Jackson Fire Department unveils new drone

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)—The Jackson Fire Department has unveiled and tested a new drone to assist first responders. The Department reports the drone was donated by Industrial Steel Treating, a Jackson-based automotive supplier, last year. The company also covered the cost of training for three firefighters. The drone will be used by crews from the City of Jackson and Summit Twp. for firefighting, investigation, searches and rescues. 'It's just another tool that helps us do our job,' said Jackson Fire Department Capt. Shane Green in a news release sent to 6 News. Adding, ' They can be used for firefighting aspects, along with water and ice rescues. The drone can actually detect victims underwater. When looking for missing people with the thermal cameras, you're able to pick up heat signatures of victims. Tim Levy of Industrial Steel Treating says a major industrial fire that occurred last year on Aug. 22 inspired them to take action. This fire destroyed a vacant industrial facility on North St. near Hamilton St. in Jackson. Crews monitor debris, school canceled after massive fire near downtown Jackson 'If we had the drone, we could have thrown it up in about two minutes and gotten a full view of the fire. Plus the drone has the capability to find hot spots,' said Capt. Green in a news release sent to 6 News. 'We wanted to show our support for local firefighters and know when there's a major incident the drone will help the entire community. We're pleased to be a part of that,' said Levy in a news release sent to 6 News. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
