Espionage case: 800 members of Varanasi man's WhatsApp groups on ATS radar
LUCKNOW The UP Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) is scanning credentials of around 800 people added to 19 'anti-national' WhatsApp groups operated by Tufail Maqsood, 34, who was arrested by the agency from Varanasi on May 21 on charges of spying for Pakistan, said officials on Friday. The details have been retrieved from Tufail's phone and credentials of people linked to his social media network are being cross-checked, said officials interrogating the accused. Tufail Maqsood, Delhi resident Mohd Harun, 45, who was arrested from Noida by UP ATS on May 21 and Rampur resident Shahzad Wahab, 35, who was nabbed in the same connection from Moradabad on May 18, are in ATS custody for interrogation. An ATS official said Tufail created around 19 WhatsApp groups to connect with different people of seven east UP districts including Varanasi, Jaunpur, Mau, Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Chandauli and Ghazipur. He allegedly radicalised them in the name of religion by posting inflammatory speeches of clerics and terror group 'leaders'. 'He posted content related to 'establishing Muslim rule in India before 2047 and enforcing Shariat law in the country'. And these contents were shared to him by a Pakistani woman Nafisa, whom he was in touch with for the past four months after coming in contact through social media platforms,' the official said. He said Nafisa's social media profile revealed that she was in touch with 240 youths in India, including six from UP districts including Varanasi, Lucknow, Bareilly, Kannauj, Moradabad and Rampur. 'It is suspected that Pakistan's secret agency ISI has been using Nafisa to connect with Indian youths and radicalise them to rope them in for spying and other nefarious activities,' added the official. Nafisa is suspected to have built a strong network of Indian youths and spreading hatred by inciting Muslim youths in the name of religion and atrocities on minorities in the country. She had roped in Tufail to make strengthen her network among youths, the official said. Earlier, the ATS had claimed that Tufail Maqsood, a resident of Jaitpura, Varanasi, was in touch with at least 600 Pakistani mobile numbers and shared sensitive information related to India's security. The agency stated that Tufail is highly radicalised as he used to share videos of banned Pak-based terror outfit Tehreek-e-Labbek's leader Maulana Shaad Rizvi and content related to 'revenge for Babri mosque demolition'.

Islamic Court Judgments Not Legally Valid Or Enforceable: Supreme Court
New Delhi: Islamic courts like "Qazi's Court", "Kaziyat's Court (Darul Qaza)" or "Sharia Court' have no recognition in law, the Supreme Court has reiterated. The court made it clear that any direction given by them is not applicable in law and neither are their decisions binding. A bench of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah -- while hearing an appeal by a woman seeking alimony on February 4 -- cited a 2014 judgment that said Shariat courts and fatwas do not have legal recognition. The woman was refused alimony by the family court which had relied on a settlement deed filed before an Islamic court. The decision was upheld by the Allahabad High Court. Criticising the approach of the Family Court, Justice Amanullah underscored that 'Qazi Court', '(Darul Qaza) Kaziyat Court', 'Sharia Court' and similar others have no recognition in law. Their decision is not binding and no one can be coerced into accepting it. The exception was when the affected parties voluntarily accept the decision and act upon it and such action is not in conflict with the law of the land. Even then, such decisions will be valid only between the parties who choose to accept it and not for a third party, the top court said. The judges also criticized the reasoning of the Family Court that since it was the second marriage of both parties, there was no possibility of the husband demanding dowry. Such a conclusion is conjecture and shows an ignorance of law, the top court said. The bench directed the woman's former husband to pay Rs. 4,000 per month as maintenance. This payment should date from the time she went to the family court, the judges decided. The woman was married in September 2002 through Islamic ceremony. It was the second marriage for both. Her husband divorced her in 2009 through an Islamic court. The woman then approached the Family Court seeking maintenance, but it rejected her claim pointing out that her husband had not abandoned her. She herself was the main cause of the dispute and departure from the matrimonial home due to her nature and conduct, the Family Court said.

Jharkhand youth arrested for backing Pahalgam terrorists in social media post
Jharkhand police on Wednesday (April 23, 2025) arrested a youth for posting a controversial message on social media in support of the terrorist responsible for killing 26 civilians in Pahalgam. He wrote in Urdu on X: 'Thank you Pakistan, thank you Lashkar-e-Taiba, may Allah keep you happy forever, Amen, Amen. We will be happier if RSS, BJP, Bajrang Dal and media are targeted.' The arrested accused has been identified as Mohammad Naushad, 31, a resident of Millat Nagar under Balidih police station area in Bokaro district. Balidih police station has taken him into custody and is questioning him. Ranchi BJP MLA C.P. Singh and former Bokaro MLA Viranchi Narayan were among the first to react to the post. They urged Bokaro Superintendent of Police Manoj Swargiary to take immediate action Later Balidih police station in-charge Naveen Kumar Singh has confirmed his arrest. According to the police, an FIR has been lodged against the accused under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Local BJP leaders demanded that a case of treason be lodged against the accused. Bokaro City Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Alok Ranjan said, 'We have received the complaint about a social media post, and have registered a case against him. Police are checking all his social media accounts. We are also in the process of acquiring all the information related to the accused.' On the other hand, Mr. Swargiary said that those who play with the law will not be spared, and police are keeping a close eye on anti-national activities. Pay tribute Meanwhile, BJP State President and Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand Legislative, Babulal Marandi, paid tribute to the people killed in the terrorist incident in Pahalgam and expressed condolences to the families, saying that Jharkhand BJP stands with them in the hour of grief. He added that this is the first terrorist incident in which terrorists have killed innocent and unarmed people by asking their religion, removing their clothes and forcing them to recite Islamic verse (Kalma). Expressing concern, he said that people with such mentality are present in Jharkhand as well. The Ministers in the Jharkhand government believe that Shariat is above the Constitution. Mr. Marandi was indirectly attacking Jharkhand Minority Welfare Minister Hafizul Hasan Ansari who had earlier allegedly said that Shariat comes first, then the Constitution. 'People in power are saying that Muslims are not in the grave, they are being patient, and if they come out on the streets, there will be carnage. People who speak such language are sitting on the chair of power. They do not have weapons, so they are attacking with statements,' Mr. Marandi said while addressing presspersons at the party office in Ranchi He asserted that if the battle of issues has to be fought, then there are many ways in democracy, but the language of violence is not acceptable in democracy.
