New Zealand Cricket seeks new head coach for all formats
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand Cricket has begun a search for a new head coach to lead the Black Caps in all three formats after ruling out the incumbent Gary Stead, who has been national coach since 2018. Stead stepped down in April from the white ball formats and said he was considering his future as test coach. NZC hurried his decision when it said Wednesday it is now looking for one coach to cover all formats. South African Rob Walter, former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond and current assistants Luke Ronchi and Shane Jurgensen are expected to be interviewed. Stead coached the Black Caps in 52 test matches, winning 27 including the inaugural World Test Championship. Under his coaching, New Zealand won 56 of 97 one-day internationals and 64 of 119 Twenty20 internationals. New Zealand was runner-up on a countback of boundaries in the 2019 World Cup and runner-up at the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Stead took over as head coach from Mike Hesson, who had enjoyed success in company with captain Brendon McCullum. 'Brendon McCullum and Mike Hesson had left the team with strong values and a style of play and I've just tried to build and shape that further to grow our ability to be consistent in everything we do,' Stead said. 'It's been nice to be competitive across all three formats and I'd like to think that regardless of results, the opposition know the Black Caps are a team that won't fold and will always show the grit and determination to compete.' ___ AP cricket:

Kiwi cricketers involved in Indian Premier League returning home to New Zealand, Pakistan-based group head to Dubai
Ex-Black Caps fast bowlers Shane Bond (Rajasthan Royals) and James Franklin (Hyderabad) also hold Indian-based roles. As commentators, former Black Cap Danny Morrison and former White Ferns wicketkeeper Katey Martin have also been in India during this year's tournament. Meanwhile, the New Zealand contingent in Pakistan have already left the country for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. While on Friday it was announced that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) would relocate to the UAE to complete its 2025 season, it has since been confirmed that the league is suspended indefinitely. As players, Colin Munro, Tim Seifert, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell, Finn Allen, Mark Chapman and Kyle Jamieson are the New Zealanders involved. Kane Williamson is also there, in a non-playing role. Former Black Caps coach Mike Hesson is currently in Pakistan with Islamabad United, with fellow New Zealander Ian Butler also with the team as bowling coach. Should the IPL fail to resume within the coming weeks, the Herald understands the league will be moved to a date later in 2025, given India's upcoming tour of England in June. At present, there are 12 regular season games left in the IPL, before the playoffs. There has been no indication of when the PSL will resume, given no dates were specified when the tournament initially announced it would relocate to the UAE.

'Can't Expect A 14-Year-Old...': Shane Bond Calls For Patience With Vaibhav Suryavanshi
Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been the talk of the country ever since his record-breaking hundred in an IPL 2025 match for Rajasthan Royals. He may have registered a duck in his next innings, but the focus firmly remains on the 14-year-old's stunning hundred and immense potential. RR bowling coach Shane Bond, ahead of their next IPL clash against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday, revealed that the team management is 'protecting' the young star.

'Can't expect 14-year-old to be professional': Shane Bond reacts to Vaibhav Suryavanshi's failure vs MI, drops advice
Vaibhav Suryavanshi, 14, is the toast of the town after his whirlwind 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans. The Rajasthan Royals opening batter smashed 8 fours and 11 sixes in his 38-ball 101-run knock. However, the youngster learned that cricket is a great leveller against Mumbai Indians as he walked back to the hut after registering a duck. Ahead of the fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025, RR pace bowling coach Shane Bond advised the southpaw to learn from his mistakes and keep moving forward. Shane Bond also said that the team management has given the left-handed batter full freedom to express himself in the middle. In the four matches Vaibhav has played so far, Suryavanshi has registered scores of 34, 16, 101, and 0. With a century against Gujarat Titans, Vaibhav became the youngest-ever player to register a three-figure mark in the IPL. He also smashed the second-fastest hundred in the IPL, only behind Chris Gayle. "He's sort of got a bit of a licence to go out and just play, which he's done an amazing job so far, really, for a 14-year-old. I think the coaching staff haven't tried to complicate things too much with Vaibhav," Bond told reporters at a pre-match press conference in Kolkata on Saturday. "He missed out in the last game, but for us, you don't really want to panic with someone so young. I know Vikram Rathour talks about his game plans and the type of bowlers that he's going to come up against, and he'll do that again for this match. But outside of that, he's a pretty young kid, so I'm just happy for him to get out there and keep swinging," he added. The Rajasthan Royals coach also asked the fans to stay patient with the youngster as it is not realistic to expect a 14-year-old to be a thorough professional. He stated that Vaibhav will learn from experience going ahead in the tournament. "He's had a fantastic start, but he's also going to go through the ups and downs. You know, he's going to fail sometimes, and he's going to have to learn to deal with that, with someone so young. He's obviously a seriously talented player, but he's also still a kid, you know. So, he's sort of learning on the go. We're going to be really patient with him because you have to be," said Bond. "And the other part of it is just all the off-field stuff, the travel, you can't expect a 14-year-old to be a professional," he added further. Shane Bond also likened Vaibhav to his own kids, stressing the need to protect the teenage sensation from outside noise. "Like I've got a 16-year-old son and he's a teenager, so we're just trying to educate him on the things around and look after him, shield him a little bit from the social media stuff and all the trappings that come with the way he started. But he's a lovely kid, I really like him, he's quiet," said Bond. "And I love his steely determination and confidence. I think the way he's played so far has been spectacular. So, I think the boys are delighted for his success, and I hope it continues," he added.

'I just gave my bat': Rohit Sharma's post-match chatter with Shane Bond goes viral
Rohit Sharma and Shane Bond (Screengrabs) NEW DELHI: A light-hearted moment between Rohit Sharma and Shane Bond stole attention after Mumbai Indians ' emphatic 100-run win over Rajasthan Royals on Thursday. In a video posted by Rajasthan Royals' official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Rohit was seen joking with Bond's kid over a video call post-match: 'I just gave my bat to the old man right here. Make sure he doesn't use it, you use it.' Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The joke came after a powerful performance from the Mumbai skipper, who scored a brisk 53 off 36 balls, setting the tone for Mumbai's huge total of 217/2. Rohit and opening partner Ryan Rickelton (61 off 38) built a formidable 116-run stand at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Watch: After their departure, Mumbai didn't slow down. Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya smashed an unbeaten 48 each, with SKY finishing the innings with a six to set Rajasthan a steep target of 218. The Royals crumbled early in their chase. Teen prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi fell for a duck, and Yashasvi Jaiswal was out for 13, leaving Rajasthan reeling at 20/2. The rest of the batting line-up followed suit as Jasprit Bumrah (2/15) and Karn Sharma (3/23) dismantled the middle order. Astrologer Greenstone Lobo: Is Yuzvendra Chahal's India career over? With key players like Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer, and Dhruv Jurel falling cheaply, Rajasthan slumped to 117 all out in 16.1 overs. Only Jofra Archer, with a patient 30 off 27, offered brief resistance. The loss not only ended Rajasthan Royals' playoff hopes but also extended Mumbai's winning streak to six matches, taking them to the top of the IPL points table. Reflecting on the loss, Parag admitted, '190–200 would've been ideal… the middle order has to step up.' Meanwhile, Pandya credited Mumbai's recent form to 'simple, disciplined cricket' — and, perhaps, a lucky bat.
