Sudbury police raid downtown shop selling magic mushrooms
Police in Greater Sudbury raided a store in downtown Sudbury that was selling psilocybin, better known as magic mushrooms.
Two people have been arrested and drugs and cash seized after Greater Sudbury Police raided a store downtown that was selling psilocybin, better known as magic mushrooms.
In a news release Thursday, police said the store was linked to an illegal operation that opened in November 2024.

'Psilocybin is a controlled drug under Schedule III of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and selling psilocybin carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison,' the release said.
When the store – known as Shroomyz -- opened in November on Elm Street, police said they visited with the employees, who 'voluntarily shutdown the store and enforcement was not pursued.'
However, in April of this year, the store moved across the street and was preparing to reopen.
From education to enforcement
Police then 'transitioned the approach from education to enforcement and a drug investigation was initiated.'
Detectives raided the store July 2 and two employees who were selling psilocybin products were arrested.
Police seized more than 300 packages of psilocybin products including dry psilocybin, psilocybin edibles and psilocybin capsules worth $16,500.
'Also seized was $18,000 in cash from the sale of psilocybin,' police said.
Charges for the two employees include several counts of drug trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime over $5,000.
Both suspects have since been released with a future court date to answer to the charges.
'We would like to remind our community that selling and possessing psilocybin is still illegal and officers will continue with enforcement,' police said.
