Soccer-Top English women's clubs to allow alcohol in trial

The burgeoning women's game in England has proved a far more family-friendly experience than men's football, where foul language is common and violence often flared in past decades, leading to a 1985 ban on alcohol in view of the pitch. For the upcoming season, fans at the stadiums of top-tier women's clubs Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, London City Lionesses, Manchester City and Manchester United can consume alcohol, the WSL said on Thursday. The women's game is not covered by the 1985 legislation. The trial began last year at 19 fixtures of four second-tier WSL2 clubs involving 51,000 supporters. Two thirds of fans were in favour, with 84% rating their safety between nine and 10 out of 10, the WSL said. "Players and match officials noted no change to fan behaviour, while average expenditure by fans at stadiums, with regards to food and drink, increased across the fixtures, alongside a growth in attendances," it said. As well as underlining the cleaner atmosphere at women's games, the decision is a nod to the success of in-seat drinking at the 2025 Women's European Championship. Soccer-Premier League clubs agree to extend price cap on away tickets

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - Aston Villa v Manchester City - Villa Park, Birmingham, Britain - December 21, 2024 General view of fans buying tickets outside the stadium before the match REUTERS/Hannah Mckay/File Photo (Reuters) - Premier League clubs unanimously agreed on Tuesday to extend the current 30 pounds ($40.56) cap on away ticket prices for a 10th season, the league said in a statement. Since the price cap was introduced in 2016, away game attendance has risen from 82% to 91%. The cumulative away attendance for the 380 matches during the 2024-25 season was 953,420. "The Premier League and clubs recognise the additional costs associated with fans following their team during the season, and the incredible atmospheres they create at matches," the league said in a statement. This comes after fans of several Premier League clubs united under the Football Supporters' Association campaign "Stop Exploiting Loyalty", prompting a ticket price freeze next season from clubs like Liverpool, Brentford, and Manchester City. The new season of England's top flight will begin on August 15 and conclude on May 24, 2026. ($1 = 0.7396 pounds) (Reporting by Shifa Jahan in Bengaluru; Editing by Christian Radnedge)

Soccer-Transgender women not allowed to play women's game in England, FA says

Soccer Football - Women's FA Cup - Quarter Final - Arsenal v Liverpool - Meadow Park, Borehamwood, Britain - March 9, 2025 General view of the match ball with the Women's FA Cup logo during the match Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers (Reuters) -Transgender women will no longer be allowed to compete in women's soccer in England after a policy change prompted by a UK Supreme Court ruling on the matter, the FA said on Thursday. Britain's highest court ruled on April 16 that only biological and not trans women meet the definition of a woman under equality laws, a landmark decision greeted with concern by trans supporters but welcomed by the government as bringing clarity. The FA's policy had allowed transgender women to participate in the women's game but this will change from June 1. "The Supreme Court's ruling on the 16th April means that we will be changing our policy," the soccer governing body said in a statement. "Transgender women will no longer be able to play in women's football in England, and this policy will be implemented from 1 June 2025." The FA said the policy allowing transgender women to play was rooted in making the sport accessible to as many people as possible, "supported by expert legal advice" and aligned with international rules set by UEFA and FIFA. "We understand that this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify, and we are contacting the registered transgender women currently playing to explain the changes and how they can continue to stay involved in the game," it added. Soccer-Italy's Serie A matches postponed after death of Pope Francis

(Reuters) -Italy's top-flight soccer league Serie A has postponed all of Monday's fixtures following the death of Pope Francis. Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church and a lifelong soccer fan has died, the Vatican said in a video statement on Monday. He was 88, and had survived a serious bout of double pneumonia. "Following the passing of His Holiness, Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A can confirm that today's league games in Serie A and Primavera 1 have been postponed," the league said in a statement. "The date of the rearranged fixtures will be announced in due course." (Reporting by Shifa Jahan in Bengaluru; Editing by Toby Chopra)
