Health Minister Ong Ye Kung's recent announcement that the authorities are working to list etomidate under the Misuse of Drugs Act is a long-overdue but necessary move (
1 in 3 vapes here laced with etomidate; MOH working with MHA to list it as illegal drug: Ong Ye Kung , July 20).
We must thank the families, loved ones, and former users who bravely shared their painful stories. Their voices – amplified by media and social platforms – have shed light on an issue that had gone unnoticed by many.
However, it is troubling that the move came only after a surge in misuse and public concern. Better late than never – but we must do better.
Going forward, I urge the authorities to form a multi-stakeholder task force to strengthen our early warning systems. This group should include recovering abusers, affected families, healthcare professionals, educators, and enforcement agencies.
Their combined insights can help us spot red flags early and respond faster. We may not be able to prevent every new threat, but we can certainly act before it spirals.
