Fire breaks out in power meter, leaves 16 families without electricity for 10 hrs
Noida: A fire broke out in the meter panel of a residential tower at Shiv Shakti Apartments in Sector Mu-2 around 3 am on Friday, leaving over 16 families without electricity for more than 10 hours.
The fire, which began at the meter of flat 945, quickly spread to other meters in the panel, damaging all 16 units under the tower.
No injuries were reported, but several residents said they were briefly trapped and experienced suffocation due to smoke. As the power outage rendered stairways dark and inaccessible, residents struggled to exit the building. A quick response by an RWA member helped contain the flames before fire services arrived.

The affected tower is part of a GNIDA-built housing project from 2012, which consists of 119 towers and 1,904 flats. RWA president Dharmendra Rathi said this was the third fire-related incident in the society in a month and blamed inadequate infrastructure.
Residents expressed anger that Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) officials failed to reach the site until nearly 10 hours after the fire. NPCL later cited electrical overloading and substandard cabling as the root causes.

"The outgoing cabling laid by GNIDA cannot handle the power load, leading to frequent short circuits," said Shashank Andey of NPCL's metering division.
In a statement, NPCL said restoration work was underway, and power would be resumed after damaged meters were replaced.
