Las Vegas City Council's thoughts on Cashman's future
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The fate of a historic Las Vegas stadium will soon be decided by the city council, and elected officials have already revealed their vision for the site. According to the City of Las Vegas LinkedIn page, national homebuilder Lennar, registered as Greystone LLC, had the highest of the two bids submitted. The city has been trying to find a buyer to redevelop the 50-acre parcel and surrounding buildings in the downtown area. This was the second attempt to auction the property. There were no bidders in the first attempt. In May 2024, two Las Vegas Council members, and one candidate now mayor, revealed their concept for Cashman Center. 'My vision for Cashman is to build a medical complex, a hospital, a children's hospital which I think it sorely needed,' Shelley Berkley, then-candidate now Las Vegas mayor, said. 'We could develop an entire area and make it the envy of the rest of the country, that is my vision for Cashman.' Las Vegas City Councilwoman Victoria Seaman indicated her hope for a children's hospital, pointing to her own family's need. 'I am hoping for a children's hospital, because I have been advocating for one for five years. My daughter was born with a severe Laryngeal Web,' she said. 'And luckily at the time, which was 30 years ago, I was in Los Angeles and so there was a children's hospital.' Cedric Crear, now a former Las Vegas city councilman, oversaw the ward which encompasses the stadium. He mentioned the medical, economic, and even entertainment opportunities for the site. 'Nobody knows this but we have Usher inside Cashman working on all of his Super Bowl showdown at Cashman,' he said. 'We are utilizing it but we are working towards something with it, I'm really excited for it.' A Lennar spokesperson responded to an 8 News Now request and said the company did not have a comment regarding the site at this time. City Council members will vote on March 19 on whether to accept the high bidder or reject all bids. There was no information on what Lennar plans to do with the site. Under the auction terms, 'the city and Lennar will negotiate a purchase and sale agreement, including a timeline to secure land use entitlements and a closing date,' according to the city. Las Vegas mayor bullish on chances for Cashman sale
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley said she expects a second attempt to auction Cashman Field and the surrounding buildings to net a buyer who will develop the 50-acre parcel into 'a building there that is going to be very beneficial to the city.' Berkley, at her first news conference since taking office late last year, said she is fielding offers ranging from sports venues to industrial use. But nobody bid at the city's first auction of the Cashman land last November. At Berkley's own admission, the terms of that sale requiring a bidder to purchase the land before the city reviewed its application, made the process too restrictive and a 'little bit onerous.' Berkley ran her mayoral campaign, among other things, on her plan to rid the city of the $636 million albatross in the wake of the notorious Badlands golf course litigation. Selling the Cashman land, she has said, is part of that plan. But describing the flaws in the prior auction process, Berkley said, 'You buy it, you pay us, and then we'll decide later if we're going to like your project.' The mayor said the city council agreed to change the regulations so a successful bidder would 'have a pretty good idea if that would be accepted by the city council.' But Las Vegas resident Tera Anderson, vice president of a national real estate development firm who said the first auction's terms were 'far too limiting,' told the 8 News Now Investigators the city needs to loosen those restrictions and make sure it has a plan worthy of the desirable real estate. 'I think the path that they're on is fraught with tremendous risk to the city and not maximizing the opportunity that is this site,' Anderson said Friday. She said the Cashman land is irreplaceable if, for no other reason, 50 Acres in downtown Las Vegas don't come up for sale very often. Done correctly a development could lead to tremendous growth downtown. If not, she said, it could end up sitting vacant for another mayor, in office for some 10 weeks, said the property had recently increased in value by a couple of million dollars. The city has attempted to redevelop and revitalize the area since it acquired the property in 2017. The 10,000-seat stadium has been home to various sporting events since the 1940s — from Major League Baseball to football games and political events. It also housed served as a mass vaccination site during the COVID pandemic. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Holocaust Remembrance Day observed at UNLV by community leaders
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Monday, January 27th, 2025 was International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp. To honor the victims and survivors of the Holocaust on Holocaust Remembrance Day, UNLV hosted an educational event on-campus featuring community leaders like Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley and Commissioner Michael Naft among others. This year's event also centered on a discussion to consider the significance of the Holocaust and Genocide today. UNLV history professor Gregory Brown is also the co-chair of UNLV's task force of Jewish Identity and Inclusion. Brown said he is proud to see the community engagement and collaboration with several organizations on such an important topic. 'This is a city that has had a vibrant community around Holocaust and genocide education and again that's something the university hasn't always been a part of because so many of us work in isolation,' Brown explained. 'We teach our classes, but to develop a program with colleagues with some around these very important questions is really where our focus is now. We're going to have a law professor speak with the students around research and also around the broad history of understanding the Holocaust and the history of genocide.' One of those organizations is the Nevada Center for Humanity. Heidi Straus is the president of the nonprofit and was instrumental in opening 'The Holocaust: Reconstructing Shattered Humanity' exhibit at the governor's office last month. The exhibit highlights the experiences of Jews and those who fought to protect those targeted in these acts of injustice. 'At the end of the day, we have to think about people and the humanity lost. We have to think about what man is capable of….incredible greatness but also incredible evil, ' Straus remarked. 'These were men, people, making choices to do certain acts. These were people and it's important to understand how it happened and how we got to this place. So we study the history and it goes back thousands of years to antisemitism unfortunately but the Holocaust was unique and it takes maybe a lifetime to understand it.' Local leaders agreed it is important to remember and study our past so we never repeat atrocities like this again in the future. Holocaust: Reconstruction Shattered Humanity exhibit is now open at the governor's office in Las Vegas. You can see the exhibit through a self-guided tour by appointment only.
