SECLUDED behind the Durban Wanderers Club is a unique, high-octane world where motors rev, new bonds are created and Sundays are spent with high-speed family-fun. The Bug Bashing RC Club is encouraging the community to join the exciting world of radio-controlled (RC) fun. Also read: RC drifting takes over nation What began as a small group of friends with a common passion for RC cars has grown into a thriving club that's looking to expand the thrill of RC cars to other community members. Gareth Casey, one of the members of the club, said, 'A RC club is a gathering of people family, friends, anybody who enjoys radio-controlled cars ranging from electric cars, nitro cars and two stroke cars. It's a place where new friendships are formed and a place to have a great time, to learn new things and get to understand the ins and out of the hobby.' Shane Edwards, long-time RC enthusiast and founding member of the club, said that some RC clubs closed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Years removed since Covid-19 and Shane was determined to rekindle his passion and started the new club with new friends. 'The actual club has been open for almost a year, but we have been doing this together for a few years, together we thought of opening a club for the community to come and have fun on a weekend, play with their cars and spend time with their families and to relax,' said Casey. The RC club boasts four different tracks, a standard race track, drift track, crawler course and children's track for the young drivers. Casey said the club facilities also include braai areas, a bar, toilets and even a takeaway room for those who don't want to prepare food themselves. 'It's not about who's the fastest or who has the best car. It's about being part of something. The racing is fun, but the camaraderie is what keeps us coming back,' said Casey. The club meets on Sundays and on public holidays, whereas the track is open seven days a week. Shocking moment jealous boyfriend slices off clubber's ear for dancing with his girlfriend on birthday bar crawl
This is the shocking moment a jealous boyfriend was caught on CCTV slicing off a man's ear for dancing with his girlfriend at a party. Beau Lyons, 27, flew into a rage on a 'mini bar crawl' with his partner Shaunnia Connolly and their friends while they celebrated a birthday in Newport, South Wales. A court heard that victim Shane Edwards was left looking 'like something from Star Wars ' after being disfigured in the glass attack. The group had travelled 150 miles before ending the night at Mojo's club in Newport in March. While the friends drank and danced at the bar, Lyons flew into a rage at the popular nightclub after he spotted Mr Edwards sitting and talking to his girlfriend. CCTV footage showed Mr Edwards dancing with Miss Connolly before buying her a drink from the bar. The shocking footage then showed Lyons launching himself at Mr Edwards after spotting him dancing with his partner. He picked up a nearby glass and smashed it in to the the victim's face before throwing him in to a table. Shane Edwards was left looking 'like something from Star Wars ' after being disfigured in the glass attack after Lyons spotted him dancing with Miss Connolly Following the shocking assault a bouncer leapt in to action and pulled the jealous boyfriend off the injured Mr Edwards while clubbers at Mojo's watched on in horror. Prosecutor Nuhu Gobir said Lyons had already argued with Miss Connolly before he glassed unsuspecting Mr Edwards. Mr Edwards revealed he blacked out during the attack and came around in hospital covered in blood after his ear was almost completely sliced off. Since the incident the defenceless victim said he feels 'deformed' and is scared to go out. Mr Gobir said all Mr Edwards remembered was waking up in hospital covered in blood from his chest downwards. He was taken to Grange University Hospital and was found to have suffered a 5cm wound through his left ear towards the base of the skull. The glass had cut through all layers of skin tissue and the underlying structures of the ear, exposing cartilage and effectively splitting the ear in two. Lyons, of Saltney Ferry, Flintshire, admitted he had assaulted Mr Edwards but said he had no recollection of the incident and was sorry. He pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon. In a victim personal statement, Mr Edwards said: 'Since the incident I have been crying a lot, I am so upset about the state of my ear. I feel like I am deformed. 'I have had very bad anxiety including nightmares about someone always attacking me. This is happening every night and I don't get a lot of sleep because of it. 'I'm always looking over my shoulder when I am out, and go out with friends all the time, I don't want to be by myself. If it wasn't for one friend in particular I wouldn't be going out at all anywhere. 'Day to day I struggle to cope, I am anxious and paranoid and suffer with depression badly anyway but this incident made it worse. 'My left ear is permanently deformed and strangers have been making comments about it and someone said I looked like something out of Star Wars which has made my confidence way down. 'I have problems with my ear, it was leaking liquid and I kept having to go to hospital to get it redressed and it got infected. Since the incident I've had trouble hearing out of my injured ear which makes it hard to be in conversation.' Judge Eugene Egan said: 'The lower part of the ear is sliced away. You used a glass as a weapon. 'You well and truly launched yourself at the victim in this case and brought the glass crashing down on the left side of his ear. You were under the influence of alcohol and cocaine was in your system.' Lyons was sentenced to three years imprisonment.

Aussie dad slapped with $700 fine for son's illegal road act: 'Not a toy'
Parents are being warned they can cop hefty fines for allowing their children to perform illegal acts on Aussie roads. Queensland Police recently issued infringement notices totalling over $700 to a Mackay dad for allegedly permitting his 15-year-old son to ride a modified e-bike. The offences the 50-year-old man was hit with included permitting the drive of an uninsured bike, permitting the drive of a defective vehicle, and permitting the use of an unregistered motorbike. It comes as Australian authorities are increasingly cracking down on the use of e-bikes — with enforcement officers spotted targeting e-bike users in Sydney's CBD earlier this year. "We are seeing frequent instances of children sometimes as young as 12 riding high-powered non-compliant electric motorcycles, sometimes on busy streets around towns," Mackay Whitsunday District Highway Patrol Officer in Charge, Senior Sergeant Shane Edwards, said. "These e-bikes are often dangerous to the rider and other motorists, and to pedestrians on our roads and pathways." Since the beginning of the year, police in Mackay have conducted 18 street checks looking for non-compliant electric bikes. Infringement notices have been issued for a string of offences, including riding unregistered, unlicensed and uninsured vehicles as well as failing to wear an approved helmet, with those charged aged between 13 and 16 years old. E-bikes are growing in popularity with the younger generation, but come with a hefty price tag. The average price of an e-bike is $2,000. Entry-level bikes can cost around $1,000, with higher-end bikes costing up to $6,000, according to outdoor retailer REI. While states and territories have varying rules around e-bikes, they must all be propelled by the rider and cannot be reliant solely on a motor, with their top speeds to be capped at 25km/h. Ed Hore, President of the Australian Cycling Alliance, previously told Yahoo News Australia we need to get electric bikes that have a throttle and are capable of speeds well beyond the legal limits, off our roads. The other solution is to introduce a major licence change, he says, making anyone who rides one requiring a licence and insurance to do so. And while Hore says the main users of throttle e-bikes are food delivery riders, people across the country are noticing an alarming trend — children are now riding them. Senior Sergeant Edwards warned Aussies that road safety is "everyone's responsibility". "We will be addressing the dangerous and illegal use of e-bikes in our communities to ensure no one is seriously injured or killed," he said. 'Parents can be fined or even charged for allowing their children to ride these vehicles if unlicensed, unregistered, or modified.' 'Electric bikes are not toys, and the rules around the use of an electric bike are the same as a motorbike, regardless of being powered by an electric battery instead of petrol.' 'Mackay motorists can expect to see an increased presence throughout the Easter school holidays, with an increase in e-bike users expected.' Do you have a story tip?
