Arapahoe Basin's Proposal To Build Two Gondolas Is Turning Heads
A surprising press release hit my inbox earlier this morning, May 16, 2025. The subject read, "A-Basin Master Development Plan", and the contents of the 122-page document that was attached had my head spinning. Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, the once independently-owned, expert-oriented haunt has big plans for expansion under new owner Alterra Mountain 122-page document covers a laundry list of subjects, but the lift expansions, upgrades, and new terrain will be of most interest to skiers and snowboarders. We'll dive a bit deeper later in the article, but here are the major proposals we've gleaned from A-Basin's ambitious Master Development Plan:1. Arapahoe Basin wants to build not one, but two gondolas in the near future. One gondola will serve the parking lots and replace the ski area's parking shuttle system. Another gondola will transport guests from the base area to base of the new beginner area.2. Construction of a new detachable chairlift called that will access a new beginner learning area called located adjacent to the current trail.3. Construction of a new groomed trail in .4. A new skier services hub to be constructed at the new beginner area.5. Optimization of current parking lots and construction of two new parking to keep up with the best stories and photos in skiing? Subscribe to the new Powder To The People newsletter for weekly updates. Arapahoe Basin has big ambitions in their Master Development Plan, but a spokesperson from the ski area clarified the intention of releasing the Plan as is. "The MDP offers us a path forward but does not guarantee anything. The idea behind MDPs is to provide the USFS with any potential project we would be interested in doing in the coming years to benefit the ski area in one big proposal," says Shayna Silverman of Arapahoe Basin. "If the USFS accepts this plan, then each project must go through NEPA. If projects are accepted by the USFS and approved by NEPA, only then it's up to us on what projects we move forward with and when."Along with the highlighted proposals listed above, Arapahoe Basin wants to increase its snowmaking capacity by 65 acres. Bolstering snowmaking capabilities in Montezuma Bowl, on the Loafer and Davis runs in The Beavers, and on the Humbug, West Gully, Upper Wrangler, Shooting Gallery, and Grizzly Road runs on the frontside of the mountain. Snowmaking will also be constructed for the new Sawmill Flats beginner Master Development Plan also mentions installing remote avalanche systems along the East Wall and within Montezuma Bowl. These devices would replace the mountain's current avalauncher systems that resemble military will continue to keep tabs on Arapahoe Basin's Master Development Plan as progress is made. At this point, there is no stated timeframe for when the new lifts, runs, or snowmaking will be constructed. We will keep you updated if and when those timeframes are disclosed.

Only one Colorado ski resort will remain open beyond May 18
Summer skiing? Not quite, but with unusually warm spring temperatures, it might seem that way for those still trying to get a few more laps in before stowing that snowboard or those skis for the summer. Only one Colorado ski resort — Arapahoe Basin — will remain open beyond May 18, the final day of operations this year for Winter Park on the Mary Jane side of its resort. A-Basin is hosting its annual 'Gay Basin Pride Weekend' to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community May 17-18 and plans to remain open well past that, likely into mid-June, spokesperson Shayna Silverman told the Coloradoan via email. 'We will ski and ride as Mother Nature allows,' Silverman said, noting that the resort remained open through June 16 in 2024. Operating hours for Arapahoe Basin and Winter Park are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Discounted daily lift tickets are available at both Arapahoe Basin and Winter Park, with additional discounts for online sales. Which Colorado ski resorts are still open? Just a few, even after recent snow
Nearly a foot of new snow fell at one Colorado ski area May 6-7, and another picked up 6 inches, adding a fresh layer of snow for those final runs of the season for skiers and snowboarders who aren't yet ready to put their gear away for the summer. There are only a handful of ski resorts still open in Colorado, and three of those — Breckenridge, Copper Mountain and Loveland — are shutting down for the season May 11. That will leave just two resorts open into mid-May and beyond — Arapahoe Basin and the Mary Jane side at Winter Park. Spokespeople for each of those resorts have said they will remain open this spring for as long as conditions permit. Loveland Ski Area Loveland Ski Area was reporting 11 inches of new snow in the previous 24 hours at 8 a.m. May 7 and 15 inches in the previous 48 hours and a mid-mountain snow depth of 66 inches. The resort, which will close for the season May 11, had seven of its 10 lifts running and 85 of 94 trails open, according to its daily online report. More: Will it be cool or hot in Colorado this summer? Here's what weather experts are predicting Winter Park Winter Park, where four lifts on the Mary Jane side of the resort were still open, was reporting 6 inches of new snow in the previous 24 hours at 8 a.m. May 7 and 7 inches in the previous 48 hours. Mid-mountain snow depth was 53 inches. Arapahoe Basin Arapahoe Basin, which remained open into June last year, was reporting 4 inches of snow in the preivous 24 hours, 7 inches in the previous 48 hours and a mid-mountain snow depth of 63 inches at 8 a.m. May 7. All nine of its lifts were still operating, and the majority of its terrain remained open. The resort is planning its annual "Gay Basin Pride Weekend" on May 17-18, with daily parades from the summit to Black Mountain Lodge, live music and an afterparty with a limited release beer at 5 p.m. Saturday at Outer Basin in Frisco, according to a news release from spokesperson Shayna Silverman. No closing date for the 2024-25 season has yet been announced. Breckenridge Breckenridge was reporting 1 inch of new snow in the previous 24 hours and 6 inches in the previous seven days as of 8 a.m. May 7 with a 58-inch mid-mountain snow depth. Five of its 35 lifts were operating, and 79 of 192 runs were open. Copper Mountain Copper Mountain reported an overnight 'dusting of snow' as of 5 a.m. May 7 but no measurable accumulation in the previous 24 hours and a mid-mountain snow depth of 45 inches. Four of its 23 lifts were operating and 54 of 157 runs, all rated intermediate, advanced or expert-only, were open. All of its beginner terrain has closed for the season.
