Dar's US visit sets stage for stronger trade ties
Listen to article Pakistan's trade relations with the United States are set to strengthen following Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar's recent visit to Washington DC, said the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Saturday. In a statement released on Saturday, LCCI President Mian Abuzar Shad praised the economic diplomacy led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy PM Dar, crediting their leadership for restoring macroeconomic stability and global confidence in Pakistan. He called the visit a "landmark step" that signals Pakistan's intent to revive economic momentum and expand global partnerships. During the trip, Dar held a key meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where both sides discussed deepening cooperation in trade, investment, technology, agriculture, and minerals. Shad welcomed their joint commitment to building structured and sustainable mechanisms for bilateral engagement. Dar's address at the Atlantic Council also drew praise. The deputy PM spoke of Pakistan's transition from aid dependency to trade-driven growth. Shad said this forward-looking approach reflects the aspirations of Pakistan's business community and sends a strong signal to investors. He endorsed Dar's commitment to open Pakistani markets to American goods and his push for a comprehensive trade deal with the US. He said this strategy would boost investor confidence and unlock opportunities for both sides. He added that Pakistan's reforms to improve ease of doing business and attract foreign investment should further reassure US stakeholders. Shad noted that the US is already Pakistan's largest export destination, especially for textiles, garments, leather, and surgical tools. He pointed out that Pakistan is also the second-largest buyer of US cotton, reflecting deep trade links. He underscored that Pakistan's textile sector would greatly benefit from predictable trade frameworks and preferential market access. A free trade agreement or bilateral investment treaty with the US, he said, would be a game-changer for Pakistan's economy. He praised the government's strategic diplomacy and expressed LCCI's full support for efforts to enhance trade ties and foreign economic relations.

Delay in Chief Justice appointment not a constitutional crisis, says expert [WATCH]
KUALA LUMPUR: The delay in appointing a new Chief Justice does not amount to a constitutional or institutional crisis, says constitutional expert Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi. While acknowledging the leadership gap at the Federal Court following Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat's retirement, Shad said the judiciary remains functional and orderly. "I do not quite agree with my brother lawyers and academicians who say that we are rudderless and leaderless. I think that's an overstatement," he told the New Straits Times' Beyond the Headlines. He added that both the High Court and Court of Appeal can continue functioning, and a stopgap measure could be introduced to minimise disruption. "What can be done—which will be an incomplete solution—is that the Chief Judge of the High Court of Malaya could be appointed in an interim capacity as the President of the Court of Appeal," he said. Shad, who was interviewed via video call, spoke ahead of the appointment of an acting Chief Justice, who was named by the Judiciary on July 3. Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim is now acting Chief Justice, performing the duties of the office until a permanent appointment is made. "With that, the Court of Appeal can function, and the High Court, of course, functions. It's the Federal Court that cannot operate today or tomorrow—but hopefully, God willing, in the next few days, there could be an appointment to the Federal Court." Under the Federal Constitution, the Court of Appeal president would usually act as Chief Justice in the event of a vacancy. However, that role is currently complicated by the retirement of its previous holder, Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim. His last day of service was on July 2, before the acting Chief Justice was named. Shad, a former member of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC), also dismissed the idea that the delay reflects a failure on the JAC's part. "I don't think it's an oversight. The retirement is not an overnight decision—we knew it was coming," he said. He also said he was sad that neither Tengku Maimun nor Abang Iskandar were granted short-term tenure extensions, saying both were highly regarded for their integrity and leadership. "I feel extremely sad that a judge as exceptional as Tengku Maimun has been given some sort of message that she's not suitable for leading the judiciary for another six months," he said. "Abang Iskandar is also highly respected for his integrity, and he too has not been extended." Shad said while the situation was not ideal, it should be seen as an opportunity to examine how such transitions can be managed more effectively in future. "This is the first time in recent memory we're facing such a situation. Like many things, we learn from it. We look at the current variables, and we move forward."

LCCI for addressing Gulf visa challenges
Listen to article President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry Mian Abuzar Shad has urged the government to take immediate and concrete diplomatic steps to resolve the mounting challenges in the issuance of business and labour visas by the United Arab Emirates, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. The LCCI president said that continued delays and restrictions in visa issuance are causing serious disruptions to trade, investment and workforce mobility, which is affecting Pakistan's overall economic prospects in the region. He expressed deep concern over the growing number of complaints being received from businesspersons, exporters, investors and human resources who are facing significant obstacles in obtaining visas from these countries, which have traditionally been among the country's most important trade and labour partners. He said that the business community is suffering due to the lack of access to key Gulf markets where Pakistan has deep-rooted commercial and labour ties. These restrictions are not only causing distress to our entrepreneurs but also harming the nation's economic interests abroad. He strongly urged the federal government to immediately initiate high-level diplomatic dialogue with the concerned countries to resolve these issues on an urgent basis. Shad said that thousands of Pakistani businesses operate in these regions and that a significant portion of Pakistan's foreign remittances and exports are linked to the Gulf market. In light of this, any hurdles in the issuance of business and labour visas would not only dent Pakistan's economy but could also affect the development of host countries that benefit from skilled Pakistani labour and investments.
