Opposition in Ahmedabad civic body slams new proposals to lay white-topped roads

Ahmedabad: The road and building committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will present three proposals to lay white-topped roads in various areas of the city, including Nava Vadaj, Chandkheda, Sabarmati, Vasna, and Navrangpura, on Wednesday. However, the opposition has raised objections to these proposals, two of which are single tenders. There is opposition to awarding all three projects to a single company and paying Rs 37.62 crore more than the estimated cost. Shehzad Khan Pathan, the leader of the opposition in the AMC, said, "Three separate proposals for white topping the roads in city's western areas is on the meeting agenda. One proposal suggests awarding all three projects to a single company at 26% to 31.50% rates higher than the estimated cost. The estimated cost for these three projects was set at Rs 129.86 crore, but it was decided to award them at Rs 167.48 crore — an increase of Rs 37.62 crore. We demand that these proposals be cancelled and re-tendered. In the past 10 years, AMC has not constructed a single quality road in the city. Roads get damaged during monsoon, causing inconvenience to citizens." ‘AMC got 4.8L streetlight complaints in 5 years'

Ahmedabad: Despite the installation of 35,192 new streetlight poles at a cost of Rs 119.48 crore over the past five years, complaints regarding non-functional streetlights are on the rise in Ahmedabad. Shehzad Khan Pathan, leader of opposition in the AMC, highlighted that the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) received 4,78,072 online complaints about streetlights being out during this period, averaging nearly 8,000 complaints monthly. Pathan pointed out that the maintenance contract for the city's 2.13 lakh light poles that were outsourced to a private company expired four months ago, and new tenders have not been finalised. "This lack of maintenance is causing a surge in complaints and creating a risk of accidents due to darkness on main roads," he added. Complaint numbers have steadily increased across all zones in the past five years, with the South Zone recording the highest at 1,02,411, followed by the West Zone (94,853), North Zone (66,771), Central Zone (59,991), East Zone (58,312) North West Zone (57,526) and South West Zone (38,206). Pathan urged immediate action to address the growing issue.
