Tom Hanks to Star in ‘This World of Tomorrow' Play, Which He Wrote, This Fall
Tom Hanks will wear many hats this fall when he stars in a new off-Broadway play, This World of Tomorrow, based on his own short stories via a script he co-wrote with playwright James Glossman. Kenny Leon, who directed the production of Othello starring Denzel Washington and a recent revival of Our Town, will also direct.
The plot centers on Bert Allenberry (Hanks' character), a time-traveling scientist from the future visiting the 1939 World's Fair in Queens in search of true love. Allenberry makes the trip through time again and again in the play, which will get its world premiere at the New York City venue, the Shed. Previews begin Oct. 30 and the production will run through Dec. 21. Tickets go on sale July 24.

'To explore the themes of love and yearning, and the struggles of Today as we carry with us the eternal memories of the Past, in such a place as The Shed, strikes me as a one-of-a-kind experience, not unlike the World's Fair of 1939,' Hanks said in a statement.
'It will be a joy to experience Tom leading the cast on stage in this time-traveling adventure of the limitless power of love and the distance one is willing to go for it,' Leon said. 'This story explores a fascinating tale of the echoes of past generations, the often-surprising collisions between them, and what is carried forward with an authentic humor I can't wait to bring to life in the [Shed's] Griffin Theater.'
Hanks last took the stage a little over a decade ago in Lucky Guy, a play written by Nora Ephron (who directed Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail). Hanks' performance in that play garnered Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critics Circle, and Tony Award nominations.

You won't believe what Wilson from Cast Away looks like today
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Wilson surely remains the most famous volleyball in Hollywood. Yet, in the incredible 25 years that have passed since he made his big screen splash as supporting actor to Tom Hanks in 2000's Cast Away, he's yet to get another major role. These days, AI can make Tom Hanks look any age (see our piece on Tom Hanks' de-aging in Here). But what would Wilson look like? A sobering new campaign shows us. The Odyssey of Wilson campaign mixes immersive website design, a short film, public installations in coastal cities and live activations during sports broadcasts. With the agency Africa Creative helming creative development, it was created by the Onda Azul Institute with telecoms company Vivo to promote UNESCO's new scientific frameworks ahead of the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice. Wilson's imagined path through the world's oceans is used as a metaphor for the long-term degradation caused by plastics, bringing real datasets to life in a devastating interactive journey that covers 450 years of environmental change – the time it will take for Wilson to decay. The experience traces currents, tides, and climate events to visualise the famous volleyball's transformation into microplastics, taking in ecological disasters like acidification, ice shelf collapse and rising sea levels along the way. Scientific data can often be dry and off-putting, but in Wilson's story, Africa Creative have found a clever device to transform complex data into a story that resonates emotionally. 'This project is about making science human,' says André Luis Esteves, director at the Rio de Janeiro-based Onda Azul Institute. 'By following the journey of a simple object, we illustrate decades of invisible damage caused by plastic waste – and why it urgently needs global attention. With Vivo and inspired by UNESCO's scientific leadership, we've transformed data into a story people can feel.''Science alone doesn't move people – stories do," adds Raphael Vandystadt, VP of Sustainability at Africa Creative. "By turning complex data into a powerful visual journey, we help make the invisible visible. Communication plays a strategic role in mobilizing collective action for our oceans ahead of the UN Ocean Conference.' Add some effective interactive web design, and the campaign becomes an engaging experience and a powerful call to action aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. Tom Hanks And Bryan Cranston Make Headlines After Telling Off Photographers
and proved they're still Hollywood's most lovable (and unpredictable) gentlemen as they hit the red carpet for the premiere of "The Phoenician Scheme" on Wednesday night, and they didn't hold back when it came to keeping the photographers on their toes. The "Forrest Gump" star was all smiles as he posed for a movie studio photographer, but when other cameramen began teasing the snapper for taking too long, Tom Hanks jumped in with his signature charm and a little spice. 'I want to be right where [the other photographers are],' Hanks exclaimed while jokingly gesturing to move down the line. Then, with a mischievous grin, he shouted at one cameraman to 'shut the f-ck up,' sending the entire media line into a fit of laughter. The video was first obtained by Page Six. Not to be outdone, "Breaking Bad" alum Bryan Cranston joined in the fun after someone pointed out his tie was slightly crooked. 'My tie is askew!' he declared in mock horror before turning his attention to the photographers. 'Thanks for letting me know my tie was askew,' he deadpanned, before proudly announcing, 'I'm going to come out with a line of ties called Askew!' Talk about turning a moment into a marketing pitch. The lighthearted exchange offered a refreshing glimpse of both stars' comedic timing and quick wit, something fans have come to expect from Hanks, who has made headlines in the past for both hilarious antics and fiercely protective moments. Back in November 2024, Hanks and his wife, , made waves after they 'stormed out' of the "Saturday Night Live" 50th anniversary concert in a scripted bit that had the audience in stitches. The moment was part of a larger joke by host , who told the crowd there would be no awards given that night. Cameras captured Tom and Rita making a dramatic (and perfectly timed) exit as Fallon called out, 'We lost Tom Hanks and Rita. Sorry. It wasn't their fault.' But while Hanks often leans into humor, he's also shown he's not afraid to stand up when it matters. Back in June 2022, the "Elvis" star made headlines after a tense encounter with fans turned chaotic outside a restaurant in Midtown Manhattan. Hanks and his wife were leaving a dinner engagement and heading to their car when a swarm of fans and paparazzi surrounded them on the sidewalk, hoping to snap selfies and get autographs. In video footage that quickly went viral, the couple is seen attempting to move through the crowd with the help of a security guard. But as the group pressed in, Wilson suddenly stumbled after being accidentally pushed by someone in the crowd. Visibly shaken, she turned and firmly said, 'Stop it.' That was enough for Hanks to go into full protective mode. 'Back the f-ck off!' the actor shouted, turning toward the group with his arms out. 'Knocking over my wife?!' His outburst left the crowd stunned, with some immediately backing away and apologizing. 'Sorry about that, Tom,' one fan is heard saying in the video. Though the moment was brief, it served as a reminder that even the most composed stars can, and should, speak up when boundaries are crossed. Many fans praised Hanks for defending Wilson and not tolerating what could have become a dangerous situation. Hanks and Cranston weren't the only A-listers turning heads at the "Phoenician Scheme" screening at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, , , Steve Park, and Hope Davis also stepped out in style, joining director Wes Anderson for the star-studded event. The film, Anderson's latest quirky ensemble, centers on wealthy businessman Zsa-zsa Korda (del Toro) and his daughter, a nun (Threapleton), as they dive into a chaotic new venture involving eccentric tycoons, relentless assassins, and charming revolutionaries. Though they didn't hit the carpet, "Phoenician Scheme" also features appearances by and , rounding out one of the director's most stacked casts yet.

Broadway Box Office Has Finally Recovered, Overtaking Pre-Pandemic Returns for First Time
Last week, Broadway grosses for the season-to-date surpassed 2018-2019's record season-to-date box office for the first time. Total industry box office hit $1.8 billion for the season, propelled by hits such as Good Night, and Good Luck, starring George Clooney, which was last week's highest earner, with $3.8 million, followed by Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, with $3.2 million and Glengarry Glen Ross, starring Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr, with $2.4 million. More from The Hollywood Reporter Cynthia Erivo to Star in One-Woman Version of 'Dracula' in London Tom Francis Is Ready to Flex His Muscles for Hollywood Nicole Scherzinger on How Her "Pop Star Mentality" Prepared Her for 'Sunset Blvd.,' "Manifesting" a Film Adaptation and First Tony Nom Good Night, and Good Luck and Glengarry Glen Ross both announced that they had recouped their capitalizations, with Glengarry Glen Ross breaking the Palace Theatre box office record with a gross of $2.4 million. Some shows also appeared to get a boost from the Tony nominations, including Death Becomes Her, which saw its grosses shoot up close to $270,000 from the prior week to $1.3 million, Buena Vista Social Club, which saw a close to $90,000 gain to $1.2 million, Maybe Happy Ending, which shot up close to $100,000 to $1 million. All three tied for having the most Tony nominations. Among the plays, Purpose, which is Tony nominated and was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Drama, saw its grosses increase by about $100,000 to $522,691 last week, and the Tony-nominated play John Proctor is The Villain, starring Sadie Sink, also increased close to $100,000 to $596,511. The milestone of surpassing the 2018-2019 season is significant as that season is the highest on record for Broadway grosses and attendance and has been viewed as a benchmark to measure post-pandemic recovery. At this point in the 2018-2019 season, Broadway had brought in $1.79 million. However, Jason Laks, president of the Broadway League noted that the numbers are driven by a few productions – namely the recent celebrity-driven titles, with high ticket prices – and that otherwise the economics of Broadway are making it harder for productions to survive. Othello commanded the highest average ticket price on Broadway last week at $387. 'Broadway audiences are responding to the remarkable and diverse slate of productions this season. These grosses and attendance numbers are a testament to, and a reflection of, the efforts of every person working both on stage and off to turn the dream of each show into a reality,' Laks said in a statement. 'While we celebrate this milestone, we also need to be clear-eyed about where this industry stands today. Among other factors, these record grosses have been buoyed by the tremendous success of a few specific productions this season, without which we would still trail our pre-pandemic numbers. While we are, of course, thrilled by their successes, we also have to look at our industry as a whole,' the statement reads. 'Every show, no matter how acclaimed, is grappling with rising costs across every facet of production. Shows have an ever-shorter window to get on their feet, find an audience, and determine their future. This is a major challenge shows face as they seek out investors, without which a production will never make it to the stage,' Laks said.
