#TECH: Exploring emotion and colours through photography

THE Expression of Colour Emotion (EEW2025) exhibition is more than a visual feast, currently on-going from July 21 to Aug 28 at the Shah Alam Gallery, is an immersive exploration of colours in photography. Showcasing 106 works by members of the Federal Territory Photography Art Movement (ASFON WP) and the UiTM/ITM Alumni Photography Association (Fokus), alongside selected works from educators, invited artists, and Sony Malaysia, the exhibition is a vibrant testament to the emotional power of visual storytelling. "Each image on display, whether a quiet monochromatic study, a saturated burst of hues, or a delicate play of light, carries an intimacy that invites viewers to slow down and feel," said ASFON WP president, Nazri Sulaiman. "Colour is not just a technical element in photography," he said. "It is a living language that conveys mood, memory, and meaning, often beyond what words can express." Beyond the aesthetic experience, EEW2025 carries an urgent appeal, the establishment of a dedicated National Photography Gallery in Malaysia. Such a space, the organisers believe, is crucial to preserve the nation's photographic history, foster innovation, and create opportunities for local photographers to present their work to wider audiences. "Photography in Malaysia deserves a permanent, dedicated space where its history and future can coexist," said EEW2025 project director Shamsul Kamal Zakaria. "EEW2025 is not just an exhibition, but a statement on the importance of recognising photography as both art and cultural heritage," he said during the exhibition launch recently. "The exhibition shows the technical skill, cultural awareness, and emotional depth of Malaysian photographers. The diversity of genres, from documentary and portraiture to abstract and conceptual, reflects the richness of the country's visual narratives," he said. "Visitors are encouraged not merely to view the photographs, but to experience them, to notice how a deep blue might evoke stillness, how a burst of gold might summon nostalgia, or how the interplay of shadow and crimson might suggest longing," he added. The exhibition was officiated by National Film Development Corporation (Finas) chairman Datuk Hans Isaac.
