She said in an interview with Filmybeat, "Hamare zamaaane mein aisa nahi tha ke pure din saath mein baithe rahe because I was also busy working and even him. I would come home from work and entertain his guests. Dekh liya, khana vana ho gaya sab ho gaya. Then I would say, I will go now because my mother will wait for me and she would scold me. Uss zamaane mein parents were very strict, I come from a Muslim family, Iranians are very strict. I never went shooting alone. My mother was always with me. Toh aisa kabhi nahi hua ke poore poore din aur raat saath bitaye ho. (During our times it wasn't like we will spend the whole day together because we were both busy working. I would come home from work though, go to his house, look after things, entertain his guests, look at all the arrangements for him and his guests. Then I would quickly rush back home as my mom would scold me. Our parents used to be very strict. I never went on a film shoot alone. There was never a time when we spent days and nights together)." She further spoke about choosing her career over love. "I have said this many times that we didn't get married because Papaji (Shammi Kapoor's father) didn't allow the women in his family to work. I was ambititious. They didn't allow women in their house to work. Uss wakhat Geeta ji (Geeta Bali) ne bhi kaam chhod diya tha. Agar kuch hona hai shadi ke baad bhi, pichle darwaaze se jaake bhi insaan ishq kar sakta tha. He was right and I respect him immensely for that. Jinko pyaar ho jaata hai, woh karte hi hai. (I respected him (Shammi Kapoor's father) for his decision for not allowing the women in his family or his daughter-in-laws to work. But I feel that if someone wants to cheat in a marriage, they can go out and do it in anway. He was right though in taking his measures and I truly respected him)." When Shammi Kapoor's wife Neila Devi revealed he smoked 100 cigarettes a day: 'He used to drink heavily in those days'
Shammi Kapoor's life was marked by both professional success and personal tragedy. His marriage to Geeta Bali, though short-lived, profoundly shaped him, while his subsequent marriage to Neila Devi brought stability. Neila revealed Shammi's struggles with alcohol and his deep respect for Geeta, observing a yearly abstinence in her memory. The late Shammi Kapoor , one of the most celebrated actors of his time, was known for his charm and screen presence. Though often linked to several leading ladies, he found true love in actress Geeta Bali , whom he married. Tragically, their love story ended abruptly when Geeta passed away in 1965, leaving behind their two children, Aditya and Kanchan. Years later, on June 27, 1969, Shammi quietly tied the knot with Neila Devi in a private ceremony in Mumbai. Life Behind the Scenes In an interview with ETimes, Neila Devi opened up about Shammi's fiery temper and his habit of drinking heavily at parties. She shared that he would often react strongly, even over minor incidents like someone accidentally stepping on his toes. However, she noted that the next day, he would always ask her about what had happened, showing a willingness to reflect on his behavior. Over time, she said, he gradually changed for the better. Neila revealed that Shammi met Geeta Bali during an emotional rebound from his previous relationship with Nutan. According to her, Geeta deeply understood Shammi and gave him the encouragement he needed to flourish in his career. Their bond grew on the sets of Rangeen Raaten, eventually leading to a spontaneous late-night wedding at Banganga. Though Geeta didn't accept his proposal immediately, their love blossomed quickly. Neila also shared that Geeta's vibrant personality and sense of humour played a key role in shaping Shammi into the "Rebel Star." Her untimely death left a lasting impact on him — so much so that he began staying with Raj Kapoor and Krishna Kapoor and turned to alcohol heavily to cope with the loss. Geeta Bali's Lasting Influence on Shammi Kapoor Neila Devi revealed that Shammi had little restraint when it came to alcohol and cigarettes, often refusing to cut back despite concerns. However, he observed a deeply personal ritual every year — abstaining from alcohol between January 1 and January 21. This period marked the time when Geeta Bali had fallen ill and eventually passed away, and Shammi honoured it in her memory for the rest of his life. Neila also mentioned that his heavy smoking habit — reportedly up to 100 cigarettes a day — took a serious toll on his health and severely damaged his lungs. Health Struggles and Emotional Strength in Later Years Neila recounted that the veteran actor's health began to seriously decline in 2003, leading to a month-long hospitalization at Breach Candy Hospital where he was placed on a ventilator due to severe lung complications. His condition worsened over time, eventually affecting his kidneys and requiring regular dialysis, which increased from once to three times a week. Despite his own suffering, Shammi remained emotionally strong and encouraged Neila to stop worrying and live life fully. She also admitted that she had been so dependent on him that she didn't even know how to write a cheque, underscoring just how deeply he had managed every aspect of their life together. Prithviraj Kapoor had strictly forbidden women of the house from working; Mumtaz was forced to turn down Shammi Kapoor's proposal
Mumtaz was still a newbie in the Hindi movie industry in the 1960s, when she appeared in the hit song 'Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche' in the Shammi Kapoor-starrer film Brahmachari. They fell in love as soon as they met and Shammi proposed to her, but Mumtaz had to turn down his proposal despite being in love with him. In a recent interview, Mumtaz said that Prithviraj Kapoor, the father of Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor and Raj Kapoor, had a strict rule for the women of the house, and especially the daughters-in-law. Mumtaz said that Prithviraj forbade them from working so if Mumtaz was to marry Shammi, she would have to give up on her dreams, and she did not want to do that. In a chat with Radio Nasha Official, Mumtaz recalled, 'He proposed to me. Papaji (Prithviraj Kapoor) was very particular. He didn't want that the daughter-in-law should work, as simple as that. So Shammi ji told me that he doesn't want you to work, you have to give up and I was very ambitious. I said mujhe kaam karna hai (I want to work). He said Papaji is saying no.' Mumtaz shared that it was during this time that Raj Kapoor was casting for Mera Naam Joker, and she lost out on a role in the film because he did not want to go against his father's rules. 'There was one role where they cast that foreigner woman. Raj ji took my pictures and I was looking so beautiful because I was much younger so he asked Shammi ji, 'Shammi tu shaadi kar raha hai kya? (Shammi, are you getting married?)' He said, 'I don't know, it depends'. Obviously, he didn't know for himself so Raj ji said, 'I can't take you because there is this rule in the house',' she recalled. 'I don't blame them. They are right and this was their rule. Now the younger generation has started working. Earlier, they made Geeta Bali leave her work as well. And I respect that Papaji had this rule. Even today, there are so many people who don't approve of their wife's job,' she said. Shammi had been previously married to Geeta Bali, until she passed in 1965. He then married Neila Devi in 1969. Mumtaz married businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974. In the same chat, Mumtaz recalled her last meeting with Shammi Kapoor and teared up. She shared that she was invited to his last birthday by his wife. 'I went there and I saw him sitting on the chair and he was still drinking, I asked him, 'Why are you drinking when you're not well?' And that is the time I came to know… He said he won't live for long so then I said, 'You can drink, enjoy yourself.' He wanted to be happy so I didn't say anything. I sat with him for a while and then I came back home. It was very sad to see him dying,' she said and added, 'He was a wonderful person. He was a bit fussy about choosing because Shammi was such a beautiful man, if he wanted he could have had any woman but he was a very choosy man.' Shammi Kapoor passed away in 2011 at 79.
