My dad is suffering in the heatwave: Here are 5 products I recommend he buys to keep cool
We're all feeling a bit hot under the collar right now. The barometer's on overdrive and the brave among us may be thinking about sleeping in our refrigerators (PSA: don't do that - this is sarcasm). My dad is struggling too, and he's asked me to recommend a few products to help him keep his cool in the heatwave. Here are the 5 ideas I've come up with. A cooling fan is possibly the first thing we think of to cool us down in the heat, apart from an iced cold drink — that's coming later. But what puts me off the idea is the thought of having an unattractive appliance stationed in my living room, home office, or bedroom all summer. And, as a home writer, I instinctively want to find an attractive appliance. My dad was also looking for a cooling fan that wouldn't look out of place in his home and would blend into his interior's aesthetic. With this in mind, I came up with my best solution, Dyson's Cool Bladeless fan. Although, there is a downside. It's only available in the U.K, for £249 at Dyson. While this is fine for my dad, I wanted to find a cooling fan that's available in the U.S. So, as an alternative to the Dyson, I'd recommend Shark's TurboBlade Fan, which is $299 at Amazon. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. One of the best features of the Shark TurboBlade is that it has two arms that can be adjusted. This means is can blow air in different directions — now that's a cool idea in a heatwave. This Shark TurboBlade Fan is ultra customizable and can pivot, twist and oscillate, circulating and propelling air up to 80ft. The angle and direction can be changed to find the perfect cooling position and it has 10 power levels. Plus, it even has an Air Blanket Model, for smoothing sleep. When you're out for an adventure on a hot summer's day, there's definitely one thing you can't be without. You need to keep your drinks and food chilled. When your thirst needs quenching, you'll want to reach for an ice-cool beverage rather than a lukewarm refreshment. Although I'd opt for a larger, hard-cased cooler like the Ninja FrostVault Cooler, which is awarded 4.5 stars in our best cooler buying guide, my dad doesn't need anything as large as 45 quarts. He'd be better off with the Yeti Hopper M15. It's a soft cooler with a small capacity that will hold 32 cans. Don't worry, he won't go thirsty and there's still plenty of room for his cheese and pickle sandwiches! There's plenty of colorways to choose from, including King Crab — it's bright orange and a hefty $399 at Amazon. But, if you'd prefer to go under the radar and camouflage is your thing, the Olive colorway will fit the bill, and it's currently reduced to $240 at Amazon. Many of us enjoy coffee, whatever the weather, but when the temperature rises, it's refreshing to switch to a cold brew rather than a steaming cup of joe. But rather than relying on a coffee shop iced beverage, you can make your own at home and forego the expensive and the lure of the sugar-laden syrups. To make this all easier, Nespresso has created the Nomad Iced Coffee Cup, but it's proved so popular it quickly goes out of stock. Millie Fender, Managing Editor, Homes, has tried the 18-oz capacity reusable cup and says it's helped her survive the sweltering heat of her commute this summer. What's more, she tested the spill-proof cup by tipping it upside down to see if it will survive a chaotic car journey. While my dad doesn't frequent many coffee shops nowadays, or commute, he'd certainly benefit from the Nomad Tumbler, whether he makes it up to enjoy at home or to take on a car journey. And although it's tricky to get hold of, thanks to Nespresso's collab with Samra Origins, it's currently available as a limited version at for $25. The Nespresso iced tumbler is spill-proof, dishwasher-safe, and infinitely reusable. The limited-edition Samra Origins colorway also comes with fun illustrations along the bottom of the cup. While I don't advocate surviving solely on this sweet treat all summer, it's an indulgence that helps keep us cool. It provides a cooling sensation in the mouth, even if it doesn't reduce our core temperature. My dad is a glutton for ice cream, so recommending an ice cream maker is right up his street. And if he hears the word 'Ninja,' I know he's going to swipe it up, whatever it is! That's why I recommend the Ninja Creami, as it not only makes customized ice cream but also allows you to enjoy sorbet, gelato, milkshakes, and smoothies. What's more, it's currently on sale with a 13% discount at Amazon for $199. I'm looking forward to popping over to sample what he makes, and I'm definitely going to recommend he adds Biscoff to his mix! If ice cream isn't your thing, you could try the Ninja Slushi instead — it's a frozen drinks maker that will provide the chill without the cream, and it's currently $329 at Amazon. The Ninja Creami lets you make delicious frozen desserts from the comfort of your home — and we're not just talking about ice cream. This 7-in-1 machine can whip up sorbet, milkshakes and more with little to no prep and the simple push of a button. My dad's backyard is exposed to full sun, so although he already has a pergola with a bench, he needs a large parasol to provide added protection. It will also give me a shady spot to sit while I enjoy all that ice cream. Rather than having a parasol that's more suitable to be used with a table, he'd benefit from a hanging offset umbrella that gives him more flexibility. This Costway Steel Market Hanging Solar LED Patio Umbrella is just the ticket. The parasol features a 10-foot span, a heavy-duty base, and pre-installed solar-powered LEDs that illuminate at night. What's more, it's only $126 at Home Depot. It even has a crank handle for easy opening and closing. No more getting stuck under the parasol as you attempt to open it. This expansive Costway patio umbrella will provide you with added shade and sun protection in the heat. It spans 10 feet, and has 8 supporting ribs to support the canopy. It's can also be opened in 3 seconds using the crank handle.

Dyson's cooling fan slashed by $100 at Amazon right now — here's the rival you should buy instead
Dyson is well known for being, well, Dyson. And right now you can save $100 on one of the brand's impressive tower fan. But while it may be tempting to stay cool in the heat and make a big saving (because we all know Dyson's pricing isn't cheap), we'd urge you to hold off for just a second. It may sound like a great deal. Right now, the Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 has been slashed to $399 at Amazon, making for a grand 20% discount. But there's another cooling fan we recommend — although it's produced by Dyson's biggest rival. Eek! While we love the look of Dyson's Purifier Cool PC1 — it's simply sleek, streamlined and positively futuristic — we absolutely loved one of its main competitors. The Shark TurboBlade Fan gained an impressive 4.5-star rating in our recent review, and it's $100 less than the Dyson cooler even with that reduction applied. In fact, you can pick it up the Shark TurboBlade Fan for just $299 at TurboBlade Fan may not have quite the same eye candy appeal — it reminds me slightly of an old-fashioned projector screen — but my colleague Millie Fender, Managing Editor, Homes, was sufficiently impressed she gave it an Editor's Choice award. She wrote, 'I've never tried a fan like the Shark TurboBlade Fan, but now I have, I don't think I could go back.' This Shark TurboBlade Fan is ultra customizable and can pivot, twist and oscillate, circulating and propelling air up to 80ft. The angle and direction can be changed to find the perfect cooling position and it has 10 power levels. Plus, it even has an Air Blanket Model, for smoothing sleep. I'm intrigued to know why Millie rated it so highly. In her verdict she writes, 'This flexible fan offers the best of both worlds: concentrated high-powered cooling, and laid-back whole-room settings for a natural-feeling breeze.' But the ultimate benefit is in the fan's extra-wide construction, which she says 'makes it ideal for end-of-bed cooling to help couples survive those sticky summer nights.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. It sounds like Shark has put an end to night time arguments as couples no longer need to decide whose turn it is to have the cooling fan by their side. So how does it work? Unlike some fans that rotate and oscillate, giving a mixed level of cool air depending on where they are pointing, the Shark has two adjustable pivoting side arms, which allow you to shoot two jets of cool air directly out of the FlexBlade simultaneously, so both you and your partner stay cool at the same time. There are also plenty of other benefits. The fan was easy to assemble, just taking one minute to put it together, and it can also be disassembled for easy storage. Millie also noticed how quietly it runs, emitting a low, consistent noise that won't disturb your dreamtime. There's also a Dust Defence feature, and while it won't replace one of the best air purifiers, it will capture particles in the air to prevent dust and allergens from being cast around your home. However, watch this space, because although we recommend the Shark TurboBlade Fan as an excellent cooling fan, we haven't yet reviewed the Dyson Purifier Cool PC1. We'd be intrigued to see what the PC1 offers for that extra $200 (or, $100 with the discount) price point. You know where to find us, Dyson.

I tried it: Shark's new bladeless, shape-shifting fan is here to save summer
Living in an apartment without central air conditioning, I consider fans an absolute necessity, especially as the temperatures start rising. I rely on these gadgets to stay cool in rooms that don't have window or wall AC units, and I even favor them in rooms that do to save money and keep air circulating ... at least until I'm faced with unbearable heat. I have a few standbys (fan-bys?), but as a longtime home writer — and relentless comfort seeker — I'm always on the hunt for the next big thing. So when I saw that my colleague Julia Webb included the new Shark TurboBlade Fan in our Most Anticipated Products round-up for March, I had to give it a try. The brand says it's 'the most powerful bladeless fan' out there. How cool is that? After testing it, I can say it's pretty cool, indeed. Here's my honest review (aka what makes this fan the ultimate warm-weather companion). While you're at it, consider more ways to get your home in gear for the season with our guides to the best iced coffee makers and the best outdoor sofas. And here are our picks for the best Shark vacuums, so you can really make a splash at home. One of the things I appreciate about SharkNinja products, including the brand's vacuums and air fryers, is that they're really intuitive — and this fan was no exception. When I opened the box, there were three main pieces: a base and two 'fins' (bladeless fan attachments), each labeled with stickers for easy reference, along with a remote control and instructions. Setup was super easy: I clicked each piece into place in a matter of a few minutes. With the fan set up, I was eager to test-drive its shape-shifting abilities, something that caught my attention when I saw it at a media preview (and which we talked about in our Most Anticipated Products story). I was able to pivot the long, narrow fins from horizontal to vertical and — even more impressive — twist the vents in different directions to target different areas. Better yet, I was able to adjust the height of the fan so it was blowing at the exact level I needed, particularly helpful for cooling my entire king-sized bed. The fan oscillates up to 180°, so I'm sure it would also be useful for long tables or low seating arrangements. The TurboBlade has five power speeds to choose from, with the highest beating out other fans I had in my apartment in terms of intensity. Bonus: The TurboBlade has great coverage! According to Shark, it can blow up to 80 feet, which I happily confirmed in my testing. If I had to change something about the Shark TurboBlade Fan, I guess I would say the louder 'white noise' associated with the highest power mode. Though, as someone who tests products for a living, I'd say a slightly louder motor is a typical tradeoff for more powerful machines and settings. (For context, it wasn't loud enough to disturb a movie, and I know some people welcome white noise when they're sleeping.) The only other thing that could possibly make the Shark TurboBlade Fan more desirable would be if it doubled as an air purifier. Or maybe had a built-in speaker? Doubled as a floor cleaner? Otherwise, I'm curious to see if Shark ends up rolling out any additional versions: The gold finish is beautiful but I'd love to see a chrome option. I'll also note here that this device isn't cheap at $250. (That said, Dyson's bladeless fan is $370 when it's not on sale, so at least it's more affordable than that.) Pipe dreams aside, the Shark TurboBlade Fan managed to meet — and exceed — my expectations. I love how sleek it is, particularly helpful for smaller spaces, and that it's configurable for circulating air to different places. It's also one of the more powerful and far-reaching fans I've tested, particularly useful for cooling larger crowds or areas. I really appreciate the convenience of being able to control the fan from afar, and I love how easily it wipes down — no dust bunnies here. The loud white noise that accompanies the most powerful setting is a small price to pay in exchange for staying cool (and perhaps even saving some money on AC) when temperatures start to rise! We received complimentary samples of some products and purchased others ourselves, but we reviewed all products using the same objective criteria.

Shark's new bladeless tower fan rivals Dyson with better features and a cheaper price
Ditch the clunky tower fan in the corner of your home collecting dust and save a little bit on the electric bill those window air conditioners crank out. Shark just debuted the TurboBlade, a cooling fan that you won't mind taking up precious real estate in living spaces. Shark TurboBlade Fan Lauded as one of the most powerful bladeless fans, the Shark TurboBlade does it all. It pivots, twists and oscillates, so cooling breezes can sweep nearly every inch of your home. Shoppers will appreciate its unique modes, like Air Blanket, which provides widespread coolness at night. Nearly 4 feet tall and equipped with multidirectional vents, the TurboBlade's fan head pivots from vertical to horizontal, bringing coolness to any and all levels. Twist each end of the dual vents to position the airflow exactly where you need it the most. Speaking from experience, these multidirectional vents are a total game changer if you have a cramped space where beds or couches can block airflow. The fan can also swivel 180 degrees to reach more square footage in your home, with airflow spanning up to 80 feet. Similar to other bladeless options like the Dyson Cool, the Shark TurboBlade builds in 10 fan speeds plus specialty modes. That includes Sleep mode, which mutes chimes, dims lights and optimizes fan speeds. Meanwhile, Nature Breeze mode randomizes airflow to simulate natural wind, and BreezeBoost gives an extra burst of airflow for hot days. Its slim paddle silhouette is certainly less clunky and more streamlined than traditional tower fans. As someone who's used the Dyson fan for years, I still prefer its aesthetic, but Shark's latest innovation packs in more cooling capabilities, an ideal choice if you value function over form. Not to mention, it does so at nearly $120 less than the comparable Dyson Cool. In the realm of high-tech home products, there's always stiff competition. Shark has been a worthy adversary when challenging peers like Dyson. The brand even won me over with its FlexStyle, a multi-styler frequently compared to the Dyson Airwrap. It has an edge over others with its powerful suite of tools at unbeatable prices, and this launch only furthers that sentiment. Our deals team, consisting of senior editor Rikka Altland, editor Jacqueline Saguin and associate editor Elena Matarazzo, is passionate about unearthing deals that we would be tempted to shop for ourselves. This launch landed on our radar recently, and based on how much our readers and experts alike enjoy Shark's innovations, like the FlexStyle, we had to share the news.
