Free summer reading program begins with art and nature events
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — 'Color Our World,' Shreve Memorial Library's Summer Reading Program, starts on Monday, June 2, and features family-friendly events at several locations. Wonder Oasis Waterpark opens early with exclusive deals, updated rides and more Free and open to the public, 'Color Our World' encourages patrons to embrace the beauty of art in all forms. The Broadmoor Branch, located at 1212 Captain Shreve Drive, hosts the Summer Reading Shindig on Wednesday, May 28, featuring games and providing an opportunity for registration. Participants should be ready to have fun and be active from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Another opportunity to register is at the Summer Reading Sign-Up Mess Fest, which takes place at the David Raines Branch, located at 2855 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Attendees will be able to create and play in a hands-on sensory experience on May 28, from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Summer Reading Program officially kicks off on Monday, June 2. All ages are welcome to participate in interactive programs highlighting art, nature, creativity, and expression across Shreve Memorial Library locations. Bossier City's first-ever pocket park 'Children will explore the colorful world of nature with Margaret Clauder as Mother Goose, Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Nature Park, and Steve's Snaketuary, while adults will enjoy nature's colorful bounty with the Urban Gardening Initiative and Cenerica Smith, Chef Jacquelyn Caskey, and Chef Sheila Saunders.' Karen LaBeau, Whitney Tates, Marci Hicks, The Clayground, and Christena Francis will lead paints and crafts for teens and adults. DML Make & Go will give direction on how to complete STEAM-based projects. Ashley Mace Havird, Amber Jurgensen, and M.L. Tarpley will lead writing and literature workshops. All programs and performances are free and open to the public with registration. Children 10 and under are encouraged to read 10 books over the summer, teens 11 to 17 are asked to read five, and adults are tasked with reading three. Celebrate AAPI food, dance, martial arts and more at Shreveport libraries
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — May is Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. Shreve Memorial Library invites patrons to experience culture through interactive workshops and food demonstrations across various branches. Shreve Memorial Library (SML) says all programs are free and open to the public. AAPI events include learning Tai Chi, drawing asian flowers, painting Mt Fuji, a Tahitian dance class, origami techniques, making Chinese sky lanterns, and much more. Throughout the month, patrons can stop by the Blanchard Branch at 344 Alexander Street in Blanchard, Monday through Friday between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to create Chinese sky lanterns, says SML. On Friday, May 16, the West Shreveport Branch will host a Tahitian dance workshop for children at 4:45 p.m. at 4380 Pines Road. In Belcher, children will be able to learn to Hula at the Belcher-Wyche Branch, located at 409 Charles Street, on Tuesday, May 20 at 4:30 p.m. On Monday, May 19, the Hamilton/South Caddo Branch, located at 2111 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, will host a beginner's Tai Chi class. Led by Glenn Guerin of Lee's Kung Fu and Tai Chi Center. Shark Tank AAPI contestants, provides sustainable solution to plastic waste in health care SML details that the Tai Chi Class introduces adults to a martial art style that uses gentle, flowing movements, deep breathing, and meditation to promote physical and mental well-being.' The class will begin at 4:30 p.m., and registration is required. Interested patrons can sign up at the branch or call (318) 687-6824 to register. Each Thursday in May at 4:00 p.m., the Belcher-Wyche Branch hosts AAPI story time featuring books written by and about AAPI authors and culture. On Tuesday, May 20, at 2:00 p.m., patrons at the Mooringsport Branch, located at 603 Latimer Street, will make various crafts, including leis, tiki suncatchers, and hibiscus hair clips. On Wednesday, May 21, the Means Branch, located at 7016 E. Magnolia Lane in Ida, will host a drawing workshop at 4:00 p.m., during which patrons will complete drawings of Asian flowers. On Thursday, May 22, at 10:00 a.m. at 4844 N. Market Street, at the North Shreveport Branch, adults will use acrylic paint to capture the beauty and magnificence of Mt. Fuji. On Tuesday, May 27, those interested in learning the Japanese art of origami are encouraged to visit the Belcher-Wyche Branch at 4:30 p.m. for an interactive workshop. In this workshop, patrons will use origami techniques to make a kite. On Wednesday, May 28, teens interested in creating 'zines,' small-scale publications with drawings, collage, and writings, at 5 p.m. Support local Asian restaurants for AAPI month SML will host food demonstrations, including special 'coffee time,' boba tea, and bake club with savory and sweet treats. Special Coffee Time at Belcher-Wyche Branch on May 16 at 10 a.m. Polynesian Chicken, a sweet, savory island favourite, is available at the West Shreveport Branch on May 22 at 4 p.m. Bubble/boba tea demonstration at the North Caddo Branch on Wednesday, May 28, at 3 p.m. There are movies and storytelling events across several SML branches. Shreve Memorial Library to host financial literacy seminars throughout May
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Shreve Memorial Library's Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch, in partnership with Gibsland Bank and Trust, will present GBT Cares Financial Literacy Seminars throughout May. The seminars will focus on understanding credit, ways to save, budgeting, and preventing identity theft. 'GBT has a long-standing commitment to helping customers and communities through volunteer service and financial involvement,' a press release stated. 'Through the GBT Cares Program, GBT helps individuals manage their money, personal finances, and investments by providing education on topics needed to realize long-term personal and financial goals.' Signs of Stroke: what to know for Stroke Awareness Month The GBT Cares Program focuses on five key areas: Earn, Budget, Debt Management, Save & Invest, and Protect. 'Representatives from GBT will educate Shreve Memorial Library patrons on key aspects of financial literacy and ways to improve financial well-being,' the release stated. 'Each seminar will cover a different topic, including need-to-know information about understanding credit, how to save more by paying yourself first, and steps needed to plan a budget in 2025. In addition, the GBT Cares Seminars will cover methods and tips to help prevent identity theft and fraud.' Shreve Memorial Library Branch to close for fungal/mold remediation
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – Shreve Memorial Library's Cedar Grove-Line Avenue Branch will close to the public on Friday, April 25, for fungal/mold remediation. According to a press release, the branch will remain closed until remediation and renovation work is completed. SML estimates the branch to be closed for one month. Relieve stress during Stress Awareness Month at Shreve Memorial Library 'The safety and well-being of our patrons and our library staff are of utmost concern,' said Deonci Sutton, Associate Director for Library Services. Children's Book Festival returns to Shreve Memorial Library
SHREVEPORT, LA (KTAL/KMSS) – The Shreve Memorial Library Children's Book Festival returns Saturday, May 3, at LSU Shreveport. The annual event, presented in memory of John Tuggle, is a family-friendly, daylong literary celebration featuring children's book authors and illustrators, entertainment, costumed characters, games, and activities for children of all ages. The festival is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the grounds of Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS). Admission to the festival is free and open to the public. Dork Diaries author and illustrator, Rachel Renée Russell and Nikki Russell, will headline the festival, along with children's book authors and illustrators Greg Foley, Alicia Salazar, and Charlotte Gunnufson. BPCC to use scenic projection to immerse audiences for upcoming spring production According to a release, patrons of Shreve Memorial Library can get to know the works of these featured authors at special story time programs, taking place now through May 2nd at Shreve Memorial Library branches. During the festival, attendees will be able to meet and interact with these authors throughout the day in author tents, purchase copies of their works and have them autographed, and see each author bring their works to life during special presentations. Additionally, children will have a chance to meet some of their favorite storybook characters, such as Elephant and Piggie, Pete the Cat, Bad Kitty, Zoom Squirrel, Ladybug Girl, Curious George, Little Critter, Spot the Dog, Madeline, Winnie the Pooh, and more, at the festival. Children will be able to have their pictures taken with these and other popular characters. Community organizations and local businesses will join Shreve Memorial Library to present Literacy Lane, an interactive area of the festival that celebrates childhood literacy. Literacy Lane is a special area of the Children's Book Festival where community partners come together to promote a love of reading and lifelong learning in fun, interactive ways. At Literacy Lane, children can play games to improve literacy skills while learning about the valuable services offered by these organizations. All activities taking place in Literacy Lane are free of charge. LSUS Auxiliary Services will provide concessions for the festival. Attendees can purchase items such as hamburgers, chicken wraps, pizza and hot dogs from the Port Grille, located inside of the LSUS University Center.
