No sabotage, cyberattack suspected in autogate glitch
The huge crowd at the BSI complex in Johor Bahru where the autogates for foreigners failed to function. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : There are no signs of sabotage or cyberattack in the disruption of the automatic gate system for foreign visitors. Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency director-general Shuhaily Zain said the incident was believed to have stemmed from a disruption in data integration between the Malaysian Immigration System (MyIMMs) and the security database of an international enforcement agency. This slowed down the cross-checking process, he was quoted as saying by Bernama at a press conference at KLIA Terminal 1 today. 'So far, there is no indication of a cyberattack. 'Let us carry out a thorough investigation to determine the actual cause,' he said. Shuhaily said all automatic gate systems for foreign visitors that were previously affected were now fully operational. He apologised for the inconvenience caused by the disruption of the system and assured the public that steps would be taken to prevent a recurrence. The autogate system disruption was reported to have occurred on Friday and persisted until yesterday evening. Congestion and long queues were observed at several key entry points, including KLIA's Terminals 1 and 2, as well as the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Sultan Abu Bakar customs, immigration and quarantine complexes in Johor Bahru. The agency implemented mitigation measures to ease the flow of visitors, which included activating all manual counters and deploying additional personnel at the checkpoints. Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the incident risked tarnishing the image of the state and nation as the complex at BSI was one of the busiest in the region. He called on federal authorities to prevent a recurrence of the system disruption. The situation at BSI returned to normal at 10pm yesterday. Singaporean Narziah Shakor, 55, said many travellers were left standing in long queues for three to four hours.

Federal CID chief to be transferred to border control agency
Shuhaily Zain will be replaced by M Kumar as CID director at Bukit Aman. PETALING JAYA : Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain will be transferred to the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency on July 1. Shuhaily, who was appointed federal CID chief in August 2023, confirmed the transfer with Berita Harian but declined to comment further. He will reportedly take over as the director-general of the border agency until June 30, 2027 and replaces Hazani Ghazali who retired in February. Johor police chief M Kumar will take over from Shuhaily as Bukit Aman CID director. Kumar's replacement has yet to be announced. In August last year, Malaysiakini reported that Shuhaily and deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay would be involved in a major shake-up of Bukit Aman's leadership. The news portal quoted a source as saying Ayob might be transferred to lead either the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency or the border agency, while Shuhaily was speculated to take over as director-general of the national anti-drugs agency. The then IGP Razarudin Husain rejected the report, which led to a police investigation into Malaysiakini over its article, with three of its journalists summoned to give their statements last year.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Police are finalising their investigation into a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender programme planned by PSM's youth wing after recording statements from two members yesterday. Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the individuals were questioned from 3.10pm to 4.30pm, and that a Huawei mobile phone and a SIM card were seized from one of them. 'A total of 38 questions were posed to them. However, both opted to respond in court,' Berita Harian quoted him as saying. The investigation is being conducted under Section 298A and Section 505(c) of the Penal Code, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain previously said that the number of reports received on the event had risen from 21 to 188. Last week, religious affairs minister Na'im Mokhtar urged PSM to cancel its plans for the workshop, themed 'Pride Care: Queer Stories & Sexual Health Awareness'. He said the organisation of such a programme, even if held behind closed doors, clearly challenged societal norms and the religious values of the majority. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
