Local health department reminds you the importance of sunscreen during summer months

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — With summer nearing, the Vigo County Health Department wants to remind the community the importance of taking care of your skin, especially during the summer months. UV radiation is generally the strongest during the spring and summer months, specifically between April and August. As you spend more time outside, it is important to protect your eyes and skin from UV radiation. For example, using sunscreen and reapplying is key. 'Just as important it is to initially use sunscreen, is also the reapplication of sunscreen every two hours,' said Shelby Jackson with the Vigo County Health Department. 'That's the critical point. You don't want to forget reapplication of sunscreen.' The effects from UV radiation can include sunburns, types of skin cancer, eye damage and immune system suppression. Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer across the United States. If you have any questions or concerns can contact the Vigo County Health Department anytime. Recent changes made to the Indiana Retail Food Code

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A local health department is educating restaurants and retail food establishments of recent changes to the Indiana Retail Food Code. The changes consist of five categories: definitions, employee health and hygiene, food, equipment and facility requirements, and compliance and enforcement. Vigo County Health Department Public Health Educator Shelby Jackson said some examples of definition changes include adding cut tomatoes and leafy greens to Time Temperature Control foods, and adding sesame to the food allergen list. Also, she said violations are now considered in or out of compliance. 'Every retail food establishment will get a letter mailed out to them with these changes listed,' said Jackson. 'Now, this is not a full list. These are mainly those key points that we see within our community.' Jackson said the changes went into effect on April 16 and will be enforced January 1, 2026, giving restaurants and retail food establishments time to give familiar with the changes. Preventing from tick-borne illnesses

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Health officials are warning Hoosiers to beware of ticks. This is after the Indiana Department of Health reported a fatal case of the tick-borne illness Ehrlichiosis in Southern Indiana. Here locally, the Vigo County Health Department is sharing some tips to stay safe. Health Educator Shelby Jackson said ticks are active from early spring to late fall, and they're not limited to dense wooded areas, they can also be found in grassy areas. Jackson said people can spray themselves with a tick repellent if they are spending time outdoors. Then once you go back inside, she said it's important to check your skin and clothing for ticks. 'When you're removing a tick, it's important that you use some tweezers and you want to get the whole body of the tick and also the head. So, take the tweezers all the way down to the skin and fully grasp the tick and pull up. You don't want to pull at an angle or anywhere that could potentially break the head of the tick off from the body,' said Jackson. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Local health official discusses measles prevention

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Vigo County Health Department says prevention is key when it comes to protection from measles. The Indiana Department of Health on Monday announced the first confirmed case of measles in Indiana this year. The IDOH says the case is an unvaccinated minor in Allen County. Measles case confirmed in Allen County Vigo County Health Department Public Health Educator Shelby Jackson says the best way to prevent measles is with the MMR vaccine. According to the IDOH, more than 93% of people who receive a single dose of MMR will develop immunity to measles and more than 97% will be protected after receiving a second dose. Jackson says measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease spread by air droplets. 'If someone coughs or sneezes in a room like this, it can actually stay in here for up to 2 hours. That's why it's super important to be aware of your symptoms and if you have any symptoms or any rashes present to call your doctor, but to make sure you isolate and stay out of the community, so that way we don't further the spread,' says Jackson. Jackson says symptoms of measles are high fever, rash, red watery eyes, a cough and a runny nose. She added tiny white spots may appear inside the mouth two to three days after symptoms begin.
