Second-degree murder charge laid in northwestern Ont. woman's death

(LinkedIn) A 26-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a Shuniah woman following an Ontario Provincial Police investigation. Shortly after 10:50 p.m. on Monday, officers responded to a residence on Blind Creek Drive, where they located 54-year-old Shelley Marconi deceased. Police said a suspect was taken into custody at the scene, but have not released any details on the cause of death. The accused, also from Shuniah, faces a charge of second-degree murder. He remains in custody following bail hearing on July 15 and is scheduled to appear in court again in Thunder Bay on July 18. Community will mourn longtime advocate Marconi served as the human resources manager for the Ontario Native Women's Association in Thunder Bay since 2019. She was described online by her peers as an advocate for the 2SLGBTQ+ and disabled communities and a champion of Indigenous culture. Investigation ongoing The investigation into the death is continuing with assistance from the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, OPP said in a news release Tuesday evening. CTV News has reached out to provincial police to determine if the post-mortem has been scheduled or if the victim and the accused knew each other, but those messages have not yet been returned. Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
