Despite wet weather, thousands gather for day one of Boston Calling music festival

Boston Calling had a wet start to the weekend on Friday, but the rain did not stop people from smiling and enjoying the music. Tens of thousands of music fans are expected to attend the annual music festival this Memorial Day weekend. Country singer Luke Combs took to the stage Friday night, as well as Sheryl Crow and Megan Moroney, along with dozens of other artists set for Saturday and Sunday. 'I'm looking forward to seeing Luke Combs,' said Joe Mazzarella. 'He's my inspiration.' 'Tonight, it's T-Pain, tomorrow Fall Out Boy, Avril, All Time Low, it's our pre-teen emo years that we're reminiscing,' Kara Corslund said. The rainy and dreary weather is not fazing those who have been looking forward to this weekend for months. 'It's not too bad either, just a couple sprinkles,, not going to hurt nobody,' Charlie Bowe said. The music festival at Harvard's Athletic Center looks a lot different compared to last year. 'It was really fun, really hot the day that I went,' Allison Stacey said. 'A lot of people were passing out and stuff.' Organizers with Boston Calling added extra water stations throughout the venue, redesigned the stages to help with congestion, and also added an indoor arena. Meanwhile, the group TLC did not perform on Friday due to a medical issue. 'Any time that an artist needs to be like, 'hey, I can't do this for whatever reason', that's their choice, it stinks they're not here, but take care of yourself,' Corslund said. Fall Out Boy and Avril Lavigne are Saturday's headliners with the Dave Matthews Band on Sunday. perform This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available. Sheryl Crow Shares Empathetic New Single ‘I Know' for Mental Health Awareness Month

Sheryl Crow unfurled her new single 'I Know' on Friday (May 23) in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month. On the tender ballad, the nine-time Grammy winner lays out the importance of empathy and connection as she sings, 'But maybe I could hold your hand/ And count the teardrops as they flow/ And promise never to let go/ I see the struggle in your face/ The only thing that I can say/ Is I know/ I know/ I know how it feels,' over restrained guitars. More from Billboard Musicians Who Have Opened Up About Their Mental Health Struggles U2's Bono Calls for Hamas to 'Release the Hostages, Stop the War' During Ivor Novello Awards Speech Rob49 on Viral Stardom, 'Let Me Fly,' Collab Album With G Herbo & Making Music With Justin Bieber The singer-songwriter, who recently served as a Mega Mentor on the just-concluded season 27 of The Voice, also opened up about the inspiration behind the song in a social media post on Wednesday (May 23). 'In a recent moment when I was really struggling, I picked up my guitar and wrote a song… Sometimes when we're struggling, just knowing that another soul can relate to what we're feeling makes things a little bit better. That's what this song is about,' she wrote. Elsewhere in the caption, she championed the mission of mental health nonprofit organization To Write Love on Her Arms, which provides resources in order for people struggling with their mental health to find affordable resources such as therapy. 'And this I REALLY love: they have a 'Disconnect to Reconnect' challenge which encourages people to get off social media for two weeks and reconnect to what matters most,' Crow continued. 'Social media isn't really great for anyone's emotional well-being, so encouraging folks to [put] the phone down and enjoy nature, family and friends, music….I do that all the time, and I know how beneficial it is to take a break.' VCU set to turn Siegel Center into city's largest indoor concert venue

VCU will soon start hosting concerts and other ticketed events at the Siegel Center to help raise money to pay its student athletes, the Times-Dispatch reports. Why it matters: The move would make the Stu, by far, Richmond's largest indoor concert venue. The big picture: Last spring, the NCAA and its five power conferences voted to let schools pay athletes directly. The challenge for schools was finding the money to pay them, which VCU estimates will cost around $5 million a year, per the RTD. With an estimated 30 events a year at the Siegel Center, including concerts, private events and family shows, VCU estimates it could bring in $650,000 a year to put towards paying athletes. The intrigue: Concerts at the Siegel Center aren't new. Since it opened in 1999, the Stu has hosted Drake, Sheryl Crow, Ludacris, Trey Songz, Dave Matthews and many, many more. President Obama and Hillary Clinton, then-presidential candidates, spoke there, too. It seems that the basketball arena hasn't hosted any big public non-sporting events in the past few years beyond high school graduations. What's different now is that Richmond has been without a large, indoor concert venue since 2019, when the Richmond Coliseum, which could hold around 13,000 people, closed. By the numbers: At roughly 200,000 square feet, the Siegel Center can seat just over 7,600 people, or around 5,500 for concerts if they block one end, per the RTD. Altria, comparatively, can only hold around 3,500. Dominion Energy Center can do 1,800. The National has a capacity of 1,500, and The Broadberry 500. Yes, but: Richmond's outdoor venues can still hold a lot more concert-goers than the Siegel Center will be able to. Brown's Island has room for 16,000. The new amphitheater will be able to do 7,500, and Virginia Credit Union LIVE! at Richmond Raceway can hold 6,000.
