Police K-9 stabbed during standoff after man robbed family member at knifepoint: KCKPD

SHAWNEE, Kan. — Kansas City, Kansas, police say a Shawnee police K-9 that was assisting during an overnight barricade/standoff call was stabbed and taken to a vet. KCKPD said officers responded to the call just east of 10th and Riverview at 3:45 a.m. Police said someone called 911 after a family member armed with a knife came back to the home following an assault. Expired temp tags about to be a thing of the past in Missouri Investigators said the suspect barricaded himself, leading to a standoff. Shawnee police sent K-9 Officer Dagger to help – but when officers tried to arrest the suspect, he stabbed the K-9. 'The K-9 handler actually saw the suspect; everything he observed, [it] appeared that he was not armed,' KCKPD Officer Thomas Tomasic told FOX4. 'So, they sent the dog in. When the dog approached, the dog was stabbed. [Officers] pulled the dog out, and that's when we set up an official barricade on the suspect.' KCKPD said the suspect surrendered at 7:30 a.m. and was arrested after robbing a family member. 'A family member had robbed another family member at knifepoint,' Tomasic said. 'The dog was wearing its protective gear, but it was stabbed in the neck area. So the vest would not have protected the dog from that.' Police said K-9 Officer Dagger was taken to a veterinary clinic and is expected to fully recover. A spokesperson for the police department said they're grateful Dagger is healing, and they appreciate all support and well wishes. : Dagger, Draco and Marx. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Thousands of volunteers still needed for FIFA World Cup 2026 in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As Kansas City prepares to host a handful of FIFA World Cup 2026 matches, thousands of volunteers are still needed to make it work. Although it's unpaid, organizers said it's an opportunity to give back and show off Kansas City. Shawnee police K-9 stabbed while assisting with standoff call 'We want to have over 15,000 signed up and we just got word yesterday that we have surpassed 10,000 sign-ups,' Lori Thomas, director of volunteers for KC2026, told FOX4 Tuesday. 'We need people from all different backgrounds, cultures, bilingual, etc. We are looking for anyone and everyone that just wants to be part of the Kansas City magic.' Thomas said volunteers are the heartbeat of the operation and midwestern hospitality is needed to welcome the 650,000 visitors that are expected to visit the Kansas City metro during the World Cup. 'We need people that are calm under pressure,' she added. 'We need people that are welcoming. We need people that can be in different scenarios.' Volunteers must be 18 years old. All applicants must speak English; additional languages are a plus, KC2026 said. If interested, the deadline to sign up is Sept. 15. You can sign up here. The process starts with registering and applying with FIFA, then an interview process follows in October. During the process, you can select your interest in certain areas to help match your experience with a specific role. Roles will be all over the community, including at the airport, within the stadium, for FIFA fan fest, hospitality, ticketing and more. 'We are going to interview over potentially 15,000 people, and they are going to come in [then] they are going to visit with interviewers for 30 minutes a piece,' Thomas said. 'So, we will go through that process for about 2-2.5 months.' Background checks, as well as role and venue-specific training, will follow. 'Then, the fun part is, you get to pick up your 10-piece uniform, which is an Adidas FIFA-branded uniform and pick up your accreditation,' Thomas said. She said the schedule commitment is eight-hour shifts, eight times. 'It's going to be over the span of 45 days, between June 1 and approximately July 18,' she said. Volunteer perks include the official uniform, exclusive reward items, meals during shift, a volunteer certificate, along with experiences and opportunities. The organization hopes to interview between 12,000 and 15,000 people to reach their goal of 6,300 volunteers. Staff said, if you are interested, go ahead and apply. Applying now does not constitute your commitment or guarantee an opportunity; there is a process in play from now until tournament time. Role offers and name-check verification begins in January and February of 2026. Shift confirmation is slated for March and April of 2026, then training. Accreditation is in May through June, then the event kicks off. You can watch the World Cup in Kansas City on FOX4 News. For all of our World Cup coverage, click here.
