Farsi-Language Report Says Iran Is Creating Proxy Groups In Balochistan: 'This Recruitment Is Mainly Carried Out With Promises Of Paying Significant Salaries Of 20-30 Million Tomans Per Month, Arming
According to a Farsi-language media report, the Iranian regime is creating local proxy forces in Balochistan to suppress opposition and divide the Baloch community.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran is seeking, by imitating its regional policies in the Middle East, to implement a dangerous and organized project to create local proxy forces in Balochistan. The main goal of this project is domestic suppression and creating divisions within the Baloch community," noted a report published by Shiwar News, a media outlet known for publishing reports about developments in Balochistan.
The region of Balochistan is divided between Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Baloch freedom fighters and jihadi groups are fighting against Iranian and Pakistani security forces in the region.
Following are excerpts from the report:
"Dangerous Scenario Of The Islamic Republic In Balochistan: Creation Of Local Mercenary Forces By The IRGC
"The Islamic Republic of Iran is seeking, by imitating its regional policies in the Middle East, to implement a dangerous and organized project to create local proxy forces in Balochistan. The main goal of this project is domestic suppression and creating divisions within the Baloch community.
"Field reports show that the security institutions of the Islamic Republic, by exploiting extreme poverty, widespread unemployment, and the lack of job opportunities in Balochistan, have recruited Baloch youths. This recruitment is mainly carried out with promises of paying significant salaries of 20 to 30 million Tomans per month [approximately $217 to $326], arming them, and allocating local bases. These offers are often made to Baloch youths and even women in deprived areas, villages, and remote regions.
"In the past, the Islamic Republic used non-local forces to exert pressure and demolish the residential homes of Baloch citizens. However, now, by employing local forces, it has turned them into tools of its repression. Using Baloch people to destroy the homes of their own fellow-speakers and compatriots has not only facilitated the implementation of repressive policies but has also fueled intra-ethnic division and made the execution of anti-Baloch policies easier for the regime.
"Another worrying dimension of this policy is the intensified pressure on Baloch fuel carriers. The government deliberately, through the suppression of fuel carriers – which for many families is the only means of livelihood – seeks to force this deprived group into cooperating with the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and security institutions.
"In addition, there are reports indicating that security forces inside prisons have promised Baloch prisoners sentence reductions in exchange for cooperation in the repression and assassination of political opponents of the Islamic Republic. Such an action, in addition to being a blatant violation of legal principles, has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation and has led to social instability in the region.
"This policy has a clear objective: greater control over Balochistan through intra-ethnic confrontation and setting the Baloch people against one another. Arming unqualified individuals, some of them with criminal records, by the security institutions is not only a sign of the moral decline of this policy but has also deliberately increased insecurity and instability in the region. This plan constitutes a serious threat to the security, social unity, and future of the people of Balochistan and requires the urgent attention of human rights institutions and the international community."
