Greg Olsen: Judge Shedeur Sanders solely for his on-field performance
Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz and Caroline Fenton are joined by the NFL on FOX analyst to discuss the chatter surrounding the Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback and what needs to be the main focus for all involved. View more Video Transcript And kind of looking at the next level, at the NFL level, some of these players are rushed because these players are now celebrities, and it feels like there's no bigger celebrity in football. There's no more conversation happening about any other player than Shadour Sanders. So from a broadcaster perspective, how do you approach covering someone who is as polarizing as a player like Shadour? Yeah, I think you just cover them for what they are on the field. I don't think it's any of our, listen, every coach, I think evaluating a player as a, as the head coach is very different than evaluating the player as the color commentator. During the game, right? What, how Shadour Sanders is on a Tuesday meeting, or what he, that's not a real, that's not, I don't know. I'm not in the meetings. I think it's very hard for me to pass judgment, and this is not unique to Shadour. But we want to do this to all young coaches, uh, young quarterbacks. We did it last year to Kayleb Williams. How much was he studying film? How much of that was Eberflos in the system. And we have these same conversations about every young quarterback every single year. And I think really the only people that have the insight into being fair in their, in their evaluations are the people in the building, and that's the coaches and the players. But I think to your point, and it's a good one. The idea of having to coach players to like the level of their celebrity, I think that's where coaches have to do a good job and just realizing that none of that matters, right? Even though your fan base is clamoring for a player because he was a famous player in college, or because he won certain awards or whatever it was, only you know if that player is ready to play at the NFL level. And sometimes you got to make hard decisions. Sometimes you need to do things that might be against the grain, but at the end of the day, it's up to Kevin Steanisky about whether or not Shadour Sanders is ready to play or not. And regardless of how good he was in college, regardless, regardless of how famous he is or popular, it comes down to whether you can play NFL quarterback. And I thought the other night he looked really good. I thought he looked poised. I thought he looked calm. I thought he looked in complete control. But that was step one. I, I, I think we have a, Everyone is very quick to swing the pendulum back and forth. He had no place in the NFL, and now he's gonna be a Pro Bowler. There's no such thing as nuance anymore. But that's the job of the coach. The media is always gonna kind of swing to the extremes, but the coach in the organization has to make sure they stay level-headed. They don't rush that development process. So when he does get on the field, whenever that is, he's in a position for success. Close

What changes for Shedeur Sanders, Browns after his preseason debut?
Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz and Caroline Fenton discuss the rookie quarterback's performance in Friday's preseason game against the Panthers and if he should feel even more confident heading into the rest of training camp. View more Video Transcript Now, again, it was three quarters of work. It was one preseason game. I'm not gonna get too high or too low on anything that we see in a preseason game, especially when it's just one. But so far, we're in one exam in the semester, we don't have final semester grades yet. We haven't taken the final exams yet, but in his first test, his first exam, Shadour Sanders gets an A. This is why this was lose-lose for me though, Caroline, like, look, I'm getting killed on Instagram right now because inside coverage of the show I've hosted a long time, uh, for Yahoo Sports. We talked about Shadour and I said I thought him playing was lose-lose because if he comes out and he's awful, we're all gonna overreact to it. And if he comes out and he's great, we're all gonna overreact to it. And I'm just getting destroyed by Browns fans that are telling me today I owe an apology. I stand by the overall take, like, this is exactly what the problem is. He is like Kevin Stefanski is a two-time coach of the year. So if you believe Kevin Stefanski is an idiot, then you should probably leave this conversation. I don't believe he's an idiot, which means he's listed his depth chart based on everything he's seen throughout the course of the entirety of the offseason. Now Shadour was playing because, the second and third quarterbacks on the depth chart both have hamstring injuries and they're protecting Joe Flacco. So he gets in and he makes the most of his opportunity, which is what we all want. Like, I want to succeed. I also want Dylan Gabriel to succeed. Hell, I'd love to see Kenny Biggott getting his starting job. There aren't enough good quarterbacks in the NFL. More is better. But the problem here is that now everybody wants to turn this into should, should Duer be starting? Well, this is three quarters of a preseason game playing a vanilla offense. He, or defense. He did everything that's being asked of him, and he did it really well. And I want to praise that. I want to say loudly from the mountaintop, Shadour, you kick. But dude, that was awesome. Congratulations. What does that mean for the depth chart? I don't think it means anything because at some point, We didn't get to see Dillon Gabriel against this defense. We didn't get to see Kenny Pickett against this defense. They're still trusting Joe Flacco, especially with their schedule at the beginning of the season as a starter. So this creates more hype and more, uh, more, everybody wants to get more into it, but I'm not sure that it actually changes the result, which just makes all of this more frustrating for me, Caroline. And look, I agree with you. This doesn't change the depth chart. I'm not gonna say that it doesn't change anything, because what it changes for me is my perception of Shadour and his ability to be a quarterback in the NFL. I think it does change some things, but does it change the depth chart? Probably not. Mary Kay Cabot, who is more plugged into the Cleveland Browns than any other reporter out there. She's been covering the Browns for years. She even came out and said it, that Kevin's he said this doesn't change much. This doesn't change anything for us, really. It's gonna take more than 3 solid quarters in a preseason game for us to completely uproot our plans. I think that's the correct response. Again, we don't, as fans and as broadcasters and lovers and appreciators of this game, can't get too high or too low on what we see in a preseason game. And a coach certainly can't get too high or too low from what they see in a preseason game. Close

Why Shedeur Sanders starting preseason opener is ‘lose lose' for Browns
Yahoo Sports' Jason Fitz and Caroline Fenton discuss Cleveland's decision to start the rookie quarterback in Friday's game against the Panthers and - no matter what - it will simply fuel the criticism towards the former Colorado star. View more Video Transcript This is, to me, the ultimate lose-lose for the Browns. And I know Browns fans are gonna get my mentions, and they're gonna get so mad at me. I, let me be clear, I'm not anti-Shadour. In fact, I'm rooting for Shadour at this point. I think the narrative has gone so far the wrong way on Shadour. I would love Shadour to come in and absolutely crush it. But this is a lose-lose for the Browns because he's going into this game, by the way, in part. As you saw the tweet earlier from Mary Kay Cabot, because of the hamstring concerns on two of the four other quarterbacks, they, they're limited to the position. So now he's starting. You don't want to put Flacco in any sort of a weird risk situation. He's at the top of your depth chart like all of this leads us to Shadour starting. So now what? If he goes in and he's absolutely terrible, it only feeds everybody that wants to find a reason to hate Shadour Sanders. So that's negative portion number one. Also understanding that he's coming off of missing time with the sore shoulder, how many reps has he really gotten with everybody? Like, all of these things are gonna make it difficult. Then the other side of it is if he comes in and absolutely crushes it, if he just nails everything you could possibly ask him to nail. Well, now the Browns are gonna be in an even worse PR situation where the world is going to expect massive changes to their depth chart based on the limited amount of actual film we're getting on Shadour. So now, all of us sitting in front of a microphone, everybody on Twitter is gonna start just yelling at the Browns about 20s, 25 plays that we're supposed to use as more weight than any of the practices. The Browns' coaching staff told us everything they needed to tell us about where they think Shadour is in his process by having him fourth in the depth chart. So nothing has changed in the last 72 hours that's suddenly going to make the coaches catapult him to number one overall. So, the problem here is if he's wildly successful, it only builds pressure for suddenly them to make changes. He may not be ready for or they as an organization may not be ready to support. And if he comes out and he sucks, instead of it just being, hey, here's a fifth-round quarterback that's trying to work these things out and get better, It's got to be, well, Shadour's not good enough. Like, this is all such a wild loss for the Browns. If it's any win or lose, it still loses for popular conversation around Cleveland. And the fan base just gets, it has a megaphone so all of the conversation becomes magnified. If he does go out there and let's say throws for 200 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 0 picks. And I understand that in the NFL if you are listening to the fans pretty soon, you will be sitting with the fans, but you are naive to think that. That kind of conversation on social media and amongst the fan base and on the first takes of it all doesn't matter inside of a locker room and in front of a front office. And I think that that's the reason why a lot of teams, 31 teams in the league, decided to pass on Shadore Sanders, because you are damned if you do and you are damned if you don't. Close
