Street Machine Weekend hits top gear with 100-foot dash in Lethbridge

Engines roared and tires smoked at the Lethbridge Exhibition Grounds as the annual 100-foot dash took centre stage during Street Machine Weekend. Unlike traditional quarter-mile races, the 100-foot dash offers a unique, high-intensity format — short, loud and built for crowd excitement. More than 100 cars competed, ranging from modest four-cylinders to nitrous-fueled beasts, all launched under careful safety measures. 'This is a safe venue to educate racers and promote responsible motorsport.' While the racing draws the crowds, the real heart of the event is the camaraderie. 'The people are 80 per cent of the event,' said racer Rick Redelback. 'If I need a tire, someone hands me a tire. That's the kind of support you see here.' As families, fans, and racers gear up for Sunday's Show and Shine, Saturday's 100-foot dash proved that the event is more than just horsepower. It's about connection, culture, and community.

Popular Show and Shine sound-off ups the volume at Winter Fair

Popular Show and Shine sound-off ups the volume at Winter Fair Showtime Magazine South Africa hosted the popular Show & Shine Winter Fair 2025 Autofest at the KwaDukuza municipal grounds last weekend. Thousands of car enthusiasts crowded onto the top field to listen to the loudest cars in the province battle it out in Saturday's Winter Fair Sound Off. The motoring show was in aid of raising much-needed funds for the KwaDukuza Child Welfare charity, who host the annual Winter Fair. Sound testing was handled by Street Customs from Umkomaas to eliminate any claims of favouritism or cheating by local judges, a concern raised in past events. Such was the competition, the sound-off ran until 1.30am. Team A Tec and Ashbarn Trucking brought the noise, beating out more than 100 contestants to claim the coveted 'Showstopper' awards. The red stock-driving Mini of Rafiq Adam (Team A Tec) registered a massive 170.8 decibels (dB) in the 'Advanced' class category. Rafiq, from Stanger, used two 12K Sound Digital amplifiers and two 15-inch FOR-X woofers to blow away the competition. The 'Ultimate Car Showstopper' was a green Mini belonging to Ashbarn Trucking, which posted 171 dB in the 'Ultimate' category. Ashbarn used four 15-inch Vibe woofers and a Terminator 20K amplifier to take home the trophy. On Sunday, Showtime Magazine founder Gerrie Welgemoed judged the 'Show and Shine Showstopper' competition. Welgemoed, who travelled from Johannesburg to do the judging, said more than 150 cars arrived for the competition but only 70 made the entry cut-off time. Stanger's Denver Simathari successfully defended his 2024 title with his custom-designed 1995 red Ford Bantam. 'This bakkie had a lot of work done,' said Welgemoed. 'It was super clean – you could eat off the engine bay.' Yatish Narothum took home both the Glow in the Dark and Best Home Build Boot Setup awards with his fluorescent VW Golf 1 he built with his dad Yathin. 'My son and I have been working on this car for five years, but we still have a lot of work to do,' said Yathin.
