Marc Maron Says Jon Stewart Doesn't Like Him: ‘There's No Love Here'

Ever-outspoken standup, actor, talk show staple, and 'WTF with Marc Maron' host Marc Maron talked about his 'nemesis' Jon Stewart on the NPR series 'Wild Card with Rachel Martin.' Way back in the '90s, Maron was one of Stewart's successors as host of Comedy Central's 'Short Attention Span Theater,' which was canceled shortly after he took over. Maron, of course, went on to bigger and better things, as did Stewart, but Maron said that he needed a rivalry to keep going. 'I always have a nemesis… like most of that is fueled by resentment, insecurity, jealousy, or whatever,' he explained. 'It's habit and it's the never ending sort of, you know, struggle against acting out of insecurity… or resentment, self-acceptance.' 'I always used to think it was just 'cause he committed to a haircut and… a way of presenting. But like, he was just everywhere,' Maron said. 'And he was a standup but… he was everywhere… He was the king of the thing… politics, satire, whatever.' Maron said that he felt a lot of jealousy about Stewart's success, and that the two even had confrontations about it and 'are not friends.' He said that Stewart 'doesn't particularly like' him. But Maron seems to put the onus of the tension on himself. 'It was resentment,' he explained. 'It was me being kind of… small minded.' Maron reached out to Stewart and attempted to mend the fences when he recorded an episode of his eponymous podcast with comedian Gallagher as a guest in 2011. 'I reached out to him, and I remember… he called me back. I was in a hotel room in Portland,' Maron recalled. 'And he goes, 'Hey, you know, it's, it's Jon Stewart.' I'm like, 'Hey man, how you doing?'' Maron then proceeded to explain the podcast he was doing and invited him to participate. Stewart replied, 'I'm not doing that.' 'He said, 'Look, you know, it's like whatever you're doing… there's no love here.' And then he said… 'I'm sure what you're doing is very creative, but… I'm just — there's no love here.' And I'm like, 'Got it, dude.' And uh yeah… so, I guess it was pretty creative,' Maron said. Maron currently is shopping a documentary a highly personal documentary feature, 'Are We Good?' The film premiered at SXSW in March and played Tribeca in June. Stewart, meanwhile, is still leading Comedy Central's 'The Daily Show.' On July 17, he addressed the uncertain future of the series, just hours before the announcement of the cancellation of 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,' which airs on Paramount sister network CBS — and currently the company is attempting a merger with Skydance. 'Unfortunately, we haven't heard anything from them,' he said on his podcast 'The Weekly Show With Jon Stewart.' 'They haven't called me and said, 'Don't get too comfortable in that office, Stewart.' But let me tell you something, I've been kicked out of shittier establishments than that. We'll land on our feet. I honestly don't know.'
