Sharjah Public Libraries set for diverse cultural programme
As part of its centennial celebrations, Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) will roll out a comprehensive cultural programme from May to July 2025. The agenda features a curated lineup of seminars, literary discussions and expert-led activities, organised in collaboration with leading cultural institutions across the emirate. The events form part of SPL's flagship initiatives, 'Institutional Collaboration' and 'Authors Spotlight,' aimed at enriching the public's engagement with knowledge, heritage and the written word. The opening event in the 'Institutional Collaboration' series, 'Reviving Forgotten Pages,' will be held on Thursday, May 29, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Sharjah Archaeology Museum. Organised in partnership with the Juma Al Majid Centre for Culture and Heritage and the Sharjah Museums Authority, the event features a panel discussion titled 'The Home Library: Promoting Reading and Organising Books.' The session will explore the cultural value of home libraries, emphasising their role in preserving literary heritage and fostering regular reading habits. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops under the title 'Book Clinic,' offering practical guidance on cleaning, preserving and rebinding old books. The event will conclude with a cultural tour of the museum, featuring an immersive experience in ancient writing techniques using clay and the South Arabian Musnad script. SPL will host 'The Cultural Message' on Wednesday, July 30, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Holy Quran Academy, in collaboration with Al Qasimia University. The event will explore Islamic civilisation's intellectual and scientific legacy and its influence on global progress. Discussions will cover the contributions of Muslim scholars to fields such as medicine, astronomy and mathematics, the enduring cultural impact of Islamic heritage, and the values of coexistence and tolerance. The programme also features a specialised workshop on Arabic calligraphy and Islamic ornamentation, offering participants a rich and immersive cultural experience. On Tuesday, July 29, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, SPL will conclude its 'Institutional Collaboration' series with a literary event titled 'Horizons of Writers and Poets – Echoes of Modernity,' held at the House of Wisdom. Targeting adults and youth aged 14 to 18, the seminar will explore the evolution of contemporary Arabic poetry through a blend of panel discussions, interactive workshops and a live poetry reading. The event will feature four poets from different generations, presenting a dynamic and multi-layered portrayal of modern Arabic verse. SPL will also host a panel discussion as part of the 'Authors Spotlight' series, which showcases influential literary and intellectual voices from the Arab world. Scheduled for Saturday, July 12, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, the session will feature acclaimed Iraqi novelist Ali Bader in a conversation moderated by Dr Amina Al Hashimi. The discussion will explore key moments in Bader's literary career, with particular attention to his works addressing themes of exile and identity, such as 'Papa Sartre.' Earlier this year, SPL hosted the 'Exhibition of the Lens of Literary Beginnings' from April 21 to May 4, collaborating with the Emirates Writers and Authors Union. The exhibition provided an interactive journey through the early creative experiences of Emirati writers, featuring digital displays highlighting their biographies and debut works. Visitors also had the opportunity to use vintage typewriters to write motivational messages encouraging reading, while enjoying a compact cultural cafe that added a warm, literary ambience to the experience. In an interactive touch, the exhibition invited visitors to write their own messages about reading on a vintage typewriter, offering a personal connection to the literary journey. A mini cultural café further enhanced the experience, offering a space for reflection and fostering a lively literary atmosphere.

Emirati folktales delight children at Sharjah Public Libraries event
The Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) organised the "Heritage Tales" event, introducing children aged 6 to 13 to the cultural significance of Emirati folktales and their role in shaping values, knowledge, and identity. Held under the Cultural Civilisation theme of SPL's year-long programme, the event aimed to foster a deeper appreciation of heritage through engaging, hands-on experiences. Organised in collaboration with the Sharjah Institute for Heritage at Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Centre, the event featured three interactive activities that combined storytelling, traditional crafts, and recreational activities, offering young participants a rich introduction to the UAE's cultural legacy. Eman Bushalibi, Director of SPL, commented, 'The 'Heritage Tales' event underscores the vital role of libraries as centres of knowledge and guardians of cultural heritage. As we celebrate 100 years of Sharjah's libraries, we also honour their legacy in connecting generations, preserving identity, and fostering a sense of belonging through meaningful cultural engagement.' Folktales as a gateway to learning The event opened with a workshop titled "The School of Tales", which explored the role of folktales in children's literature as tools for learning, character development, and cultural awareness. Children engaged with a selection of traditional stories authored by Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, brought to life through storytelling and discussions that introduced key Emirati expressions and cultural concepts. Identity woven into memory The second activity offered an interactive workshop on traditional Emirati clothing, highlighting the deep cultural significance of heritage dress. In the Talli embroidery corner, children explored the intricate art of traditional embellishment used in Emirati garments. The Kandura corner introduced boys to the national attire, emphasising its cultural importance, while girls in the Mokhwar corner had the opportunity to design their traditional dresses, learning about different patterns, styles, and the heritage they represent. Heritage competitions with a playful spirit The final activity featured heritage-themed competitions organised by the Sharjah Institute for Heritage in the entertainment corner. In an engaging and educational setting, children responded to questions about Emirati traditions and cultural identity. The event concluded with a ceremony honouring the winners and celebrating their cultural knowledge. 'Heritage Tales' is part of SPL's year-long centennial programme, which highlights the vital role of libraries in preserving culture, fostering knowledge, and promoting reading. Through a series of talks, tours, and workshops, the programme brings together cultural figures and institutions from across the UAE to celebrate and enrich Sharjah's literary and heritage legacy.

Sharjah Public Libraries hosts 45 Arabist students from Al Qasimia University
As part of its centennial celebrations, Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL), in collaboration with the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, hosted an event titled 'Cultural Renaissance,' welcoming Arabist students from Al Qasimia University. The delegation included 24 male and 21 female students, who took part in a cultural tour featuring a visit to Kalba Public Library and key historical, cultural, and tourist landmarks in Khorfakkan to deepen their understanding of Emirati and Arab culture while highlighting the pivotal role of public libraries in knowledge dissemination and intercultural exchange. The tour reinforced SPL's century-long mission of fostering culture and knowledge, positioning libraries as essential bridges between civilisations. It also underscored the significance of public libraries as vibrant platforms for learning, dialogue, and engagement, particularly for Arabist students specialising in Arabic literature. By providing immersive cultural experiences, SPL continues strengthening global appreciation for Arabic heritage and promoting meaningful connections between cultures. As part of the event's cultural programme, SPL hosted a panel discussion featuring Russian Arabist Anastasia Ostrokhova in the presence of Eman Bushlaibi, Director of SPL, along with researchers and cultural officials from the emirate. During the discussion, Ostrokhova reflected on her journey with the Arabic language, which began during her studies in Belarus. She shared how her fascination with Arabic culture and its rich history inspired her to master Classical Arabic, which she now considers her second native language. She deeply admired Arabic poetry and described it as 'one of the most refined forms of poetry in the world.' She also highlighted the remarkable structure of Arabic grammar and syntax, noting that its precision and clarity were among the most beautiful aspects of the language. The Arabist also recited a selection of classical Arabic verses, captivating the audience with her eloquent delivery. The delegation began its tour with a visit to Kalba Public Library, the oldest SPL branch in the eastern region. Aisha Khamis Al Kaabi, the library's chief librarian, provided an in-depth overview of its various sections and services. Home to 71,315 titles and 83,711 books, the branch covers various disciplines, including religion, philosophy, social sciences, literature, history, geography, languages, and the arts. It also houses a dedicated UAE heritage collection, a children's library, and a women's library, alongside reading halls, event spaces, and internal and external borrowing services. As part of the event, participants toured Khorfakkan's heritage sites, including the Portuguese Fort, the Heritage Village, the Old Market, Al Hisn, and the Old Market Museum. The visit provided a deeper understanding of the region's rich history and cultural evolution over the centuries, aligning with Sharjah's vision of preserving its heritage for future generations. The event concluded with a group Iftar, during which attendees engaged in open discussions and exchanged insights on the importance of libraries and cultural initiatives in fostering global intellectual exchange. At the end of the tour, the Arabist students expressed their admiration for SPL's services and facilities, describing them as comprehensive knowledge and community hubs that cater to readers' needs while fostering an environment rich in learning and cultural exchange. Sharjah Public Libraries has been a cornerstone in the emirate's cultural and intellectual renaissance for decades, catalysing knowledge, literature, and scientific progress. Sharjah's cultural institutions have aligned with the UAE's National Reading Month, which this year coincides with the centenary of SPL. Through various programmes and initiatives, they highlight the vital role of libraries in fostering the emirate's cultural and intellectual renaissance. Officials have affirmed that this rich cultural heritage has laid the foundation for a comprehensive cultural project that has strengthened Sharjah's status as a global capital of books, reflecting the emirate's vision of investing in knowledge as a driving force for development and innovation. 50 arabists join "Civilisational Culture" event by SL
Library-Led Celebration Sharjah Libraries hosted the event on Friday, titled "Civilisational Culture," with the attendance of about 50 arabists. The celebration marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of Sharjah Libraries and was attended by Eman Bushulaibi, Director of Sharjah Public Libraries. Cultural Tour Included Al Hosani stated that the event included an introductory tour of the libraries in the Eastern Region cities, along with several of their cultural and touristic landmarks. The aim was to highlight the educational and cultural assets of the area. Exploring the Enduring Legacy of Sharjah Libraries In remarks to 'Sharjah24', he noted that participants gained insights into the beginnings and establishment of Sharjah Libraries, founded a century ago, and their major contribution to the advancement and enrichment of culture in the United Arab Emirates. Dialogue and Discussion Al Hosani explained that the event, which began at Kalba Public Library, also included a discussion session in Khorfakkan's heritage area. Arabist Anastasia Ostrakhova spoke during the session, shedding light on efforts to promote the Arabic language within Russian civilization.

SPL's centennial celebrations begin with ‘Literary Roots'
The Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) launched their centennial celebrations on Thursday with a seminar titled 'Literary Roots,' featuring Ameera BuKadra, Chairperson of the Emirates Publishers Association and Co-founder of Ghaf Publishing, who highlighted Sharjah's remarkable efforts to weave literature and knowledge into the fabric of the community. The event also included a 'Creative Writing Techniques' workshop, led by author Abdelhadi Taqi. The seminar was held in the presence of Khamis Salem Al Suwaidi, Adviser at the Office of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah; Eman Bushlaibi, Director of Sharjah Public Libraries; Dr Amina Almarzouqi, Vice Chancellor for Student and Branch Affairs at the University of Sharjah; along with government officials, academics, and students. During the seminar moderated by the media figure Abdul Raouf Amira, BuKadra stressed the importance of reconnecting younger generations with their literary heritage. She shared how her father's library was pivotal in her intellectual development, encouraging her to explore pre-Islamic literature and later historical periods. He believed these works were essential for understanding the cultural and intellectual identity of Arabs and Muslims. She also highlighted the significant contributions of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in promoting knowledge and fostering a culture of reading in the emirate. She praised the efforts of Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority and Founder and Honorary President of the Emirates Publishers Association, whose initiatives have greatly supported Emirati publishers. She strengthened the publishing industry locally and globally. BuKadra commended the Ruler of Sharjah for fostering a vibrant cultural environment through landmark events such as the Sharjah International Book Fair, Sharjah Children's Reading Festival, and Sharjah Literature Festival, which bolstered Sharjah's status as a hub for writers, publishers, readers, and families, while also promoting Emirati culture globally. She also highlighted the UAE's publishing industry, noting its adherence to international standards in quality and design, which has boosted the global reach of Emirati books. She credited initiatives like Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi's PublisHer project for supporting emerging publishers and expanding their presence in international markets. BuKadra emphasised that publishing is not merely a business but a cultural responsibility that preserves Arab and Islamic knowledge. She also highlighted the UAE's role as a cultural hub, enriched by its diverse population and deep-rooted literary heritage, passed down through generations. The Chairperson stressed the importance of choosing books that align with readers' interests, emphasising that reading should be an enjoyable and personal experience. She advocated for giving children the freedom to select books that captivate them, fostering a genuine and lasting love for reading. Concluding, she highlighted the vital role of academic institutions in nurturing young literary talent. BuKadra encouraged universities and school libraries to promote Emirati literature through events that inspire students to engage with local creativity, ensuring the continued growth of the cultural landscape. Author Abdelhadi Taqi led a Creative Writing Workshop for university students. The session introduced techniques for helping aspiring writers develop their ideas into compelling creative texts. Participants engaged in writing exercises inspired by Sharjah, shared their work, and displayed their pieces on a tree trunk-shaped installation, symbolising 'Literary Roots' and highlighting the role of knowledge in shaping cultural and creative identity. Sharjah Public Libraries stands as a symbol of cultural and intellectual brilliance in the UAE and beyond. With a legacy rooted in preserving knowledge and fostering innovation, it has become one of the Middle East's leading cultural centres, providing access to over 791,328 diverse resources and unmatched global knowledge across various formats.
