for post-secondary—it's preparing them to lead our communities, our companies, and our country into the future.' Alongside this Impact Report Shad will launch a national awareness campaign spotlighting alumni stories, partnerships, and community impact, underscoring how bold investments in youth today are shaping Canada's economy tomorrow. For 45 years, Shad Canada has equipped thousands of high school students—many from underrepresented and rural communities—with the skills, confidence, and networks to lead in STEAM, entrepreneurship, and innovation. With over 24,000 alumni, the program continues to deliver what Canada needs most: adaptable, collaborative, creative problem-solvers ready to shape the future. Man Robbed Of Rs 14.5 Lakh Cash Garland At Gunpoint After Rajasthan Wedding

A man carrying a garland made of currency notes worth Rs 14.5 lakh was robbed at gunpoint. He was returning from a wedding in Bhiwadi in Rajasthan's Alwar district. The incident occurred on June 1 and left the victim with head injuries. Mr Shad, a relative of the groom from Kishangarh Bas town, rented the cash garland from Haryana for the wedding ceremony. Made from around 3,000 notes of Rs 500 each, the garland was meant as a grand gesture to honour the groom, a common tradition in Indian weddings. According to police, the robbery occurred while Mr Shad and another person were on their way back to Haryana on a motorcycle, carrying the rented garland. Near Chuharpur village, a Hyundai Creta approached them at high speed, deliberately ramming their bike to stop them. The assailants then threatened Mr Shad with a gun and forcibly snatched the cash garland. He was also hit on the head, resulting in injuries. Police officials quickly arrived at the scene, inspected the area, and launched a search for the suspects. Deputy Superintendent of Police Kailash Chaudhary confirmed that a case has been registered based on Mr Shad's complaint and that investigations are underway. Authorities are actively working to identify and apprehend the accused. In India, wedding cash garlands are a traditional symbol used to bless and honour the bride and groom. They represent prosperity, respect, and goodwill. In a related incident last year, a groom in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut abandoned his wedding procession to chase down a man who snatched his cash garland. The incident occurred on a highway during the traditional wedding ride on horseback. A mini-truck driver reportedly tore off the garland and fled, but the groom quickly hopped on a passerby's bike and gave chase. He caught up to the driver, climbed onto the truck, forced him out, and, along with others from the wedding party, confronted him. The driver claimed he took the garland by mistake and had no intention to steal. No official complaint was filed, but a video of the dramatic chase went viral on social media.

Businessmen oppose tariff rationalisation

Listen to article The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has strongly opposed proposed changes under the draft National Tariff Policy 2025-30 presented by the Engineering Development Board. Terming the measures anti-industry, LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad warned that the new policy could have serious repercussions for Pakistan's industrial base, trade balance and economic sovereignty. "While reforming the tariff regime is important, the current proposal is likely to increase Pakistan's reliance on imports, shifting the country further away from a manufacturing-driven economy," he said, according to a statement issued on Tuesday. Shad was of the view that following a substantial reduction in import duties and the elimination of additional customs duty and regulatory duty, the government risked turning Pakistan into an import-dependent economy. He cautioned that lower tariffs would spark a surge in imports, thereby putting immense pressure on the current account and foreign exchange reserves, which were already under stress. "Pakistan cannot afford such liberalisation at the cost of macroeconomic stability," he emphasised. The LCCI chief criticised the proposed tariff spread of 0% to 15% as too narrow to reflect the development needs of a diverse industrial landscape. "Even globally competitive and specialised economies such as China maintain a much wider tariff spread to protect sensitive sectors. This narrow spread will blur the line between manufacturers and importers, discouraging local production," he elaborated. Shad underscored that such changes would cause revenue loss to the government while exacerbating the public debt burden. "The expected drop in customs revenue will need to be compensated through indirect taxes or further borrowing, both of which will hurt the economy." Pointing to the already high cost of doing business, the LCCI president stressed that the move would further impede industrial growth. "Our industries are already burdened by high energy tariffs, inefficient labour markets and a complex tax regime. These tariff cuts could lead to shutdowns and job losses." He urged the government to reconsider the premature rationalisation and engage in meaningful consultation with industry stakeholders to develop a tariff structure that could support both industrialisation and exports.

Businessmen slam tax ordinance

Listen to article Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) President Mian Abuzar Shad, has termed the recent amendments made through the Presidential Ordinance to the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 and the Federal Excise Act 2005 as dangerous for the business community. He stated that the extraordinary powers granted to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) through this ordinance threaten private business autonomy, civil liberties, and the stability of the economy. Shad called for an emergency meeting of all Chambers of Commerce and Trade Associations across the country, to be held at the Lahore Chamber on Monday. He expressed grave concern over the newly added Section 3A in the Income Tax Ordinance, which allows immediate tax recovery based on a High Court or Supreme Court decision, bypassing the due legal process. Similarly, Clause 6A added to Section 140 empowers the FBR to freeze a taxpayer's bank account and withdraw funds without any prior notice or legal proceedings, which he declared unacceptable. According to the LCCI President, the newly inserted Section 175C authorises the FBR to appoint its officer in any business premises to monitor production, services, and stock—an act considered as a direct breach of business confidentiality and a blatant intrusion into private enterprise. Furthermore, amendments to the Federal Excise Act have criminalised the use of fake stamps, barcodes, or labels, tightening the grip on businesses. Granting powers of checking and confiscation to other departments could undermine the constitutional jurisdiction of central authorities.

Former TV news anchor accused of lifting girlfriend by the throat in drunken rage, slamming her to the ground set to stand trial

A former South Dakota TV news anchor accused of grabbing his girlfriend by the throat in a drunken rage and slamming her to the ground several times is scheduled to stand trial in June. Shad Olson, 52, allegedly assaulted the unidentified woman in her home in Rapid City, SD, in February of last year. According to an affidavit of probable cause, Olson 'kept calling his girlfriend of eight years a crazy b—h' and forced her to flee her home barefoot while he 'chased her.' The report states that Olson 'flipped her over and picked her up and threw [her] down on the floor' as much as five times. The victim shared that she felt fortunate the incident happened on a carpeted surface, saying the cushioning likely prevented broken bones during the alleged assault. The alleged victim told authorities that Olson had assaulted her on previous occasions and that the violence was triggered by his drinking as well as his reaction to political developments. 'Shad is stressed over politics and it makes him drink,' the girlfriend is alleged to have told authorities. According to the affidavit, Olson 'doesn't work' and has 'no source of income.' She said that she 'pays for everything in the home' while he 'worries about the country.' The victim told investigators that 'she has been going through this for eight years and thought she was going to die.' During the alleged assault, the victim was 'chased' by Olson, who 'told her to not ruin his reputation' as he 'continued to follow her.' The woman told investigators that she eventually went back into the house. 'As [she] entered the front door, Shad lifted her up by her throat saying 'You made me do this' and continued shaking her while her feet were off the ground,' according to the affidavit. The girlfriend managed to pry herself loose from Olson's grip and flee to her neighbor's house while barefoot before a sheriff's deputy eventually arrived, the affidavit stated. Olson was arrested and eventually released on $5,000 bail that was put up by Jodie Frye, a former legislative candidate. He was subsequently charged with aggravated assault-domestic violence, a felony offense. In November 2024, the Meade County State's Attorney's Office dismissed the felony charge against Olson. The reasons for the dismissal were not detailed in public records. However, Olson continued to face a charge of simple assault-domestic violence, classified as a Class 1 misdemeanor in South Dakota. His trial is slated to begin June 5. Initially, Olson was set to enter a plea agreement. However, he later withdrew from the agreement, opting instead for a jury trial. Olson began his career in journalism in 2000 as a reporter and news anchor for KOTA Territory News, an ABC-affiliated television station based in Rapid City. In 2010, he was suspended from KOTA after delivering a speech at a 'tax day' rally held by Citizens for Liberty, a local Tea Party chapter, which raised concerns about journalism ethics. He subsequently resigned from his position on May 11, 2010. By 2012, Olson returned to broadcasting with KNBN NewsCenter 1, an NBC-affiliated television station in Rapid City. In February 2017, he was replaced by two staff reporters in the station's prime time 5:30 slot. The exact date of his departure from KNBN is unclear, as there was no official statement from the station's management. Olson worked as campaign counsel for Neal Tapio, a Republican contender for a US Congressional seat who was defeated in the GOP primary by Rep. Dusty Johnson and then-Secretary of State Shantel Krebs in the race for the state's at-large congressional seat during the 2018 mid-terms. The Post has sought comment from Olson and Frye.
