Teen accused of killing Irish chef to be tried as juvenile
A US judge has ruled that the teenager accused of the fatal shooting of Irish chef Shaun Brady in Kansas City, Missouri, will be tried as a juvenile—a decision that has sparked protests from the extensive Irish community in Missouri. Shaun Brady, originally from Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, was shot and killed on August 28, 2024, while at his bar and restaurant in the city's Brookside area, a district known for its nightlife and restaurants. Jackson County Courthouse The 44-year-old had emigrated to the United States a number of years ago and was well-regarded in the Kansas City hospitality scene. He was known as a friendly and caring host at Brady & Fox, the restaurant and bar he co-owned in the Brookside district of the city. He is survived by his wife, Kate, and their two children, Seamus and Mary. The suspect, identified as K.H. and can't be named as he is a juvenile, was 15 at the time of the alleged offence. Prosecutors had sought to have the teenager tried as an adult, citing the seriousness of the charges. However, during a recent hearing in Jackson County, a judge determined that the case would remain in the juvenile court system. The decision means the accused cannot face adult penalties, such as a life sentence without parole. If convicted, the sentence is likely to focus more on rehabilitation than punishment, with the possibility of release by the age of 21. Brady's death sent shockwaves through both the Irish diaspora in the US and his home community in Ireland. Tributes poured in at the time from friends, colleagues, and former classmates in Nenagh, where he had grown up. His funeral, held in Kansas City, was attended by hundreds, including Irish nationals living in the Midwest. The Brady family has not made a public statement in response to the judge's ruling. However, friends of the family have expressed disappointment, saying they believe justice is best served through an adult trial. The legal proceedings are expected to continue in the juvenile court over the coming months. Because of the accused's status as a minor, many aspects of the case will now be handled behind closed doors. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs has previously confirmed it is providing consular assistance to Mr. Brady's family. Brady had worked in a number of restaurants across the US since moving to the US and was remembered by friends as a 'gentleman, a brilliant chef, and a devoted father.' Judge rules that teen charged with murder of Irish chef in US cannot be tried as an adult
Shaun Brady was shot at close range in the car park of his restaurant, Brady & Fox, in Brookside, Kansas City on August 28, 2024 A judge in the US has ruled that a teenager charged with the murder of Irish chef Shaun Brady in Kansas City, Missouri, will be tried as a juvenile. Jackson County Family Court Administrative Judge Jennifer Phillips said the Co Tipperary man's 15-year-old accused killer will not stand trial as an adult. The judge has set a trial date for September having denied a request to send the case against the teenager out of family court to the general court system. The Kansas City Star reported on Wednesday that the judge ordered that the teen, who can only be named by his initials, K.H as he is a minor, will remain in secure detention. Judge Philips set the trial for September 23 and 24 of the accused who has been charged with counts of second-degree murder, attempted stealing of a vehicle, and armed criminal action. Brady was shot at close range in the car park of his restaurant, Brady & Fox, in Brookside, Kansas City on August 28, 2024. Shaun Brady News in 90 Seconds - May 17th At around 5.15 pm the victim went to the back of the restaurant to throw out empty boxes. Brady, who is a native of Nenagh, saw several people who had pulled up in a black Hyundai Elantra trying to break into his car, a red Hyundai Sonata which was parked behind the restaurant. Brady tried to warn the group off his car, and as they fled in their vehicle they got stuck in traffic at the car park exit. Brady then approached the car and the driver got out in a 'shooters stance' before pointing something at him. 'We just see Brady fall to the ground,' Kansas City Police Department homicide detective Clyde Harvey previously said as he described the CCTV footage to the court. According to the prosecution, DNA showed that K.H was the driver of the vehicle. Police had a partial registration plate number for the car, and later that day he was arrested with another teen, a 17-year-old, who is only known as L.M because he is a minor. L.M was also charged with second degree murder, but the charges were dropped and he was released from custody in late 2024. A juvenile court heard arguments to move K.M's case to adult court because according to Jackson County authorities it was a 'vicious, forceful and violent act' that endangered the community. The boy's attorney described him as a 'desperate, starving child' who was forced to sell drugs from the age of 10 to feed himself and his siblings. The Kansas City Star previously reported how Jackson County Family Court Administrative Judge Jennifer Phillips heard cases made by both the teen's attorney and the Office of the Juvenile Officer. In closing arguments K.H's attorney, Kirby Crick, told Phillips the youth had been failed throughout his life. Crick asked that she not certify him for prosecution as an adult as he 'never experienced a life without trauma, even in utero'. However, Dan Barry, representing the Office of the Juvenile Officer, described the shooting as 'vicious' as he asked for the case to be prosecuted in the general court system. Saying how the incident took from Brady's loved ones a 'family man', he said this was 'the most serious offense that can be committed'. On January 4, Brady's family and friends gathered for a funeral Mass for the talented chef at St Mary's of the Rosary Church in Nenagh, Co Tipperary. In an emotional eulogy, Shaun's brother Damien said: "Shaun Paul had built a wonderful life for himself and his family in Kansas [City] - a home for their kids. 'He worked tirelessly to establish and run his own restaurant and become a treasured part of the community, something we witnessed ourselves in Kansas [City] when the local community came together to grieve his death and again here today. 'Shaun was so proud to call Nenagh his home. When we visited his restaurant in Kansas [City], the walls were decorated with paintings of local landmarks - the castle, the church, an old painting taken from a book in mam's house in Summerhill. 'He kept a map of Ireland that hung in our family home and mam had wanted him to have it in his house in Kansas [City]. 'He never forgot where he came from.

Teenager charged with Kansas City murder of Irish chef Shaun Brady to stand juvenile trial
The teenager charged with the murder of Irish chef Shaun Brady in Kansas City last August is to stand trial as a juvenile in a trial that has been scheduled for September. Jennifer Phillips, a Jackson County Family Court administrative judge in the state of Missouri, has denied a request to move the case against the defendant, who was 15 years old when charged and has been identified in court by his initials, KH, from the family court and into the general court system, where he would face charges as an adult. The defendant is to remain in detention until and during the trial, set for September 23rd. The Kansas City Star reported that the judge heard testimony which outlined details of the youth's childhood as one defined by violence and a childhood cancer diagnosis. She also listened to an attorney for the Office of the Juvenile Officer present the violence which led to the fatal shooting of Mr Brady outside the restaurant in which he worked and co-owned. READ MORE Members of Mr Brady's family, including his wife Kate, were in court in April for a hearing as a video was shown in which a number of teenagers, including the accused, arrived at the restaurant in a car that, it was later confirmed, had been stolen. They attempted to break into a Hyundai car belonging to Mr. Brady, who interrupted the theft. A Kansas court report described how Mr Brady had kicked at the stolen car as it departed the scene. The vehicle then stopped and in the video, one of the occupants exits the car and shoots at the Irish man. Seven shell casings were recovered at the scene. The murder, which occurred just days before the Kansas annual Irish Fest, in which Mr Brady was involved, caused general shock. At that April hearing, the father of the teenager argued that his son should be tried a juvenile. 'Development goes a long way in life, and he hasn't gotten that far,' he said. The teenager stands charged with counts of second-degree murder, attempted stealing of a vehicle and armed criminal action. Two teenagers were originally arrested after the murder; one was later released without charge. A decision was taken not to reopen the popular Brady and Fox restaurant after Mr Brady's death.

Teen accused of killing KC Irish Fest chef fights not to be tried as adult
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Prominent Irish Fest chef and restaurateur Shaun Brady was shot and killed outside his own business in 2024. It was a killing that rocked the community to its core. Now, the 15-year-old accused of carrying out this cold blooded murder in broad daylight is fighting to not be tried as an adult. Prominent Irish Fest chef killed in Kansas City shooting The teen's dad said it wouldn't be fair for his son to be charged as an adult. 'Development goes a long way in life, and he hasn't gotten that far,' his dad said. 'He hasn't developed enough to understand a mistake—and mistakes will be made throughout his life.' No cameras were allowed in the courtroom. FOX4's Malik Jackson was the only reporter in the courtroom Tuesday. The state began by calling to the stand the homicide detective who responded to the scene. The detective recounted how the responding officer initially thought he was being called to an explosion – but it turned out to be gunfire. A video shown in court captured the moments when the 15-year-old and a group of teens allegedly arrived near Brady's restaurant, Brady and Fox, in a stolen car. Brookside community demanding change amid Shaun Brady killing According to the detective, they attempted to break into Brady's Hyundai. Brady, who was unloading boxes, saw this and intervened. Authorities said the three teens then returned to the stolen car, with Brady kicking and swinging at the car as they drove off. The state contends that the video shows the 15-year-old exiting the car and shooting Brady in the chest. Seven shell casings were found at the scene, along with another bullet that hit a nearby home. Brady's wife was emotional as the video was played in the courtroom. Brady also leaves behind two children. In court, the hardships the 15-year-old had endured throughout his life came to light. At just the age of four, the accused killer was diagnosed with cancer – a disease which returned at least three times before the age of seven. Because of the cancer, the teen was prescribed opioids at a young age. This developed into an addiction, which caused the teen to fail middle school. His mom testified that he's overdosed twice. Testimony also revealed that the teen had endured years of abuse, including being beat with a metal bat. In court, it was also revealed that his dad beat his mom so much that she went blind. Because of the food insecurity he was facing, the teen turned to selling drugs at age 10 to feed himself and his siblings. His attorney said he was neglected in every aspect of his life, with the state's own witness saying he's had a 'life full of trauma.' The teen's father claims this could have been avoided if the justice system had held his son accountable for previous crimes – burglary in 2021 and trespassing in 2024 – that never resulted in charges. FOX4 asked his father if he feels the justice system is partly to blame. 'Yes,' he said in response. He said he believes that the community would be safe with his son on the streets—as long as he get the rehabilitation he needs. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
