Why Gloria Hunniford was forced to quit Celebrity Bake Off

TV presenter Gloria Hunniford has opened up about her withdrawal from The Great Celebrity Bake Off, saying she had to leave after a 'terrible' fall that required hospitalisation. The incident occurred backstage before the "Showstopper" round, filmed last summer. Hunniford said missing the final round was a 'real shame', having prepared a family-inspired cake recipe. Despite the incident, judge Paul Hollywood offered positive feedback on Hunniford's unfinished creation, saying she had executed the concept 'really well'. Hunniford confirmed her recovery on Instagram, emphasising her support for Stand Up to Cancer, the charity for which this season of Celebrity Bake Off is raising funds.

Celebrity Bake Off star creates 'repulsive' Alien-inspired pie

The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer opened its tent doors to Self Esteem, Tommy Tiernan, Meera Syal and Adam Buxton this weekend. Airing on Sunday, 6 April, the latest instalment of Channel 4's charitable series tasked the foursome with baking a batch of crumpets, a Lambeth cake, and a portrait (or 'pie-trait') of their favourite famous person. For his Showstopper ode to filmmaker Ridley Scott, Buxton recreated a classic scene from the 1979 horror Alien, which features a xenomorph hatching out of the chest of John Hurt's character Kane. The comedian, who hosts The Adam Buxton Podcast and guests on panel shows like Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Have I Got News For You, and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, cobbled together a cherry pie monstrosity, topped with an alien in banana form that would appear to be bursting out of its centre. "I'm just worried that the banana might bake before the pastry is baked," judge Caroline Waldegrave told him in the early stages of the Showstopper round. "That's the big worry, I did test it," replied Buxton, before confirming his "third attempt" at home was OK. What he ended up with was a pie straight out of Bake Off viewers' nightmares. "Adam's alien creation is probably the most repulsive and disgusting creation I've seen on #GBBO for some time," tweeted one of them. "Paul & Caroline tasting alien pie. They sure do earn their wages on that show!" read another reaction on social media. Meanwhile, writer/comedian/actress Syal took home the coveted Star Baker apron this week. "I can't put it into words, this apron is never gonna leave me. I'm so thrilled," she smiled in the aftermath. Paul Hollywood went on to tell the cameras: "I think Meera did unbelievably well with her flavours, certainly on the Signature and Showstopper, they were absolutely delicious!" The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer airs Sundays on Channel 4.
