Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While S Radhakrishnan was elected unopposed as Vice-President twice, first in 1952 after the only other nomination paper filed was rejected and then in 1957 as he was the only validly nominated candidate; Mohammad Hidayatullah was elected unopposed in 1979. In 1987, Shankar Dayal Sharma was also elected unopposed, but only after the nomination papers filed by 26 other candidates were found to be invalid. Kaloor stadium to sport a beautified look with fresh coat of paint
The Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor, owned by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), is set to get a much-needed facelift — at least in terms of appearance — which has been long overdue, given its jaded look. The beautification work to give the stadium a fresh coat of paint has been progressing since April. It is likely to be completed by August. Since its inception, the stadium has been fully painted only once. The GCDA prepared an estimate, and the government gave its approval. Though the work was estimated at ₹2.50 crore, it was awarded for ₹1.35 crore through competitive e-tendering. Around 1.50 lakh sq. ft is being painted. The project got under way after the conclusion of the latest edition of the Indian Super League (ISL) season in April. At present, painting is progressing on the stadium's interior and exterior walls, as well as handrails. The work has been making steady progress despite the inclement weather. Nearly 50% of the work has been completed, according to a statement issued by the GCDA. While the beautification is welcome, the stadium is also in need of an infrastructure upgrade. A video of a leaking roof during a crowded ISL match had gone viral on social media some time ago. Besides, a senior Asian Football Confederation functionary had remarked last year that while the stadium has an amazing ambience, it was a 'recipe for disaster.' Among other things, the official cited its location in the heart of the city and the lack of infrastructure — including security arrangements and segregation of fans, officials, and players — as key concerns. The stadium, built on 12 of the 34 acres, with a seating capacity of 55,000, was commissioned in 1996. It was dedicated to the nation by then Vice-President of India Shankar Dayal Sharma. The first-class match between the visiting South African team and the Karnataka team — which had won the Ranji Trophy and Irani Trophy under the captaincy of former Indian cricket team captain Rahul Dravid — was the first cricket match hosted at the stadium. It was played from November 10 to 12, 1996. Since then, the stadium has hosted numerous international and first-class cricket and football matches. Incidentally, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's best-ever bowling figures in a One Day International — 5 for 32 — were recorded at this stadium against Australia in 1998. It also hosted matches of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup. The stadium is now the home ground of the ISL team Kerala Blasters FC.

Know about the first engineering college of West Bengal
The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur (IIEST Shibpur) is the first engineering college in West Bengal. The IIEST Shibpur traces its legacy to the mid-19th century, making it one of India's oldest engineering institutions. It began in 1843-44, when Civil Engineering classes were introduced at Hindu College, Calcutta, to train engineers for the Public Works Department. A formal Civil Engineering College was established on November 24, 1856 at the Writers' Building in Calcutta. With the founding of the University of Calcutta in 1857, the college gained affiliation and, after a brief period under the Presidency College, it relocated to Shibpur, Howrah in 1880, becoming the Government College, Howrah. It soon added Mechanical Engineering and became fully residential by 1889. Renamed Bengal Engineering College (BE College) in 1921, the institute grew rapidly, launching postgraduate and doctoral programmes by the 1950s, collaborating internationally — most notably with the University of Wisconsin — and establishing itself as a hub for advanced research. In 1992, the Government of India granted Deemed University status to BE College, formally inaugurated in 1993 by President Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma. It became a full-fledged university in 2004, renamed Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), Shibpur, introducing science programmes alongside engineering. Finally, in March 2014, BESU was declared an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament, becoming IIEST Shibpur — a premier national institution continuing a legacy of over 160 years in engineering education and research. IIEST Shibpur is ranked at the 49th rank in the Ministry of Education's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 engineering. It was ranked at 35th rank in 2023. In 2022, 2021 and 2020, the institute was ranked 40, 27 and 21, respectively. The Institute offers BTech programmes in various engineering disciplines, such as Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Science Engineering. IIEST provides MTech, MSc, MBA, and PhD programmes across multiple fields. IIEST Shibpur uses JEE Main scores for admission to undergraduate programmes.
