Opossum rescued from Mackinac Bridge after being spotted by driver
The Mackinac Bridge connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan, carrying commuters, tourists and, on occasion, furry animals such as an opossum crossing the bridge on May 29, the Mackinac County Sheriff's office confirmed. The opossum wandered onto the bridge Thursday evening and was spotted by a passing motorist, the post on social media said. "Thanks to the Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) staff and Deputy Davis from the Mackinac County Sheriff's Department, he was safely relocated to the south end of the bridge," the post on Facebook reads. According to Terminix, an opossum, often confused with a possum, does not have a furry tail and is found in North America. The latter, also marsupials, have furry tails and are found in Australia. They are shorter and have less pointed noses than their counterparts. More: That time a reader painted a picture of an opossum | Opinion Possums and opossums do have similarities however including: They're nocturnal. They're arboreal, tree-dwelling creatures. They're omnivorous. According to a report from the Port Huron Times Herald, opossums have expanded north throughout the state since the 20th century, establishing a presence in the lower Upper Peninsula and more recently moving into Ontario. Current bridge conditions can be found on the Mackinac Bridge Authorities website. Additionally when traveling in the in the Mackinac Straits area, motorist can listen to 530 AM or 1610 AM for updates. Travelers can check the Mackinac Bridge Cam online for updates. Cameras capture the administration building looking south, the dock in St. Ignace, looking south; Bridge View Park in St. Ignace, looking south; from Mackinaw City, looking north; and St. Ignace, along Interstate 75. Passenger car, van, motorcycle, station wagon, SUV, pickup, and school buses cost $2 per axle or $4 per vehicle, the Authority said. (A van is a two-axle, four-tire vehicle not primarily intended for carrying cargo or commercial goods.) Other vehicles are $5 per axle. Vehicles not meeting passenger vehicle characteristics include, but are not limited to, tractor-trailers, buses, motor homes and step or cube vans, the Authority said. All vehicles will be classified by the lead vehicle. Anything being towed will be charged the per axle rate of the lead vehicle with the exception of the motor home towing an auto; the towed auto will be charged at the auto rate. The Mackinac Bridge accepts cash, credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Frequent travelers can sign up for MacPass and obtain a transponder for their windshield. The Authority said 239,000 vehicles passed over the bridge in March 2024. In January 2025, 214,000 vehicles crossed the bridge. Bridge traffic in August 2024 topped 640,000 — the most vehicles since at least 2014. Jalen Williams is a trending reporter at the Detroit Free Press. Sheriff pleads the Fifth repeatedly over questions about mysterious death
BOWLING GREEN, Mo. – There's a deepening mystery about a Pike County, Missouri, death and alleged cover-up by law enforcement, which FOX 2 News has covered for months. It's now taken a dramatic turn, with the sheriff at the center of controversy refusing to answer questions under oath. It involves the death of Nathaniel Mueller, whose family continues searching for answers. The Bowling Green police chief has alleged a cover up by the sheriff's department. On March 14, 2025, he alleged, 'It is clear that the Pike County Sheriff's office knew the location of Mueller's body for a month prior to this discovery of his remains.' Mueller disappeared last December and was reportedly found dead in a pond on Feb. 28. 'Everything revolving around Nathanial. We are not going to stop,' Ashley Ashby, Nathanel's godmother, said. Ashby hoped to finally get answers in a recent deposition of Pike County Sheriff Stephen Korte. 'I wanna take the Fifth on this one,' Korte said, repeatedly declining to answer questions about Mueller. 'I'm going to take the Fifth on this, also,' he said to another question. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now The sheriff invoked his right even for basic questions posed by trial attorney Mark Pedroli, who asked at one point, 'Where was Nathaniel Mueller's body found?' Sheriff Korte again took the Fifth. Pedroli asked, 'Was Nathaniel Mueller murdered to your knowledge?' The sheriff looked at his attorney, then answers, 'I'll take the Fifth.' 'I'm very disturbed,' Ashby said after hearing about the sheriff's responses. 'We definitely don't understand why it's taken so long to get answers.' The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating, while the sheriff's major, who's accused in the cover up, remains on duty – one of the few questions Sheriff Korte would answer. Pedroli asked, 'Is [the major] under investigation by you?' 'No,' the Sheriff answered. Bowling Green's police chief outed that major, without mentioning him by name, in a March news conference. The chief's attorney, Chris Lozano, was there and added, 'I know there are going to be repercussions. We are ready for them.' Lozano also responded to this latest development, saying, 'The Fifth Amendment is a cornerstone of the judicial system, but when a non-defendant elected official takes the Fifth, it should give us all pause.' FOX 2 followed up with Sheriff Korte, who said it would be irresponsible to make any comments, even in a deposition about a case being investigated by highway patrol. Florida man arrested for shooting neighbor's cow
A Florida man was arrested last week for fatally shooting his neighbor's cow after previously expressing anger over livestock jumping his fence, according to authorities. Hung Trinh, 54, of North Fort Myers, Florida, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and grand theft of a commercial farm animal, the Lee County Sheriff's Office said in a May 14 Facebook post. Trinh shot the 2-year-old cow on the neighbor's property five times to its chest, gut and rear leg, authorities said. A veterinarian later determined that the cow needed to be euthanized, according to the sheriff's office. 'There will be accountability for taking your frustrations out on innocent animals, in this case, multiple felonies and jail time," Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said in a statement. "We know how much these animals mean to our farming community, and we will not tolerate these actions. I am proud of my Agriculture Unit for their immediate response and ability to make an arrest in this case." The calf's owner said that Trinh had previously expressed anger over his livestock jumping the fence and threatened to shoot the animals, according to the sheriff's office. The sheriff's office added that its detectives executed a search warrant and located the .22 caliber gun in a shed on Trinh's property. The Facebook post also included a video of authorities approaching the wounded calf before it succumbed to the injuries. The footage also showed Trinh's arrest. Trinh could not be reached for comment. According to a database for the Lee County Sheriff's office, he is currently in custody, and his bond was set for $100,000. He is set to appear in court on June 16. This article was originally published on
