HBCU swim program adds record breaking talent to roster

Amira Washington, a standout sprinter from New Jersey, has committed to joining the Howard University Bison swimming program for the 2026–27 season. Her decision strengthens the only HBCU with a Division I swim team and adds to the program's growing national profile. Washington is currently a senior at Red Bank Regional High School. She also trains with the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County. Her primary events include the 50 and 100 freestyle, butterfly, and backstroke. These are key sprint disciplines that align well with Howard's competitive strengths. At the 2025 YMCA Short Course Nationals, she set a personal best in the 100-yard freestyle. In 2024, she competed at the YMCA Long Course Nationals, recording times of 28.20 in the 50-meter free, 1:01.41 in the 100 free, and 28.77 in the 50 fly. She reached the A-finals in both the 50 fly and 50 back. Her high school performances have also stood out. In January 2025, she won the 100 back and placed second in the 100 fly at the Shore Conference Tournament. Both races shattered her own personal best and reset school records that already had her name on them. This consistency across high-level meets makes her one of the top HBCU swim commits in her class. "I am beyond blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Howard University! I would like to thank God along with all my family, friends, and coaches for supporting me through this journey and making my dream a reality. I'd also like to thank Coach Nic for giving me this incredible opportunity. GO BISON!!!" Washington joins a Howard program that is experiencing upward trends. At the 2025 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, the Bison women finished just 43 points behind the champions. With Washington's best short-course times-26.51 in the 50 fly, 56.59 in the 100 fly, 24.19 in the 50 free, and 53.00 in the 100 free-she could have qualified for multiple A- and B-finals. This commitment reflects a broader trend in collegiate athletics. More elite Black athletes of all sports are choosing HBCUs as spaces where they can thrive both athletically and culturally, experiencing the unique campus culture that these institutions offer. Coach Nic Askew continues to build a strong recruiting pipeline at Howard, and Washington's addition is another step in that direction. Her presence will not only enhance the visibility of HBCU swimming in the pool but also increase its visibility nationwide. As Howard aims for a conference title, Washington looks ready to make waves and represent with purpose. St. Rose basketball superstar Jayden Hodge transferring to Montverde Academy

St. Rose basketball superstar Jayden Hodge, who has helped the Purple Roses win the 2024 NJSIAA Non-Public B championship, as well as back-to-back Shore Conference Tournament titles, is heading to Florida for his senior season. Hodge announced on social media Friday that he will transfer to Montverde Academy, a national power that, with Cooper Flagg leading the way, beat St. Rose at the Metro Classic in 2024. Flagg, after a season at Duke, is expected to be the No. 1 pick in this year's NBA Draft. Advertisement The 6-6 Hodge came from his native Belgium as a freshman, along with his older brother Matt, now at Villanova, and completely changed the direction of the Purple Roses program. The connection was St. Rose head coach Brian Lynch, the former star at CBA and Villanova who played with and coached for Odell Hodge, Jayden's father, in Belgium. St. Rose's Jayden Hodge drives to the basket against Roselle Catholic in the NJSIAA Non-Public B boys basketball championship in Piscataway, N.J. on March 14, 2025. He averaged 19.6 points last season, as St. Rose reached the Non-Public B final before falling to Roselle Catholic. Montverde won eight national championships under coach Kevin Boyle, a New Jersey native, but will be replaced next season by Mike Turner, who takes over after 26 seasons at Gonzaga in Washington, D.C. Advertisement Hodge has a host of scholarship offers, including from Rutgers, Seton Hall and Monmouth, along with schools including Villanova, Maryland, Ohio State and Penn State. Shore Conference Boys Basketball Tourney: CBA tops Rumson, reaches first final in 9 years

The program that spent three decades as the dominant player on the Shore Conference boys basketball stage is a win away from rising to the top once again. Christian Brothers Academy, which won 16 Shore Conference Tournament championships between 1984 and 2010, looks to end a 15-year drought in Friday's final. The Colts punched their ticket to their first appearance in the title game in nine years with a 46-34 victory over Rumson-Fair Haven Wednesday at RWJ Barnabas Health Arena. In winning their 14th straight, the Colts got 10 points from junior guard Charlie Marcoullier, while junior Gavin Marlin added nine points. CBA (19-3) advances to its first SCT final since losing to Mater Dei Prep in 2016, and will face the winner of the semifinal between No. 1 Manasquan and No. 4 St. Rose at OceanFirst Bank Center in West Long Branch at 8 p.m. The girls final is at 6 p.m. Rumson (17-7) got 12 points from junior Luke Cruz. As the second half got underway, the Bulldogs' defensive pressure began to pay big dividends in the third quarter, pulling to within 20-18. But CBA rallied, with Kevin Pikiell scoring on a drive and Justin Fuerbacher sinking a tough baseline fadeaway. Then Fuerbacher scored on a dunk in transition after the Colts beat the press, before a Gavin Marlin 3-pointer with two seconds left gave CBA a 29-19 lead after three quarters. Rumson refused to go quietly, getting a 3-point play from David Carr to trim the deficit to 31-24. David Buley hit a pair of free throws for CBA as the Colts took the air out of the ball, making it a nine-point lead. After a pair of Cruz free throws made it a five-point game, a pair of free throws by Marcoullier and a score inside by Conor Andree with less than two minutes left all but sealed the win. The opening half was a tough one shooting-wise for both teams, with CBA building a 17-12 halftime lead on the strength of a pair of Marcoullier 3-points, while a score inside by David Buley gave them a seven-point lead with two minutes left in the second quarter. This is a breaking news story, so check back shortly for more on CBA's win over Rumson-Fair Haven.
