Leon Bridges review: Soul power of Texan star shines through at rain-soaked Iveagh Gardens, Dublin
Leon Bridges, Iveagh Gardens, Dublin ★★★★☆ A newspaper in his home town of Fort Worth, Texas once described Leon Bridges as someone whose 'music sounds like he looks' and they were bang on. When he appeared to a sold-out Iveagh Gardens resplendent in a light blue demi safari suit and oversized shades, the handsome 36-year old looked like he'd just stepped out of an early 1970s episode of Soul Train. Even if you happened to be wearing earmuffs, you could've still hazarded a fair guess at what he was hawking. Bridges has released four excellent albums in the last ten years, veering from Motown stomp to progressive R&B, and last year's Leon is his best yet, a rich southern soul stew with even a hint of Van Morrison about it. He got down to business with two of its strongest cuts, the Marvin Gaye-ish When A Man Cries and a marvellous 'trip down memory lane' with Panther City, a tune which evoked the Isley Brothers at their breezy best. His superb seven-piece band were groovier than a new set of tires from the off but Bridges voice was equal to them, smooth as silk at the mic in between bouts of rug cutting to the Hammond swirl of Better Man or the bass-driven Northern Soul chug of Flowers. Leon Bridges and his band on stage at Iveagh Gardens, Dublin. 'What's up Dublin? Make some noise,' was pretty much the extent of his inter-song patter, and even though Leon isn't quite up there with his idols in the showman stakes, it didn't really matter as he testified his way through songs as great as Coming Home. Sadly, while every soul present was on Bridges' side, the weather wasn't. Once the serious rain got started, it didn't let up which always puts a damper on an outdoor show. Still, two of his collaborations with fellow Texans (and hipster Shadows) Khruangbin – Mariella and a well-received, if unfortunately titled, Texas Sun – did their best to keep spirits up. Better again was a three-song run from 2018's Good Thing. You Don't Know, Bad Bad News, and If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be) all proved irresistible, taking us from the discotheque to a head-nodding jazz club to a Pharrell Williams/Nile Rodgers rump shaker. The latter even had his two guitarists temporarily going Disco Lizzy as they harmonised lines. Shapes were thrown by smiling faces despite the downpour. River, a moving, gospel-tinged plea for spiritual renewal, found the sodden crowd in fine voice, Peaceful Place reminded one of Paul Simon's world music forays, and the closing Beyond is a love song Sam Cooke would have considered a good day's work. Bridges offered his thanks for us putting up with the rain. He was worth a soaking.

Strictly Come Dancing star turns down Oasis tour tickets in furious rant
A former Strictly Come Dancing contestant has revealed that she doesn't know "anything" about Oasis despite the iconic brothers returning to the stage for the first time in 16 years Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Ann Widdecombe wasn't too impressed when she heard Oasis for the first time on today's Jeremy Vine programme, admitting that she wouldn't see them in concert. The band of brothers are reuniting on stage for the first time in 16 years tonight at Cardiff's Principality Stadium to kick off their highly-anticipated tour. However, former politician and reality star Ann revealed that she wasn't a fan - and hadn't even heard their music before - while appearing on Jeremy Vine's Channel 5 show. When Jeremy said that he knew she wasn't impressed by the iconic musicians, Ann said: "I don't know anything about Oasis. My acquaintance with pop music stopped with Cliff Richard and the Shadows." Ann then listened to the band for the very first time live on-air, with Jeremy placing a pair of headphones and a bucket hat on her head. Listening to Oasis hit Morning Glory, she shook her head before telling Jeremy: "The only thing I could make out there was an exhortation to wake up." She added: "First of all, the headphones were on over my hat which probably didn't altogether help. Secondly, the only lyric I could make out was 'wake up, wake up'. Morning Glory is the plant that you find in Kenya." When Jeremy told her that the phrase has other meanings, she said: "Oh has it? I don't want to know anymore." Jeremy then began to speak to a listener who is heading to the gig tonight and began to ask whether he would take Ann if he had a spare ticket - however, Ann soon interrupted. "No, no, no, no. I've been to one pop concert in my entire life and that was under duress because my niece could only go if I went with her," she said. "It was Boyzone. I like Shane Lynch because we were in Big Brother together but I would not want to go to a pop concert again. "It's loud. I had ear muffs, I actually to ear muffs with me and you have to stand up all the time and everybody around you is doing all this nonsense. No." Thousands of fans are descending on Cardiff for tonight's Oasis return and the band have made a last minute change to their line-up just hours before the gig. Backing vocalist Jess Greenfield is no longer listed in the tour programme despite being announced to perform with the group.

Holidaymakers say 'Oh my God' as video captures extreme heat at tourist hotspot
Holidaymakers say 'Oh my God' as video captures extreme heat at tourist hotspot A viral TikTok video showing a frying egg in Turkey's 42°C heat has left some British holidaymakers worried about their upcoming trips to the popular tourist destination Marmaris, Turkey. (Image: Anton Petrus via Getty Images ) British holidaymakers with their sights set on soaking up the sun in Turkey are being warned by locals about the extreme heat they may face in the coastal nation bridging Europe and Asia. Turkey has increasingly become a favoured destination among UK tourists seeking guaranteed sunshine. A study from On the Beach earlier this year showed a marked increase of 54% in bookings to Turkey by Britons compared to the past two years, surpassing even Spain's longstanding appeal, as British travellers pursue consistently sunny climates. But as the peak of summer nears, those venturing to Turkey are advised to pack thoughtfully. TikTok footage shared by Shadows restaurant and dance bar in the vibrant resort of Marmaris, situated on the Mediterranean coastline, has raised concerns amongst potential British visitors. The footage shows how temperatures can scorch beyond 40 degrees. The video depicts an employee of Shadows quickly frying an egg in a pan that had been left out under the unforgiving Turkish sun at the venue; such intense heat could start cooking the egg. This raises concerns about the impact of extreme temperatures on skin. On the day that the video was taken, the Shadows employee confirmed that Marmaris was sizzling at 42°C, mentioning in particular "no oil" in the pan while cracking a "fresh egg". Article continues below British bystanders in the vicinity who saw what happened responded with cries of "Oh my God!", reports Bristol Live. The recent viral footage of an egg frying on the scorching pavement of Turkey has sparked concern among British holidaymakers anticipating their summer visits. One apprehensive traveller shared: "We're coming in August, I hope it's cooled down by then!" while another feared: "That's dangerous weather." Others drew from personal accounts, with someone recalling: "I went to Antalya last year [at the] end [of] July. It was 52 every day [and] was unbearable!". Despite the dramatic visuals, some sceptics have questioned the authenticity of the video, wondering whether the pan had been pre-warmed to enhance the scene and challenging the reality of an egg frying naturally outdoors at a temperature of 42°C. As BBC Weather's reports, Marmaris is poised to hit temperatures averaging 35°C this week. Advice for staying cool in hot weather In very hot weather those most at risk include the elderly over 75, people with severe illnesses like cardiovascular or pulmonary diseases, and those taking medications that amplify heat sensitivity. To minimise these risks, the NHS recommends avoiding direct sunlight where possible. If exposure is unavoidable, it suggests using sun cream, wearing a hat, and dressing in lightweight clothing. Lowering your body temperature can also be helped by eating cold food and drinks, with advice to avoid alcohol, which can raise body temperature. Signs of heat exhaustion Heat exhaustion is typically not a medical emergency, but if left untreated, it can escalate into heatstroke. Heatstroke is a medical emergency and can, in some instances, lead to death. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, and a fast pulse. The skin may be pale and clammy, and the person may be very thirsty. Importantly, a person experiencing heat exhaustion may also have a slightly elevated body temperature, but not as high as in heatstroke If you or someone else is experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion that are difficult to manage or you require advice, you should call 111 or seek help online. However, in more severe situations, you should dial 999. Article continues below According to the heat mortality monitoring report for England in 2024, approximately 1,311 deaths associated with heat were recorded during the four heat episodes in the summer of 2024.
