Inside IBM's AI playbook: Why productivity, not hype, is driving the conversation
There's no shortage of AI talk in global boardrooms right now. But IBM isn't talking – it's doing. While many firms are still testing pilot programmes and debating frameworks, IBM has gone full scale. And the results are starting to speak for themselves. At Dubai AI Week 2025, amid announcements and prototypes from across the tech spectrum, IBM's message was rooted in something refreshingly clear: real-world execution. 'At IBM, we have long believed in technology's power to not just solve real-world challenges but to fundamentally reshape industries and societies,' explained Shukri Eid, General Manager for Gulf, Levant & Pakistan at IBM. Productivity, at scale IBM's story is not about AI as a future possibility. It's about what happens when you put it at the heart of how a business actually operates. Since January 2023, the company has delivered $3.5 billion in productivity gains and generated $12.7 billion in free cash flow in 2024 alone – outcomes that have little to do with experimentation and everything to do with execution. The internal transformation programme, dubbed Client Zero, involved rolling out AI, hybrid cloud and automation technologies across every corner of the organisation. This included HR, procurement, finance and customer service – not in isolation, but as part of a systemic overhaul. 'IBM is laser-focused on harnessing AI to tackle the world's most complex problems, while carefully managing risks and adhering to robust governance frameworks to create lasting, impactful change,' said Eid. The changes are concrete. An AI assistant now handles 94 per cent of employee HR queries without human intervention. In customer service, 70 per cent of incoming requests are resolved via digital assistants, cutting resolution time and raising satisfaction scores. Internally, IBM staff saved a reported 3.9 million hours in 2024 through automation. A responsible approach IBM's approach to AI also comes with a clear stance on governance and ethics – a priority for regulators and governments across the region. 'We are eager to collaborate with the region's most ambitious innovators to unlock new opportunities and accelerate AI progress, in alignment with Dubai's Universal Blueprint for Artificial Intelligence,' Eid shared. IBM's efforts were formally recognised during Dubai AI Week, when the company received the Dubai AI Seal – the UAE's highest certification for responsible and effective AI deployment. 'Dubai and the UAE are leading the way in setting global standards for trustworthy AI, and as the region continues to advance in digital innovation, we are eager to strengthen our partnerships with local stakeholders to support sustainable and responsible AI development,' Eid noted. From culture to capability Perhaps what's most significant about IBM's transformation is the cultural shift behind it. AI isn't being confined to the IT department. Through initiatives like the watsonx Challenge, the company encouraged more than 178,000 employees to develop AI tools tailored to their day-to-day work – many of which have now been rolled out company-wide. It's a bottom-up movement supported by top-down vision – with strategic oversight from the CEO's office and operational teams working in agile two-week sprints to deploy, test and refine new solutions. And while AI is still evolving, IBM is already looking toward the next phase: agentic AI. These are systems designed not just to support decisions, but to autonomously manage entire workflows from start to finish – potentially transforming how businesses operate at a structural level. The takeaway IBM's experience won't be easy to replicate – but it offers a roadmap for others looking to make AI real inside the enterprise. It's not about innovation theatre. It's about outcomes. As Eid put it: 'Our presence at Dubai AI Week underscored our dedication to advancing AI as a transformative force that drives productivity, delivers measurable ROI, and fosters sustainable growth on a global scale.'

AI reshaping business future in Dubai, region: IBM
DUBAI: IBM has generated over US$3.5 billion in return on investment over the past two years through the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies within the company, according to Shukri Eid, General Manager of IBM Gulf, Levant and Pakistan. Speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) during Dubai AI Week, Eid emphasised that AI has become a strategic priority for organisations in the region, serving as a powerful tool to enhance productivity and maximise returns. He noted that IBM plays a pivotal role in helping businesses identify and implement high-impact use cases across areas such as human resources, supply chain, procurement and application development. Eid predicted that AI's impact would accelerate in the future with the adoption of 'AI assistants' and 'AI agents' capable of understanding context and making independent decisions with minimal human oversight. Regarding the outlook for AI in Dubai and the wider Middle East, Eid said the region is currently witnessing substantial investments in AI, spanning infrastructure, applications, and model development. 'Last year, we observed that many companies moved beyond experimentation and started realising tangible returns from their AI investments,' he noted. He stressed that success in this transition requires robust data platforms and the use of more specialised and efficient AI models to improve accuracy and reduce costs, while also maintaining a critical balance between innovation, security, and reliability. He highlighted the importance of partnerships in accelerating digital transformation. On a study conducted by IBM in collaboration with the Dubai Future Foundation, Eid revealed that preliminary findings show 26 percent of organisations in the region have appointed a Chief AI Officer, with this figure expected to rise to between 50 and 65 percent over the next two years. He added that organisations with this dedicated leadership role are achieving 10 percent higher returns on their AI investments, underlining the value of appointing leadership for AI-driven transformation. He noted that the UAE was among the first countries to establish such roles in both public and private sector institutions. Eid reaffirmed IBM's commitment to supporting the UAE and Dubai in becoming central to global AI development through partnerships with entities such as the Dubai Future Foundation, Mashreq Bank, Dubai Islamic Bank and Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University.

IBM is a strategic partner of Dubai AI Week. Can you provide us with more information on what attendees can expect to see and hear from IBM during the event? Our involvement in Dubai AI Week reflects our broader partnership with the Dubai Future Foundation and the Emirate of Dubai overall, focused on advancing AI for real-world impact. Our objective is to showcase how AI can drive productivity gains, deliver significant return on investment, and help reinvent the way organizations work in the digital age. Over the week, IBM will host expert sessions and speaking engagements covering critical priorities for businesses on their AI journey — from identifying quick-win use cases, to building a strong data foundation with fit-for-purpose models, to ensuring trust and governance throughout the AI lifecycle. We'll further present early findings from the Global Chief AI Officers Study, a joint report we are working on with the Dubai Future Foundation, highlighting how global leaders are approaching AI strategy and implementation. Organizations with a CAIO see a higher ROI on AI spend compared to those without one and as per our interim findings, 26% of organizations have a CAIO and 65% of CAIOs believe most organizations will have a CAIO within the next 2 years. This is a key audience we are working with to advance AI for enterprise and government in line with UAE National AI Strategy. Dubai has made no secret of its aspirations and ambitions to become a global leader when it comes to AI. The Dubai Universal Blueprint for AI has been engineered and designed to accelerate the adoption of AI technologies into every facet of society. IBM, as a global tech leader, has long been a partner of the UAE Government, but can you tell us the role IBM is playing in terms of achieving the goals and objectives of their AI vision? We are proud to support Dubai and the UAE's bold vision to become a global leader in AI. Our collaboration with leading UAE entities is focused on accelerating the adoption of AI in ways that align with national agendas and business priorities. Globally, we're seeing incredible momentum. Our generative AI book of business surpassed $5 billion inception-to-date, with $2 billion of that growth happening just in the last quarter. That's a clear signal that enterprises aren't experimenting with AI anymore—they're implementing it at scale. And that's exactly the kind of transformation we're supporting in the UAE. We recently partnered with e& to co-develop an AI governance framework, one of the region's first, designed to help organizations in the UAE and beyond adopt AI responsibly and at scale. This framework offers practical guidance to embed governance, transparency, and accountability into every stage of the AI lifecycle. At the World Governments Summit 2025, we signed an agreement with the Dubai Future Foundation to support the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the Universal Blueprint for AI. The partnership includes building a sovereign cloud, launching an AI innovation center, and deepening our role in startup mentorship, Tech Talks, and advisory services — all to help position Dubai as a global AI hub. Additionally, we're collaborating with the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) to apply IBM's geospatial foundation model to map and reduce urban heat islands in Abu Dhabi. This work has already led to a reduction of over 3°C in affected areas, offering valuable insights for sustainable urban planning in a region heavily impacted by climate change. Our ongoing collaborations in the UAE reflect IBM's commitment to supporting national AI ambitions and helping shape a future where AI serves society responsibly and equitably. IBM recently announced the next generation of their iconic mainframe in the form of the IBM z17, designed to bring AI to the core of the enterprise to enable new workloads. Can you outline the capabilities of this product in more detail, and the impact you believe it will have across the industry? The IBM z17 isn't just another iteration of our mainframe, it's a response to how enterprise computing is evolving. So, with the z17, we've built AI directly into the hardware and software stack, starting with the Telum II processor. That gives it the ability to run AI models efficiently and securely, right where the data lives. We're seeing over 250 AI support use cases for the z17 that are very real for our clients—fraud detection that happens in milliseconds, smarter customer service with AI-powered chat, even helping radiologists interpret medical images faster. And with the new IBM Spyre Accelerator, it's not just traditional models—we're talking large language models and generative AI running securely, at scale. The z17 continues to lead in security and resiliency. And with tools like watsonx Code Assistant for Z, we're making it easier for developers to build and manage on the platform, whether they've been working on Z for years or are just getting started. In short, this is about giving businesses a way to move fast with AI, without compromising on the things that matter: security, scale, and trust. Finally, when it comes to Gen AI, understandably, there is huge excitement at the potential it has to completely transform industries, but that being said, there are growing calls for more robust frameworks and governance around AI in order to ensure it is being used responsibly. Can you give us an overview from an IBM perspective on your approach to responsible AI? At IBM, we are deeply committed to developing AI that can be trusted to drive progress for both business and society.
