Ed Sheeran shares sweet video of call with Lewis Capaldi
The Shape of You singer shared the adorable moment with fans, captioning the video: 'Ringing my one and only to wish him goodnight.' In the clip, Ed dials up his friend and fellow musician, greeting him with: 'Hello mate, I'm just calling to wish you goodnight.' Lewis responded with: 'Hey baby, goodnight, my guy. Goodnight, my special guy.' The lighthearted exchange continued as Ed asked: 'What you doing?' To which Lewis replied: 'Just chilling on my couch right now. Pretty mellow.' And Ed followed with: 'I'll think about you right now, just before I go to sleep—and then whilst I'm asleep.' Lewis ended the chat by saying: 'Nice one, bro. I love you." Chart topping star left fuming over Ed Sheeran's Radio 1 Big Weekend performance
Music fans were thrilled when Ed Sheeran made an unscheduled appearance at the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend festival over the weekend - but a fellow music star had good reason to be less impressed Fans were delighted by Ed Sheeran's secret set at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Liverpool on Saturday. But there was one person who was a bit miffed over the unexpected appearance. I hear Tom Odell wasn't best pleased about the Shape of You star's surprise performance. Starting his set at 1.30pm on the Main Stage, Ed's appearance at 1.15pm on the New Music stage drew the crowds to him - and it didn't go unnoticed by Tom. 'Tom was expecting a big crowd for his performance but when Ed's show was announced everyone flocked to his tent and he wasn't happy,' said one source. Despite the mishap, the Big Weekend festival has been a hit for music fans - as other stars have unexpectedly appeared on stage. On Friday, Little Bit of Love singer Tom Grennan drove the crowds wild when he invited Spice Girls icon Mel C to join him on stage where they performed a duet of her song, When You're Gone. Tom said after his set on the Main Stage at Sefton Park: 'Mel is a good mate of mine, but she's a Scouse legend too so it just felt the perfect chance to do something a bit special together - thankfully she was up for it! "The whole event was just a brilliant experience and getting a few mates out on stage to join me really gave it an extra bit of something on top, but doing something marking the memory of the Hillsborough victims just felt right. 'Mel is such a supporter of that cause too, she really understands what it means to local people and has been involved with raising money for the support group over the years.' Wearing a retro Everton shirt while Mel wore a 90s Liverpool kit, the pair talked movingly about 'uniting the city' with Tom later adding: 'It's a special city with an amazing history, and obviously an incredible sporting rivalry, so hopefully we managed to get the tone just right. 'There were a few bantery boos from the Everton fans when Mel came out in the retro Liverpool kit, so I ran backstage and changed into an old Everton one to redress the balance, it seemed to go down well. 'Hopefully people had a great time as well as taking a second to remember the 97 people who lost their lives as a result of the Hillsborough disaster.' Tom was also joined by local rockers The Zutons, YouTuber KSI and pal Ella Henderson. Saturday's line-up saw Sam Fender, Sugababes, Myles Smith and Blossoms take to the stage on the Main Stage. And Canadian pop babe Tate McRae, American singing sisters HAIM, and British country group Mumford & Sons were among performers taking to the Main Stage on Sunday. The Mirror also caught up with The Saturdays star Mollie King at the music event - with the star appearing days after her triumphant return to the air following her most recent maternity leave. 'It's so good to be back,' she told me - and said she was made up to be reunited with co-host Matt Edmonson. 'I've missed this guy. He was the first person to visit and meet the little one.' The Saturdays star welcomed her second daughter, Lilliana, with cricketer Stuart Broad last December.

Ed Sheeran given unusual secret code name ahead of Big Weekend surprise set
Only 10 people knew that Ed Sheeran would be performing at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend today - and they used a secret code name when talking about the Shape of You singer Ed Sheeran was given a secret code name ahead of his surprise appearance at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend today, we can reveal. The announcement of his performance came just 45 minutes before the Shape of You singer, 34, took to the stage and security had to close the area after it reached capacity. Opening with Castle on the Hill, Ed performed old and new hit Shivers, A-Team, Don't, Old Phone and Photograph. Insiders said the performance had been in the planning for two months - but only 10 people knew about it. And to keep Ed 's appearance secret, they would refer to the singer as John Smith up until today. Radio 1 breakfast show host Greg James was one of the few people that knew about Ed's secret gig from the beginning. "I don't even tell anyone at work," revealed Greg. "I was sworn to secrecy. He wanted to do it as a surprise. He wanted to build that excitement. "I saw him an hour before in his dressing room and he said 'I'm worried because no one knows I'm here, no one's going to turn up and the tent's going to be empty.' I said 'You're Ed Sheehan mate, the tent's not going to be empty.' Big Weekend throws up those surprises. The tent was full, people got turned away." During his performance, Ed told fans he chose to sing on the new music stage as it's the only one he hadn't sang on and wanted to celebrate up and coming musicians. He told the audience at Sefton Park: "I'm glad you turned up. I know this was a secret. "I'm gonna play some songs that hopefully you know; If you don't know, it's gonna be a long hour for you." The singer added that by using his loop station, his set would be unique: "Everything you hear today is completely live. There's no backing track whatsoever. "It's made live on the spot - control of my feet - and at the end it's deleted and it won't be the same at the next show. The way that it works is you press record like this, and when you press play, it plays back and loops, and you can add layers on top of it." During his performance of latest song Azizam, Ed stopped and restarted his loop recording, telling the crowd: "I'm going to have to do this again again. This is how you know it's live. One more time." Ed, who has 14 UK number one singles and eight UK number one albums and headlined the Big Weekend music festival in Coventry in 2022, finished his surprise set with Bad Habits. A source at Big Weekend said: "The BBC knew Ed would draw in a huge crowd on the BBC New Music stage. The crowd were filled with hysteria as the Red head took to the stage. But just minutes after he took to the stage, the crowd was put on lockdown due to unprecedented demand meaning nobody else could get in until after his set." Sam Fender, Wolf Alice, Blossoms, Myles Smith and the Sugababes all took the stage for the second day of the three day event. Haim and JADE are among those performing on Sunday.

Spectator Competition: Tubular belles
Competition 3400 invited you to write poems to mark YouTube's 20th birthday. This challenge drew a large, accomplished entry which was both amusing and informative. Alex Steelsmith's double dactylic submission was a strong contender for a place in the winning line-up, as were Bill Greenwell, Mike Morrison, Frank McDonald, David Silverman, Elizabeth Kay and Janine Beacham. But the John Lewis vouchers are awarded to those poems printed below. I am the very model of a modern-day YouTuberist, The cornucopia of its gifts creates for me a catalyst, Since first I saw 'Me at the Zoo' my mood's been irrepressible And now in all my waking hours I beam up what's accessible: The medieval manuscripts and cheerful facts historical, Like who beheaded what's-his-name, for YouTube is my oracle. And Baby Shark Dance floats my boat, though hardly educational, While Fenton! Fenton chasing deer will always be sensational. The music choice is limitless, I fix myself a rendez-vous With Handel oratorios and then Ed Sheeran's 'Shape of You'. If anything is on the blink and proving unreliable A video will show me how to make the damn thing viable. For twenty years it's been my guide, I've 'liked' and 'shared' religiously And through my online searching I have watched it grow prodigiously. I say without a doubt, and my opinion is unprejudiced, YouTube's the very model for a modern-day YouTuberist. Sylvia Fairley
