Ex-CM suggests using Rs 2 lakh crore unclaimed money for disaster relief

1 2 3 Shimla: Former Himachal chief minister Shanta Kumar has suggested that the central govt should come up with a law for the utilisation of Rs 2 lakh crore unclaimed money lying in various banks, insurance policies, and employee provident fund (EPF) accounts of those who died without any legal heir to claim it. He added that this money could be used for natural disaster relief, including in Himachal. The monsoon disaster in Himachal Pradesh should be declared a national disaster, and out of this unclaimed Rs 2 lakh crore, at least Rs 20,000 crore should be given to the Himachal govt for monsoon disaster relief, said the former chief minister on Saturday. He added that by making a law, this money would be put to good use as it is now the country's money, which was lying in accounts for years. "There can be no better place for its good use than in a natural disaster like Himachal," he added. The former chief minister has demanded that the Himachal govt and all the MPs from the state raise this issue strongly with the central govt. He stated that according to a report, Rs 42,270 crore is unclaimed in various banks across the country, Rs 32,273 crore in post offices, Rs 8,500 crore in EPF accounts, and Rs 20,062 crore in the Life Insurance Corporation of India. He added that much more such unclaimed money is lying with the govt.

'Historic Victory for Himachal': Shanta Kumar on SC ruling in Karchham Wangtoo Case

Shimla, July 19(UNI) Former Chief Minister and Union Minister Shanta Kumar has hailed the Supreme Court's decision to grant Himachal Pradesh 18 percent royalty from the Karchham Wangtoo hydroelectric project as a "historic judgment." According to him, this ruling will boost the state's annual income by Rs 250 crore, ensuring greater financial stability. 'The Supreme Court's decision to increase royalty from 12 percent to 18 percent after the completion of the project period is historic and will make Himachal Pradesh economically self-reliant,' Shanta Kumar said, extending his congratulations to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and expressing gratitude to the Supreme Court. Recalling his contribution to introducing the royalty system, he said, 'I am happy that around 35 years ago, I had the privilege of convincing the Centre to accept the principle of royalty for hydroelectric projects when I was the Chief Minister. At that time, under Prime Minister Narasimha Rao's leadership, the Centre approved 12 percent royalty for hydro projects across the country.' Shanta Kumar also urged the state government to intensify efforts to reclaim the Jogindernagar Shanan hydro project, currently under dispute with Punjab. 'The Shanan project, operating on Himachal's land and water, rightfully belongs to Himachal Pradesh. The government must pursue this case with full determination in the Supreme Court,' he added. Terming the court ruling as a stepping stone towards economic prosperity, Shanta Kumar remarked that with full utilization of its hydroelectric potential, Himachal Pradesh could become one of the most prosperous states in India.
