Tom Hanks to Star in ‘This World of Tomorrow' Play, Which He Wrote, This Fall

Tom Hanks will wear many hats this fall when he stars in a new off-Broadway play, This World of Tomorrow, based on his own short stories via a script he co-wrote with playwright James Glossman. Kenny Leon, who directed the production of Othello starring Denzel Washington and a recent revival of Our Town, will also direct. The plot centers on Bert Allenberry (Hanks' character), a time-traveling scientist from the future visiting the 1939 World's Fair in Queens in search of true love. Allenberry makes the trip through time again and again in the play, which will get its world premiere at the New York City venue, the Shed. Previews begin Oct. 30 and the production will run through Dec. 21. Tickets go on sale July 24. 'It will be a joy to experience Tom leading the cast on stage in this time-traveling adventure of the limitless power of love and the distance one is willing to go for it,' Leon said. 'This story explores a fascinating tale of the echoes of past generations, the often-surprising collisions between them, and what is carried forward with an authentic humor I can't wait to bring to life in the [Shed's] Griffin Theater.' Hanks last took the stage a little over a decade ago in Lucky Guy, a play written by Nora Ephron (who directed Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail). Hanks' performance in that play garnered Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critics Circle, and Tony Award nominations. Tom Hanks returning to the stage in new Off-Broadway production

Tom Hanks is to star in an off-Broadway play he has co-written. The Oscar-winning star will be making a return to the stage for the first time since his 2013 Broadway debut in 'Lucky Guy' - for which he was nominated for a Tony Award - when he appears in 'This World of Tomorrow' at the 550-seat theatre The Shed in New York City. The production will premiere on 30 October and run for eight weeks until 21 December, and is described as a blend of romance and history with a dash of science fiction. The story follows a lonely scientist from the future who travels back in time to find love at the 1939 World's Fair in Queens and will feature a cast of 10 to 12 actors, with some taking on multiple roles. The 'Forrest Gump' actor said in a statement: "To explore the themes of love and yearning, and the struggles of Today as we carry with us the eternal memories of the Past, in such a place as The Shed, strikes me as a one-of-a-kind experience not unlike the World's Fair of 1939." Tom has been working with The Shed to develop the play over the last year and he co-wrote 'This World of Tomorrow' with James Glossman, his collaborator on 2022's stage piece 'Safe Home', which was also based on stories from the 'Elvis' star's 2017 book 'Uncommon Type'. Kenny Leon will direct the production and is "excited" to work with the writers. He said in his own statement: "I'm excited to collaborate with the remarkable Tom Hanks on his and James Glossman's new play at The Shed this fall. "It will be a joy to experience Tom leading the cast on stage in this time-traveling adventure of the limitless power of love and the distance one is willing to go for it. "This story explores a fascinating tale of the echoes of past generations, the often-surprising collisions between them, and what is carried forward with an authentic humour I can't wait to bring to life in the Griffin Theater." Tickets for 'This World of Tomorrow' go on sale 24 July, with a Shed member presale from 15 July.

Gloucester batter Exeter in record-breaking West Country derby victory

Premiership punishment beatings do not come much heavier than this record-breaking West Country derby annihilation. There was absolutely nowhere for Exeter to hide on this bright but brutal Sunday in Gloucestershire as a rampant home side rattled up 13 tries to revitalise their ambitions of making the playoffs and inflict the heaviest defeat in the Chiefs' top-division history. It would have been a proper cricket score had the Cherry and Whites not missed half a dozen conversions and it was all but inevitable from an early stage that the Chiefs'previous widest losing margin of 43 points would be blown away. Being booed by the Shed is one thing, hearing laughter ring around the ground is another level of embarrassment. The club's chair, Tony Rowe, could been seen laying down the line in the Chiefs' dressing room after the game, clearly stung by this non-performance from a team theoretically building for next season. 'That was my worst day as a coach,' said the head coach, Rob Hunter, part of the backroom staff who helped Exeter win the European and domestic double just five years ago. 'It's in no way acceptable for us to perform like that and we haven't tried to hide away from that in the changing-room. 'Tony's entirely entitled to come in and fire in to everybody. He's put a lot of time and effort into the club and everyone's expectations should be way, way higher than that. Fair play to Gloucester but we gifted them momentum at almost every opportunity.' While last week's defeat at Saracens put a slight dent in the Cherry and Whites top-four aspirations, no one will be in a rush to face George Skivington's side on this kind of form. With three games still to play – away to Quins and Newcastle and at home to Northampton – they currently sit one point behind fourth-placed Bristol and two points ahead of sixth-placed Saracens. In addition to the outstanding Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams and the deadly duo of Jack Singleton and Seb Atkinson, who contributed five tries between them, the watching England head coach Steve Borthwick will also have taken due note of several hard-working English-qualified forwards who must be pushing hard for loftier recognition. Hooker Seb Blake has been a handful all season while backrowers Jack Clement and Lewis Ludlow and prop Afo Fasogbon also caught the eye in a vibrant team performance. To say nothing went right for the Chiefs would be to put it politely. They had apparently enjoyed an upbeat training week but any semblance of confidence was eviscerated by six Cherry and White tries inside the first half hour. Two powerful driven mauls brought scores for Jack Clement and Seb Blake before the floodgates truly opened and some extravagant offloading delivered a smashing try for a delighted Lewis Ludlow. The Shed was soon purring again in the sunshine as Chris Harris, Seb Atkinson and Gareth Anscombe added further tries to extend the margin to 36-0. Exeter did belatedly string together a few attacking phases in the opposing 22, which allowed Josh Hodge to put his side on the board, but the slickness of Gloucester's handling, the inability of Chiefs to slow the ball down and some ineffectual tackling all combined to ensure a lopsided contest. Sign up to The Breakdown The latest rugby union news and analysis, plus all the week's action reviewed after newsletter promotion Perhaps the most outrageous assist of the lot was a 30-yard pass over the top from Williams to his left wing, Jake Morris, which sailed over the heads of multiple opponents and ended with Santiago Carreras sending Williams himself over. Gloucester are not perfect but their attack coach James Lightfoot-Brown has clearly been doing some excellent work. It was much the same story after the interval as Jamal Ford-Robinson and Christian Wade, via Carreras's unselfish assist, brought up Gloucester's half-century inside 50 minutes. Wade is off to play rugby league in Wigan where he will find life a whole lot tougher. Even the massed cavalry off the bench made little difference for the visitors, the defence melting away faster than left-over Easter eggs in the sun to permit a second try for Atkinson and more easy pickings for Singleton who collected a hat-trick of tries inside 12 minutes. Even the most exhausted London Marathon runners will feel less shattered than the Chiefs when they limp back to work this week. 'The reality is that good vibes are not enough,' stressed Hunter. 'We definitely went a little bit missing. Not having a game next week is probably a good thing for us. We're not going to brush past this.'

A Mississippi church deacon was fatally shot while trying to protect people from a dispute that broke out during an Easter egg hunt hosted by his church, witnesses and law enforcement said. Empowerment Ministries Christian Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, identified the deacon as Eddie Shed and said he died on April 12 while trying to "save others from harm" at the church's Easter egg hunt at Jack and Florence Goldin Park in Gulfport. The Gulfport Police Department said the shooting stemmed from a "child custody dispute" and that two people who tried to "deescalate the fight" were hit by gunfire, as well as the suspect. Shed was pronounced dead at the scene and another person was airlifted to an out-of-state hospital. The following day, police arrested Tyran Deion Gable, 24, of Saucier, Mississippi, on charges of murder and aggravated assault, according to the Gulfport Police Department. Gable was hit by gunfire during the shooting and was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said. In a statement posted to social media, the church said Shed was killed "in a senseless act of gun violence." "Deacon Shed epitomized the virtues of a hero, displaying selfless courage and bravery that ultimately saved others from harm," said the statement from Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, which describes itself as non-denominational. "He paid the ultimate price for his valor, and we are deeply saddened by this loss." Deacon was 'a hero,' witnesses say Witnesses of the shooting said Shed didn't hesitate to protect children at the Easter egg hunt. 'I wouldn't expect nothing less from him to do something like that, nothing less. He was just a hero,' longtime church member Shatondria Ball told WLOX. 'He died a hero doing what he does best, and that's protecting and that's loving and that's looking out for everyone,' fellow church member Alexis Weathersby told the outlet. 'He was just a wonderful man that was willing to do any and everything for anyone.' Gregg S. Magee, senior pastor of Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, described Shed in a statement as "a pillar of strength within our community and a beacon of light and hope." "His unwavering faith, kindness, and dedication to serving others have left an indelible mark on all who knew him," the pastor said. Shed is survived by his wife and three children. A GoFundMe for his family has raised nearly $16,000 as of April 15.

Deacon Eddie Shed Dies Protecting Others From Shots At Easter Egg Hunt

Mississippi deacon Eddie Shed died a hero on Saturday (April 12) after an Easter egg hunt was terrorized by gunfire. WLOX reports that 24-year-old Tyran Deion Gable got into a heated argument with the mother of his child at the gathering hosted by Empowerment Ministries Christian Center (EMCC). Witnesses say Gable then shot two people who were attempting to deescalate the situation. One of those people was airlifted to a hospital in Mobile, Alabama. The other was Deacon Shed, who had also served as head of security for the host church. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 'He died a hero doing what he does best, and that's protecting and that's loving and that's looking out for everyone,' clergy member Alexis Weathersby told the outlet when speaking on Shed. 'He was just a wonderful man that was willing to do any and everything for anyone.' Shed was protecting the children when the gunfire erupted. EMCC Senior Pastor, Dr. Gregg S. Magee, Sr., issued a statement on Facebook on behalf of the church about the incident and Shed's death. 'It is with heavy hearts that we, the Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, address the tragic events that unfolded during our Family Easter Egg Hunt at Prudie Circle Earlier today. Our beloved Deacon Eddie Shed was taken from us in a senseless act of gun violence,' it read. Magee continued, 'Deacon Shed epitomized the virtues of a hero, displaying selfless courage and bravery that ultimately saved others from harm. He paid the ultimate price for his valor, and we are deeply saddened by this loss.' He was described as 'a pillar of strength within our community and a beacon of light and hope,' noting that 'his unwavering faith, kindness, and dedication to serving others have left an indelible mark onall who knew him.' His family has started a GoFundMe to raise money for his wife, Doris, their three children and any financial burdens that may incur. Gable, who was also shot and injured, has been arrested and charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault. He was not granted bond for the murder charge. However, the judge did set a $250,000 bond for the aggravated assault charge. The Gulfport Police Department is urging anyone with information about the shooting to call them at 228-868-5959 or Crime Stoppers at 877-787-5898.
