NYSEG supports Hornet Hope Center

BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – NYSEG is ensuring SUNY Broome students have access to food and other necessary items with its latest company wide initiative. NYSEG recenty held a food drive for SUNY Broome's Hornet Hope Center. Employees donated 782 pounds of food, the pantry's largest ever donation. The Hornet Hope Center was established last year and feeds students in need. It offers non-perishable items, frozen foods, and refrigerated foods. It is also home to a clothing closet. Director of Communications for NYSEG Shelby Cohen says one of the reasons the company chose the pantry is because of its partnership with the school through the Line Worker Training Program. Cohen says employees were excited to participate in the food drive because they could be potentially feeding their future coworkers. 'Food insecurity is really common amongst college kids and when you're learning and in a learning environment, it's one of the most important times to have good nutrition and to not be hungry because you need your brain to work for those functions,' she said. According to SUNY Broome, donations had decreased while use of the pantry has increased. The Hornet Hope Center is located on campus in the Science Building, thanks to a 100 thousand dollar donation from NYSEG's parent company Avangrid.
