Dinar-Dollar Volatility: Seasonal and Structural Factors

By John Lee. A report by the Future Iraq Institute for Economic Studies and Consultations reportedly highlights significant fluctuations in the exchange rate of the Iraqi Dinar (IQD) against the US Dollar on the parallel market over the past two decades, driven by a mix of seasonal, political, and macroeconomic factors. Key factors cited in the report include: Timing of national budget releases; Public holidays in major trading countries, especially China and Iran; Dollar sales by the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI); Political developments and financial policy changes; Geopolitical disruptions affecting foreign currency demand. People gather as an ambulance carries the dead body of an unidentified woman killed in an explosion that occurred while revellers were swimming at the Lido beach in Mogadishu, Somalia August 3, 2024. PHOTO:REUTERS A seven-year-old girl was allegedly abducted, sexually assaulted, and murdered in the Mandrah area of Rawalpindi. According to police, the incident took place in the Paanch Marla Scheme area under the jurisdiction of the Mandrah police station. The victim's father, Nauman Farzan Masih, stated that he has two daughters and two sons, with the eldest being seven-year-old victim. On the day of the incident, relatives were visiting the house for a community Eid gathering. Around 3pm, Shafaq went outside to play near the house. When she didn't return by 6pm, the family began searching for her. After failing to get any information from neighbours and relatives, the father, along with his wife and brother-in-law, continued searching and eventually reached the upper floor of an under-construction house in the neighbourhood, owned by a man named Shoaib. There, in a room resembling a washroom or storage area, they found Shafaq's lifeless body. There were visible injuries on her neck and forehead, he said. The father alleged that unknown individual(s) abducted his daughter, subjected her to sexual assault, and then murdered her. Police have registered a case under Section 364-A (kidnapping of a minor), 376(iii) (rape), and 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code. According to officials, the girl's postmortem was delayed due to the unavailability of the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) and the victim's parents were made to wait the whole night at the Gujar Khan hospital. Upon complaining, they were told the PFSA team had gone to Attock. However, the team arrived in the morning. The police said the case has been registered under the complaint of the victim's father.

Source: Former leaders unite in new front for Iraq's 2025 elections

Shafaq News/ A civil political front has been formed in Iraq to participate in the upcoming legislative elections in October, a well-informed political source revealed on Saturday. The source told Shafaq News that the front would include former Prime Ministers Haider al-Abadi and Ayad Allawi, along with Adnan al-Zurfi (formerly tasked with forming the government), former Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq, MP Sajjad Salem, and other Sunni and Shiite figures from Basra, Al-Anbar, Saladin, and Nineveh provinces. The front is reportedly set to contest elections across all Iraqi regions, not just in the provinces of the aforementioned figures. In a similar move, a coalition of prominent Iraqi political figures formed the Iraqi National Civil Alliance in February to run in the upcoming elections.

US tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China still in effect, White House confirms

Shafaq news/ White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt confirmed, on Tuesday, that tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China are still set to take effect next month. Levitt, during her first media briefing, stated that there is no specific date for the imposition of tariffs on steel and copper. President Trump is also considering new tariffs on China, which are scheduled to take effect this Saturday. Last week, President Trump declared he would impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada starting February 1, unless the two countries take steps to address the dual challenges of fentanyl trafficking and immigration to the United States. Trump confirmed during his inauguration that the tariffs are coming, stating that foreign nations will bear the cost of the duties, although these taxes are typically paid by local importers and often passed on to consumers. Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said her country will "continue to work to prevent the imposition of tariffs," but emphasized that Canada is also preparing response plans. Meanwhile, Canadian Finance Minister Dominique LeBlanc remarked that Trump could be unpredictable, adding that "they should not be surprised and that Ottawa is fully prepared to respond to any of these scenarios."
