Two dead in landslide after heavy rain lashes Mumbai; flights, trains delayed

Mumbai: Two people lost their lives and two others were injured after torrential rainfall in Mumbai triggered a deadly landslide in the city's Vikhroli area on Saturday. Flight and train operations were also hit due to the heavy rain and there were traffic disruptions due to waterlogging. The incident took place around 2.39 A.M. at Varsha Nagar in Vikhroli Parksite, when a portion of soil and stones from a nearby hillock collapsed onto a hut. Four members of the Mishra family were trapped under the debris and were immediately rushed to Rajawadi Hospital. Doctors declared Shalu Mishra (19) and Suresh Mishra (50) dead, while Aarti Mishra (45) and Ruturaj Mishra (20) are undergoing treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed that both injured are currently stable. Soon after the incident, emergency response teams, including the fire brigade, police, and BMC staff, reached the site and began evacuation. Several nearby residents were shifted to safer locations as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, Mumbai struggled with widespread waterlogging and severe traffic disruption following continuous downpours. Major arterial roads were flooded, vehicles remained stranded on the Western Express Highway, and the Andheri subway was shut due to water accumulation. Several areas, including Kurla, Sion, Chembur, and Andheri, reported heavy waterlogging. Authorities also stated that waterlogging on railway tracks disrupted train operations, causing several delays. Local trains were reported to be running 15-20 minutes late, and passengers were advised to plan their travel accordingly to avoid inconvenience. Flight operations at Mumbai airport were also affected due to the heavy rainfall. Many airlines, including IndiGo, issued advisories urging passengers to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport. Mumbai Police issued an advisory warning of possible waterlogging across key areas and cautioned citizens against unnecessary travel. "Mumbai is experiencing heavy rainfall with an Orange Alert in effect. Waterlogging and reduced visibility have been reported in several areas. Mumbaikars are advised to avoid non-essential travel and to exercise caution while venturing out. Police have been instructed to be on high alert, and Mumbai Police is alert and ready to help Mumbaikars. In case of any emergency, dial 100 / 112 / 103," Mumbai Police said in its post.

Landslide in Mumbai's Vikhroli kills two amid overnight rains

A landslide triggered by heavy overnight rains killed two people in Mumbai's eastern suburb of Vikhroli early Saturday, officials said. Two others were injured in the incident, which occurred when soil and loose stones slid from a hillside and fell onto their hut. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the landslide struck at 2:39 am near Jankalyan Society in Vikhroli's Varsha Nagar. The site, which falls under the Vikhroli Park Site area, has been flagged as a landslide-prone zone and comes under the jurisdiction of the city's collector. According to officials, four people were affected when debris collapsed onto the hut. They were taken to Rajawadi Hospital, where two — Shalu Mishra, 19, and Suresh Mishra, 50 — were declared dead. The injured, identified as Aarti Mishra, 45, and Ruturaj Mishra, 20, are stable and under treatment in the hospital's trauma ward. The incident came as Vikhroli recorded some of the heaviest downpours in the eastern suburbs overnight. Between 11 pm Friday and 5 am Saturday, Tagore Nagar recorded 213 mm of rain while Vikhroli West saw 211 mm, according to municipal records. Surveys by the Geological Survey of India have identified Vikhroli as one of the eastern suburbs with the highest number of landslide-sensitive sites. Informal settlements, often built on the slopes of these hills, are home to lower-income and marginalised communities who remain exposed to such risks because of limited housing alternatives. In May, the BMC had urged residents of these landslide-prone zones to relocate to safer areas. Civic officials issued notices to vacate homes along the slopes, advising people to move to designated safer pockets.

Red alert issued as overnight rain batters Mumbai, triggers landslide in Vikhroli killing 2

A torrential downpour battered Mumbai overnight Friday into Saturday morning, flooding large parts of the city and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a two-day red alert for the district. Several suburban pockets recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall in just five hours, officials said. The heavy showers also turned fatal in the eastern suburb of Vikhroli, where a landslide struck Varsha Nagar at 2:39 am on Saturday. Soil and stones from a hillside collapsed onto a hut, killing two people and injuring two others, according to preliminary reports. The victims were identified as Shalu Mishra, 19, and Suresh Mishra, 50. The injured, Aarti Mishra, 45, and Ruturaj Mishra, 20, were admitted to Rajawadi Hospital. The red alert comes as Janmashtami festivities are set to begin Saturday, raising concerns about safety as crowds gather for the Dahi Handi ritual. Neighbouring districts have also been placed under warnings, with an orange alert in Thane through Tuesday and a red alert in Raigad on Saturday. #WATCH | Railway tracks filled with water as heavy rainfall lashes Mumbai since last night Visuals from Dadar railway station — ANI (@ANI) August 16, 2025 The IMD, which had earlier issued a yellow alert for Friday and an orange alert for Saturday, upgraded its warning as the intensity of the rainfall grew late Friday night. 'Owing to the low pressure area which has developed in the Bay of Bengal, a trough is running from the Bay of Bengal up to the Arabian Sea which is called an east-west shear zone. The impact of this system will be felt across the Konkan region,' said Shubhangi Bhute, director of IMD Mumbai, on Friday. Between 11 pm Friday and 5 am Saturday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded the heaviest rainfall in the western suburb of Marol at 216 mm, followed by 213 mm in Santacruz and 207 mm in Andheri. In the eastern suburbs, Vikhroli saw 214 mm, Ghatkopar 204 mm and Powai 200 mm. In Mumbai, Sion received 144 mm, while Worli and Dadar recorded 137 mm each.
