Celebrity Bake Off star creates 'repulsive' Alien-inspired pie

The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer opened its tent doors to Self Esteem, Tommy Tiernan, Meera Syal and Adam Buxton this weekend.
Airing on Sunday, 6 April, the latest instalment of Channel 4's charitable series tasked the foursome with baking a batch of crumpets, a Lambeth cake, and a portrait (or 'pie-trait') of their favourite famous person.
For his Showstopper ode to filmmaker Ridley Scott, Buxton recreated a classic scene from the 1979 horror Alien, which features a xenomorph hatching out of the chest of John Hurt's character Kane.
The comedian, who hosts The Adam Buxton Podcast and guests on panel shows like Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Have I Got News For You, and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, cobbled together a cherry pie monstrosity, topped with an alien in banana form that would appear to be bursting out of its centre.
"I'm just worried that the banana might bake before the pastry is baked," judge Caroline Waldegrave told him in the early stages of the Showstopper round.
"That's the big worry, I did test it," replied Buxton, before confirming his "third attempt" at home was OK.

Low and behold, the prematurely baked banana toppled over and wouldn't stay in place, which completely ruined Buxton's blood-caked vision.
What he ended up with was a pie straight out of Bake Off viewers' nightmares.
"Adam's alien creation is probably the most repulsive and disgusting creation I've seen on #GBBO for some time," tweeted one of them.
"Paul & Caroline tasting alien pie. They sure do earn their wages on that show!" read another reaction on social media.
Meanwhile, writer/comedian/actress Syal took home the coveted Star Baker apron this week.
"I can't put it into words, this apron is never gonna leave me. I'm so thrilled," she smiled in the aftermath.
Paul Hollywood went on to tell the cameras: "I think Meera did unbelievably well with her flavours, certainly on the Signature and Showstopper, they were absolutely delicious!"
The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer airs Sundays on Channel 4.

Gogglebox's Malone family announces heartbreaking death of beloved dog

The Malone family, Gogglebox's fan favourites, have announced a heartbreaking death. Father Tom Sr, mother Julie, and youngest son Shaun made their first appearence on the Channel 4 show back in 2014 during its fourth season. Their other son, Tom Jr quit in 2021 while the rest of his family continued without him. The Manchester based family and their gang of Rottweiler dogs quickly won over fans with their humorous observations on the day's current TV shows. However, the family has recently shared some sad news with Shaun announcing on Instagram that their beloved pooch Bob has passed away. Accompanied by touching clips and pictures of the dog, he wrote: 'Today is the day we had to say goodbye to big Bob, an absolutely great dog like a big cuddly bear.' In the meantime, Julie also paid her tribute by sharing several pictures of Bob, writing: 'We are heartbroken, RIP our beautiful Big Bob xx.' Fan response has been huge, with many sending their love and support. 'The bigger the dog, the bigger the hole in your heart that they leave,' said one person. 'He was such a legend! So sorry for the whole family loss,' added a second fan. 'So sorry to hear this he will be reunited with the big Dave,' wrote a third. Meanwhile, a fourth remarked: 'Run free over the rainbow bridge Bob.' This follows the passing of their family dog Dave back in 2023. At that time sharing the news on their Twitter/X account they wrote: 'There are no words to describe the pain we are feeling or how much we loved you, Dave. 'You helped everyone see the true nature of Rotties. We were blessed to have you for 12 and a half years xx.' They had already gone through the loss of another Rottweiler, Lucy in 2022 and another Rottweiler, Izzey, in 2021. As big Rottweiler lovers, three years ago they adopted Tilly, the newest addition to their family. The family has a third son, named Lee, and a daughter, Vanessa, both of whom have never appeared on Gogglebox.

Jamie Oliver says he 'might have ended up in jail' due to dyslexia

TV chef Jamie Oliver has said that "cooking saved him" and if hadn't found a love of the kitchen, he "might have ended up in jail" because of his dyslexia. Oliver, 50, was talking at the preview of his new documentary, Jamie's Dyslexia Revolution, on Thursday evening. The dad of five, who struggles with reading and writing, says his learning difference meant he felt "thick, stupid, worthless and dumb" at school. However, he found something he was good at and built his self-esteem in the kitchen of the pub he grew up in. Saying he was one of the "lucky ones", Oliver, who uses a dictaphone to write his cook books, added that "the stats are really, really clear" and without a career path "statistically, I might have ended up in jail". According to the British Dyslexia Association, dyslexia affects one in 10 people. However, a government report into the criminal justice system in 2021 suggested that up to half of the prison population show signs of the learning difficulty. And Oliver said there is a "pathway" behind this overrepresentation among the prison population. Around 25% of children in a class have special educational needs (SEN) including dyslexia, according to the Department for Education, and these students are 3.5 times more likely to be excluded from school. Data also shows that teenagers excluded from school are twice as likely to commit serious violence, which could lead to a jail term. The documentary, which airs on Channel 4 on Monday 9 June, aims to tackle the root cause of the issue by campaigning for better support for dyslexic children. "An education system that only works for some kids and not everyone, is broken,' Oliver says in the show. 'Dyslexia is bigger than letters jumping around and a few kids struggling to read. It's about getting tens of thousands of kids a year to thrive, and not just survive, in school." "We are missing out on a lot of extraordinary young people becoming extraordinary contributors to this country," he added. "I genuinely think school is on the front line of hope, optimism and better, cooler, more productive Britain.' In the programme, which features children with dyslexia, school teachers and adults with the condition, Jamie has two key asks for the government. Firstly, he is campaigning for education secretary Bridget Phillipson to introduce early screening for dyslexia in schools. "How can we help kids if we don't know they need support?" the documentary questions. The second aim is to provide more support and training for teachers to help neurodiverse children in the classroom. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Channel 4 (@channel4) Last weekend Oliver, who shares children Poppy, 23, Daisy, 22, Petal, 16, Buddy, 14, and River, eight, with wife Jools, told The Sunday Times that some of his kids are also neurodiverse. Opening up on his "bonkers' family, he said there had been diagnoses of ADHD, dyslexia and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) within the past year. According to the NHS, dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that can cause issues with reading, writing and spelling. It does not affect intelligence. It may cause you to: read and write slowly confuse the order of letters in words be confused by letters that look similar, such as 'b' and 'd' have trouble spelling find it hard to carry out a sequence of directions struggle with planning and organisation If you think your child may have dyslexia, speak to their school who may be able to offer support.
